Democracy Day: El Rufai, Deputy, Cut Own Salaries By 50%

Immediately after being sworn in as Kaduna State 22nd Goovernor, by the Chief Justice of Kaduna state, Justice Tanimu Zailani by 10:15am Friday, Mallam Nasir El Rufai addressed the state and said he was contributing 50% of his salary and allowances to Kaduna as a mark of his sacrifice.

He said that his deputy, Arc. Balla Barnabas Bantex had also agreed to make the same sacrifice.He however warned that it was a gesture he would also expect from citizens of the state when called upon to do so.

Disagreement over age difference has led to the death of a mechanic, Moruf Sanni, in the Yaba area of Lagos State.
PUNCH Metro learnt that Moruf and a resident, identified simply as Somebody, had first fought on Sunday night.
The fight was reportedly over age rivalry as Somebody claimed to be older than Moruf, while the 23-year-old victim said he was older and deserved to be respected by the former.Some elders in the community were said to have intervened and mediated between the duo.

Buhari Arrives Nigeria From The UK

President-elect Mohammadu Buhari arrived Nigeria via British Airways this morning after 6 days in the UK ...His flight landed at 5:20am at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja ahead of the Presidential inaugaration ceremony tommorow May 29th.

After living most of their lives together, Gleyns Thomas and Florence Davies, reportedly the world's oldest twin sisters, passed away within weeks of each other.

Thomas died on April 23, according to The Telegraph, and her heartbroken sister passed away less than a month later on May 20.

The twins were born in 1911 in Wales.

The Benue State Governor elect, Chief Samuel Ortom, explained that his experience as a motor park tout to his election as governor has been nothing than a divine arrangement and the handiwork of God.

Ortom said his elevation from grass to grace was due to hard work and his firm believe in God.
He said, “My journey from being a motor park tout to an elected governor is purely a divine arrangement. I cast my mind back to when I dropped out of school in Form 2 but I remained hardworking and I did not engage in crime to survive.
“One thing I know is that hard work pays and you must keep faith with God; power belongs to God and He alone gives it to whoever He will.”

President-elect Muhammadu Buhari has condoled with former President Olusegun Obasanjo on the death of his younger sister, Madam Adunni Oluwasola Eweje-Obasanjo.

A statement in Abuja by Buhari’s Head of Media Team, Malam Garba Shehu, expressed sadness that Madam Eweje-Obasanjo died at a period when her wisdom will be needed.

Former governor of Ekiti State, Otunba Niyi Adebayo, yesterday hit hard on the outgoing President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, over the nation’s crumbling economy and the hardship faced by Nigerians in the last three weeks due to fuel scarcity in the country.Adebayo, who spoke in an interview with Daily Sun, said the Federal Government, led by Jonathan failed to move the nation forward.

He said: “It is obvious by what is going on that if the PDP were to remain in power, honestly, it would have been too disastrous for this country. The Supreme Court today affirmed the August 9th 2014 election of Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun state. The state PDP Governorship candidate Senator Iyiola Omisore had approached the apex court to vacate the previous ruling of the Court of Appeal and the Osun state Election Tribunal that had upheld the election of Aregbesola. Omisore asked the court to declare him winner of the election, accusing Mr Aregbesola and his party, APC of engaging in electoral malpractice during the election.

Dignitaries are arriving for the ceremony, which will take place at the Eagle Square in Abuja. Guinean President Alpha Conde arrived yesterday. The city’s streets are festooned with flags.

A committee has started the accreditation of the media for the historic event for which all the big hotels have been booked.

House of Representatives Speaker Aminu Tambuwal yesterday gave up his seat to forestall a vacuum.

Tambuwal, governor-elect of Sokoto State, will be sworn in on Friday.

Tambuwal said yesterday that there would be no vacuum even though there was no mention of steps to be taken in the constitution in the occurrence of such development.

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a herbalist, Ismaila Abdullahi, and a prophetess, Bola Ojo, for allegedly defrauding two bank workers of a sum of N6m in the Egbeda area of the state.

The suspects, however, told PUNCH Metro that the bank workers brought the money to them for prayers without being coerced.

They added that the bank workers wanted to perform ‘money rituals’.

According to the police, Ojo is the prophetess of a Cherubim and Seraphim church in the Iyana Ipaja area, while Abdullahi is a herbalist in the Egbeda area.

Vice-President Namadi Sambo has presented the handover notes of President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration to the transition committee of the incoming government, with a promise that members of the outgoing cabinet will make themselves available for clarifications when needed.

Ahmed Joda’s, chairman of the transition committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC), received the report on behalf of the incoming administration of Muhammadu Buhari.

Anxiety at the weekend enveloped Abraka metropolis in Delta State when a suspected insane man identified as Theophilus (surname withheld) allegedly raped 22-year-old female student of the state-owned university, DELSU, when she went to get some money at a popular ATM unit.

Reports said the suspect emerged from the bush close to the ATM unit unseen by unsuspecting persons waiting to the withdraw money and allegedly pounced on the victim, identified Ejiro (surname withheld), dragged her into the bush. Her attempt to raise the alarm failed.

A man survived against the odds after his skull was ripped from his spine in a car crash.

Tony Cowan, 29, suffered injuries similar to those suffered by Christopher Reeve and was left paralysed following the crash in September last year.

His car hit a speed bump before spinning out of control and hitting a telephone poll in Newcastle. Only muscle and tissue prevented him from being decapitated.

He suffered a complete spinal cord injury and there appeared to be no brain activity so his partner of 10 years, Karen Dawson, took the decision to turn his life support machine off.

But after she, his mother Pepsi Cowan and the rest of his family had said their goodbyes, Tony opened his eyes.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday urged Nigerians to be patient with the in-coming Muhammadu Buhari administration.

Obasanjo said the expectations are enormous, but advised Nigerians to accept the fact that what was destroyed in the last eight years cannot be fixed overnight by Buhari.

He expressed the confidence that the Buhari administration would “perform,” adding that Nigerians now have a “ new opportunity” to make the country work.

Obasanjo, who quit party politics to assume the position of a statesman, spoke yesterday in his Abeokuta residence at the Presidential Hilltop Estate, where he hosted Southwest women leaders.

The women leaders, including the Iyaloja – General of Nigeria, Chief Folashade Tinubu – Ojo, were led by the Iyalode of Yorubaland, Chief (Mrs) Alaba Lawson.

But for the intervention of the police, two suspected kidnappers would have been lynched in the Odoyanta, Ijebu Ode area of Ogun State on Sunday for allegedly kidnapping a fish farmer.
