‘Okija Shrine: No longer a bee-hive of activities for politicians

THE SLEEPY community of Okija in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State came into limelight in August, 2004, when the media, both print and electronic, became awash with gory stories of goings-on inside Ogwugwu Akpu, one of the shrines in the area.

Before then, Ogwugwu Akpu was just like any other shrines in Igbo land which served as checks against impunity and man’s inhumanity to man.

A middle-aged woman, Toyin Akinrosotu, was on Monday arrested by the police in Idanre, Ifedore Local Government Area of Ondo State, after allegedly causing the fatal fall of an infant strapped on the back of its mother.

A witness said the baby fell during a scuffle between the mother of the baby and the suspect.

He said the suspect, who lives at Awolata Street in Idanre, led some thugs to beat up the mother of the dead baby in her house.

The NJC issued the query dated July 28, 2015 and with reference number, NJC/S.29/HC.OS/16/1/55.

Oloyede came to prominence recently after she submitted a petition to the Osun State House of Assembly calling for the removal of Aregbesola on the grounds of his alleged financial misappropriation.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria and Chairman of the NJC, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, who personally
signed the query, directed Justice Oloyede to respond to the query within 14 days of receiving it.

The Federal Government has directed the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to retrieve forthwith all valid diplomatic and official passports from all persons who are not entitled to hold such documents.

A missing statement from a key witness has allegedly hampered the case of Nelson Mandela's 24-year-old grandson.

The witness is said to have overheard Mandela and a teenage girl talking before the alleged rape took place.

According to Sunday Sun, Nico Swart who is representing Mandela, told the court he needed more time to find the witness who could bolster Mandela's claim that the sex was consensual.

The Lagos State Government has removed the list of contracts awarded under the administration of former Governor Babatunde Fashola.

The list which was published on the website of the state’s Public Procurement Agency,www.lagosppa.gov.ng, stated that Fashola’s administration spent N78.3m on his personal website, www.tundefashola.com, in 2014.

There was pandemonium yesterday at Majidun area of Ikorodu as a Naval personnel allegedly shot three persons, leaving them in a critical condition.

Plateau State governor Simon Lalong yesterday took his kinsman and suspended comptroller-general of the Nigerian Immigration Service, David Parradang, to Aso Villa to plead with President Muhammadu Buhari.

Parradang, a native of Plateau State, was last Friday suspended from office indefinitely over allegations of illegal recruitment exercise and the porous state of the Immigration Service.

Obasanjo backs Buhari over ultimatum on Boko Haram

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for given ultimatum to the service chiefs to end the Boko Haram insurgency by November.

Obasanjo gave the commendation on Saturday in Abeokuta while addressing officials of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), who paid him a courtesy visit at his hilltop residence.

City paramedics arrived at the apartment of Marie Bowman, 70, on 111th Street around 1.15pm Friday and quickly realized that she was too large to fit through the front door of the dwelling.

The Nigerian Army has recalled over 2,500 soldiers who were asked to withdraw from service for alleged offences committed under the counter- insurgency operations code named Operation Zaman Lafiya.

The review panel set up by the Army, which began sitting in Kaduna on August 17, has also screened and reinstated 102 officers, who were sentenced or facing prosecution in relation to the operations in the North-East.

Former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki

The Department of State Services has charged a former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), to court over illegal possession of firearms.

The service, in a statement by a DSS official, Tony Opuiyo, on Monday in Abuja, said Dasuki was charged to court for owning firearms without license.

Two trailers suspected to be carrying logistics support to members of the Boko Haram Terrorist sect have been intercepted and destroyed by the Nigerian Air Force Agusta helicopter on armed reconnaissance mission around the Nigeria-Cameroon border.

The trailers were covered and parked at different locations in the bush around the border town of Belel. The recent air operation against the BHTs was commanded by the Chief of the Air Staff, CAS, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar from NAF reconnaissance aircraft, the King Air 350i.

The Rivers State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed the corruption allegations against immediate past Governor of the State, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi, with a wave of the hand.

The party in a statement issued Sunday morning in Port Harcourt by its State Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, said that the latest allegation by the wailing Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike camp that Amaechi has foreign bank accounts lacks substance.

A 34-year-old widow and mother of four in Egwudunagu village, Amachi community in Abakaliki Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Mrs. Ogodo Egede has allegedly been raped to death by one Alex Nwabu, a 40-year-old man in the area.

Nwabu, who allegedly committed the act in the deceased house in the night, was said to have been having constant affair with the widow with a threat to kill her if she dared disclose it to anyone.

Edo state governor, Adams Oshiomhole has alleged that a whooping N140bn was paid as consultancy fee for the construction of a second Niger bridge by the last administration. Oshiomhole said this while reacting to insinuations that the Buhari led government was victimizing the Igbos because they did not vote for him. He said if at all there was any victimization, it was in the last administration.

The International Criminal Court has commenced investigation of the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, for statements made about the Igbo’s in the build-up to the Lagos governorship election.

In the statement, available online, Mr. Akiolu vowed that Igbos in Lagos who voted against his preferred candidate, Akinwunmi Ambode, would sink in the Lagoon. Mr. Ambode of the APC eventually defeated Jimi Agbaje of the PDP in a highly contested election.

Founder of the Living Faith Church, popularly called Winners Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo, has attributed the high rate of divorce cases in the world to the belief in women liberation.

Oyedepo who presided over the third service of his church in Ota, Ogun State on Sunday, noted that the increasing call and approval of equality between women and men have spilled into their marital lives.

Apparently in the Corinthian church, there was a man who was sleeping his father's wife (not his biological mother but a woman his father had married). The church was actually boasting about how liberal and tolerant they were. So Paul confronted them, saying, "And you are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he who has done this deed might be taken away from among you" (1 Corinthians 5:2).

Researchers at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health in Boston have revealed that moderate consumption of alcohol doesn't prevent health problems, especially among women. The results were published in the British Medical Journal on August 18.

Alcohol remains one of the main risk factors for numerous cancers, especially those of the colon, liver, larynx and esophagus. However, until now, research had specifically targeted those with a high alcohol intake.

For this study, researchers from the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health in Boston decided to follow a group of men and women who consumed alcohol in moderation (two glasses for men and three for women).

Police in Nsukka, Enugu State, on Saturday arrested two masquerades in Ovoko community, Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area of Enugu State for robbing a trader along the Nsukka-Obollo-Afor Road.
It is learnt that before their arrest, masquerades had for a few weeks continuously mounted road blocks in such areas as Eha-Alumona, Ovoko-Obollo-Afor, among several other public roads, inflicting heavy wounds on motorists and dispossessing them of their valuables.

A woman who got involved with a Satanic sex cult has revealed how her mother made her sleep with 1,800 men by the time she reached 18.

A final year Engineering student of Madonna University, Akpugo campus, Enugu, Stanley Okoye, has narrated how he and his friend, Lord Galim, were allegedly assaulted, locked in a vehicle boot and abducted by the institution’s Dean, Student Affairs, Rev. Okoye alleged that he was beaten so badly that he suffered a spinal injury and sustained cuts on his face and all over his body while his friend had a fractured upper and lower jaws, internal and external ear injuries, torn lips, bloodied eyes and abdominal and chest pains.
