BREAKING: NUPENG, PENGASSAN call off strike after midnight meeting with Kachikwu



Labour unions in Nigeria’s oil sector, the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas (NUPENG) and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), have called off their strike with immediate effect.

The unions had shut offices of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, nationwide following the announcement of its unbundling by minister of state for petroleum, Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on Wednesday March 9, 2016 arraigned Rickey Tarfa, SAN, before Justice A. A. Akintoye of the Lagos State High Court, Igbosere on a 27-count charge bordering on alleged wilful obstruction of authorized officers of EFCC, refusing to declare asset, making false information and offering gratification to a public official.

When the charge was read to him, Tarfa pleaded not guilty.

A Zimbabwean policeman has appeared in court after calling 92-year-old President Robert Mugabe “too old to rule” and accusing his wife of being a prostitute, local media reported Wednesday.

Thompson Joseph Mloyi, 44, did not enter a plea at a magistrate’s court in Harare over remarks he allegedly made at a camp shared by police and army, the privately-owned newspaper NewsDay said.

One Chima John, 37, was on Tuesday paraded at the Oyo State Police Command for allegedly kidnapping his 13-year-old niece.

John, who has been in the custody of the police, confessed before journalists that he abducted his niece, Ijeoma, to get to his uncle whom he described as stingy.

Akwa Ibom to collect tax for consumption of Alcohol, says Commissioner


 The Akwa Ibom Commissioner for Finance, Mr Akan Okon, said consumption of alcohol in hotels and beer parlours in the state would now attract tax.

Okon told journalists in Uyo on Saturday that people who consumed alcoholic drinks would begin to pay a token as tax.

``Some people who lodge in hotels and consume alcohol will henceforth pay taxes to the state government.
