The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday reflected on its 17 years of existence and concluded that some of its pioneer members left because they could not handle the competition within the party. The party also stated that only Nigerians could explain why it lost the 2015 presidential elections in spite of the achievements in the last 17 years.
The party however denied that corruption was part of its achievement in the light of attempts by current administration to probe the immediate past administration.
National publicity secretary, Oliseh Metuh, stated this at a press conference to mark the 17th anniversary of the party. The party was officially formed on August 31, 1998.
Metuh, while responding to why most of its leading members left the party, stressed that although some left because their interest could not be honestly accommodated, he noted that most of them could not stand competition within the party.
Metuh said, “Some of our members left because of competition. If people cannot handle that competition there is nothing we can do. Some members felt that they were not well protected when they sought assistance, others left because we lost election, others for selfish reason, while some others when they felt they were honestly not accommodated in the party.”
Some of the pioneer members of the PDP that have left PDP include; former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, Alhaji Yahaya Kwande, former senate president, Prof. Iyorcha Ayu, former national chairmen, Audu Ogbeh and Barnabas Gemade.
Others are former national secretary of PDP, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, former Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, former Kano State governor, Musa Kwankwaso, former Sokoto State governor, Aliyu Wamakko, former Adamawa State governor, Murtala Nyako, Kwara State governor, Abdufatai Ahmed, the present senate president, Bukola Saraki and others.
Reacting to why PDP lost the last election in-spite of the huge achievements Metuh said,“We did our best. Only voting public can say why we lost. No party is fool proof. Why we lost has nothing to do with the achievements of the PDP.”
Reeling out the achievements of the party in the last 17 years, Metuh said the anti-corruption war was part of our achievements which led to the establishment of the EFCC and ICPC.
