No plan to sell refineries – NNPC

THE Federal Government has said it has no plan to sell any of the refineries, but may encourage joint venture investments in the facilities.

The Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, made this statement on Wednesday shortly after inspecting the Port Harcourt refinery in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Nigeria currently has four refineries in Rivers, Delta and Kaduna states with two of them in Eleme.

Kachikwu explained that rather than sell the nation’s refineries, government would embrace the option of increasing their capacity by making them 100 per cent efficient.

Google Inc unveiled a redesign of its iconic logo on Tuesday, the fifth such modification since the search engine giant started in 1998, the company said in a blog post.

According to an eyewitness, the naked driver, came out of his vehicle and started behaving funny by removing his cloths.

Pope changes Catholic rule on abortion


Pope Francis on Tuesday directed priests across the world to grant forgiveness to women who have had abortions.

The pontiff said the women should be granted absolution during the Jubilee year of Mercy which starts on December, 8.

The gravity of abortion, according to the church, is likened to attacking a bishop or desecrating the Eucharist. Tuesday’s announcement, however, did not change the belief but sought to relieve affected women of the burden for the specific period of the Jubilee year – December 8, 2015, to November 20, 2016.

Billionaire Fernandez dies at 79



Antonio Oladeinde Fernandez, oil magnate, diplomat and Permanent Representative of Central African Republic to the United Nations (UN) is dead.

The billionaire businessman died yesterday in a Brussels, Belgium hospital after a brief illness, a source close to the family said. He was 79.

Details of the death remained hazy last night.

One of Africa’s richest men, the late Fernandez was born in Lagos into the Fernandez family which originated from Brazil.

A desperate migrant was captured attempting to smuggle himself into Spain while hiding behind a car’s engine.
The unidentified man - who is thought to be from Guinea - was discovered by stunned officials at the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.He were discovered after police thought the car’s driver was nervous. 

According to the Telegraph,the car had travelled from Morocco and border officials found the migrant lying in a foetal position behind the car’s engine and radiator.

Mrs Eze who lived at No. 1, Akinyemi Street, off Ijoka road, Sijuwade close in Akure, runs “mini bear parlor joint” close to her residence in Akure, SaharaReporters learned on Monday.

The late widow was killed on Sunday evening by the officers.

After her death, the policemen dumped the remains of the deceased widow, who left behind three little children, at the general hospital’s morgue in Akure.

EFCC arrests Adamawa University VC, others for selling N13m SUV as scrap



The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Monday arrested top officials of the Adamawa State University for selling a N13 million government-owned Toyota Land Cruiser as scrap.

The commission’s spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed the arrest in a telephone interview with PREMIUM TIMES.

Mr. Uwujaren said the vice chancellor of the university, Shall David Joshua, and the bursar, K.E. Anjili, were among those arrested.

STATE OF EMERGENCY: Rivers Police arrest 214 robbery suspects

The two months emergency declared by the Rivers State Police Command against violent crimes came to an end, yesterday, with the arrest of 214 armed robbery suspects and recovery of 152 arms.

Speaking on the operations of the command, outgoing Commissioner of Police, Mr Chris Ezike, at the headquarters of the Police command in Port Harcourt, said 638 ammunition and 312 cartridges were among items recovered from suspects, adding that 41 different brands of vehicles , cash sums were also recovered from the suspects.

The newly appointed Managing Director of Jigawa State Television House, Alhaji Ishaq Hadeja, has vowed to recover over N136 million from the former interim committee of the station.


The committee, headed by two former Director Generals of NTA, Alhaji Muhamamd Ibrahim and Mr. Tony Iredia, with three other veteran broadcast journalists, Timawus Mathias, Adamu Aliyu Kiyawa, and Aminu Ahmed, were alleged to have received a whopping N136m from the administration of Governor Sule Lamido.

Man jailed for setting pregnant lover ablaze



An Egor Magistrates’ Court in Benin, Edo State, on Monday sentenced one Lucky Esonahae to five years imprisonment for setting his pregnant lover ablaze.

The 37-year-old bar operator was arraigned on one count bordering on causing bodily harm.

The charge read, “That you, Lucky Esonahae, on July 6, 2015, at Uwelu Quartres, Benin, in the Egor Magisterial District, did cause grievous harm to one Stella Isaac, by setting her on fire with kerosene, which cause her bodily harm and, thereby, committed an offence punishable under Section 355(B) of the Criminal Code Cap 48, Vol. II, Law of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria, 1976, as applicable to Edo State.”

Masquerades invade Ondo church,flog pastors and worshippers


A Church service was reportedly disrupted by four masquerades who flogged the pastors and the worshipers in Epinmi Akoko area of Ondo state.

One of the masquerades, Tunde Arohunmolase was however arrested while others fled after flogging the pastors and the worshipers.Police source said that the masquerades invade the Christ Apostolic Church in the town while the service was on-going and abruptly ended it.

Nigeria’s first test-tube baby secures admission into varsity



About 17 years after she was born through In Vitro Fertilisation, Nigeria’s first test tube baby, Miss Hannatu Kupchi, has secured admission into a Hungarian University to study medicine.

The medical doctor that supervised the first IVF experiment in Nigeria, Dr. Ibrahim Wada, said Hannatu’s birth on February 11, 1998, at Nisa Premier Hospital in Abuja, signalled a revolution in the practice of medicine in Nigeria.

Speaking on Sunday evening in Abuja during a brief reception and presentation of an award to Kupchi, he said, “When I was out of this country, I knew there were people who wanted babies. I made the decision to come back to Nigeria to help people. It happened on February 11, 1998 when this historic event occurred in this hospital.”

Sun Sufang, 65, sits in a chair in the front of an ivy covered house at the end of JunxingRoad in Ziyang City, Sichuan province on Aug 26. The house behind her is about to bedemolished by local government.

Sun and her family reached an agreement to leave the old house for a new one a day ago.

Sun said those ivy wines were planted by her late husband all around the house. "Heplanted for me because he knew that I love greens." Sun’s husband passed away six yearsago. "That ivy wines are precious,because they are all he left for me."

At first, Sun were not willing to move out the ivy-covered old house, where is filled with allgood memories with her husband. In order to provide a better housing condition for hergrandchildren, she finally decided to say goodbye to those 23 year old ivy wines.

23 years ago, the house is situated in the suburb of Ziyang city. Neighbors plantedvegetables around their houses at that time. Only Sun’s family planted ivy wines aroundtheir house. At time goes by, the house is now fully covered with ivy wines and becoming adreamy place for tourists.

The lush ivy wines often remind Sun of her late husband. She used to compliment herhusband, saying "Ivy wines turned our home into a dreamy place".

However, Sun’s house is about to be demolished because local government plans to buildhigher buildings there. Sun’s family will move to a new house. "I want my son and mygrandchildren to live in a new house but I’ll miss my old ivy-covered home."

A Conservative councillor is being investigated by council chiefs after sharing a photo of a boat full of 14 naked women with a caption reading: "If Carlsberg did illegal immigrants."

Mike Kusneraitis, on the Tory-run Runnymede Borough Council in Surrey, said he should be judged on his actions in the community, not by "misjudged postings on social media".

The councillor admitted making a number of "offensive" postings on a Facebook page, which have now been removed.

Ex-governor Akpabio escapes death in Abuja auto crash

                


A former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, now Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, escaped death Monday morning after his car got involved in an accident along the Airport Road in Abuja.
PREMIUM TIMES learnt that the accident occurred near the Bolingo Junction close to the Ship House, Abuja.
A witness said Mr. Akpabio was moving in a convoy of vehicles towards the City Gate when his vehicle ran into another car.

Congregation chases Lagos pastor from church for impregnating member


There was commotion on Sunday at the United Methodist Church, Mafoluku, in the Oshodi area of Lagos as members of the church rejected their pastor and chased him away for allegedly impregnating his housemaid.

It was learnt that the pastor, Barkuma Andrew, was stopped from leading the church seven months ago when the housemaid, who was also a member of the church, Grace, had complications after aborting the pregnancy.
Andrew lives with his wife, children, wife’s cousin, Favour, and Grace in a three-bedroomed flat on the church premises.

Vigilance group uncovers joint for naked female dancers



An Asaba-based vigilance group has uncovered a joint where female teenagers dance naked and has arrested the operator of the joint.

The joint, located in Asaba, hosts bizarre activities, including pornographic shows, especially at weekends.

Confirming the arrest of the operator, the vigilance group boss, Chukwudi Nnamdi, said the suspect was arrested last week Thursday and handed over to the police.

EFCC sets up four-man panel on Diezani



The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has commenced a full investigation into the activities of the immediate past Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.

It was learnt on Sunday that the commission constituted a four-member committee of crack detectives to probe all the NNPC accounts which were supervised by the former minister.

It was learnt that the committee was led by a Superintendent of Police, who was seconded to the commission.

Saudi-led coalition air strike kills 36 Yemeni civilians - residents


An air strike by a Saudi-led coalition killed 36 civilians working at a bottling plant in the northern Yemeni province of Hajjah on Sunday, residents said.

"The process of recovering the bodies is finished now. The corpses of 36 workers, many of them burnt or in pieces, were pulled out after an air strike hit the plant this morning," resident Issa Ahmed told Reuters by phone from the site.

Suspect arrested for fatally shooting uniformed Texas Deputy at gas station

                 

A man has been arrested for allegedly shooting a sheriff's deputy while he was at a gas station in northwest Harris County, Texas, at about 8:30 p.m. on Friday night.
Darren Goforth with the Harris County Sheriff's Office in Texas, was shot from behind while pumping gas at the Houston station. He was in uniform at the time. He died from his wounds. "The male suspect came up behind him and shot the deputy multiple times," Deputy Thomas Gilliland said at a press briefing.

After the officer fell, "the suspect came over and shot the deputy multiple times as he lay on the ground," Gilliland continued.

British Library rejects Taliban trove fearing terror laws

Academics have criticised the British government for creating a "climate of fear" after the national library declined to store the world's biggest collection of Taliban-related documents over concerns it could be prosecuted under terrorism laws.

A group of international researchers spent years putting together a trove of documents related to the Afghan Taliban, including official newspapers from their time in power, poems, maps, radio broadcasts, and several volumes of laws and edicts -- digitising the estimated two-three million words and translating everything into English.

It was hoped the project, which was launched in 2012 and included members of the British Library on its advisory board, would prove an unprecedented resource for academics and officials trying to understand the movement and the ongoing insurgency in Afghanistan.
