Fg Has Created Over 1 Million Jobs In Transport Sector- Minister, As Presidency Promises Issue-Based Campaign

The Federal Government has created over one million direct and indirect new jobs from the resuscitation of rail transportation by the Jonathan administration in the last four years.

Minister of Transport Senator Idris Umar disclosed this while speaking on the sidelines of PUBLIC AFFAIRS FORUM, a programme organized by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs in Abuja.

According to the Minister, the ongoing construction of new rail lines and rehabilitation of existing ones is a key component of the Transformation Agenda which has a goal of repositioning the nation’s economy for the overall benefit of the Nigerian people.

“The fundamental goal of the transport sector under the transformation agenda is to develop an adequate, safe, environmentally sound, efficient and affordable integrated transport system within the framework of a progressive and competitive national and international market economy.”

Senator Umar explained that the rehabilitation of over 90 per cent of the entire existing narrow gauge lines throughout the country is almost completed, noting that the rehabilitation was the first segment of the 25 years railway strategic plan which encapsulates the vision of President Goodluck Jonathan for the Nation’s transportation sector .

He added that the rehabilitation of 1,124km western rail line, Lagos-Kano is completed while work in the 1,657 km Eastern rail line, Port Harcourt- Maiduguri is at an advanced stage of completion with the branch line from Kafanchan – Kaduna expected to be completed before the end of this year

According to the Transport Minister, the Jonathan administration is constructing the first rail line from the Federal Capital Territory to Kaduna which is a standard gauge rail line while contract for Lagos –Ibadan standard gauge double track has also been awarded.

Senator Umar disclosed that “The Jonathan administration has signed a framework with a reputable Chinese firm for the construction of coastal railway line that will connect 10 states and add great value to Nigerian economy. This project alone will create an approximate 4 million jobs in another 5 years. We have also made giant strides in Sea transportation by partnering with the Lagos State Government and the private secor to develop the Lekki deep seaport while the process for the development of lbom deep sea port in Akwa lbom State and Badagry in Lagos are in progress”

He said that the contract for the dredging of critical parts of River Benue has been awarded and will be completed in 36 months explaining that the government had completed the dredging of the lower River Niger from Warri (Delta State) to facilitate all year navigability.

Speaking earlier, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr Doyin Okupe stated that President Goodluck Jonathan will run an issue-based campaign ahead of 2015 general elections in view of the “undeniable impact of the Presidents transformation Agenda on the lives of individuals and communities in Nigeria.

The Presidential aide said in realization of the fact that Nations are not built on sentiments and fantasies; President Jonathan’s administration has moved Nigeria further than it was when he came into office in 2011 by building infrastructure and institutions that are gradually launching the Nation into the league of emerging dominant economies.

Okupe said “this President does not believe in showmanship and empty sloganeering. He is committed to building legacies which present and future generations will be proud of. The records are there for all to see and they are a pointer to what he can still do and that will be the focus of his campaign for re-election”

Coconut Oil Kills >93% of Colon Cancer Cells In Vivo

In this newly published lab study, lauric acid (coconut oil is about 50% lauric acid) killed over 93% of human colon cancer cells (Caco-2) after 48 hours of treatment. Intriguingly, the lauric acid poisoned the cancer cells by simultaneously unleashing profound oxidative stress while strongly reducing their levels of glutathione (which is exactly what the cancer cells needed to protect themselves from the increased oxidative stress).

While we are just now discovering coconut oil’s full anti-cancer potential, its many health benefits have already been well established through medical research. It naturally kills multiple viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites. It aids digestion and liver metabolism, reduces inflammation, and promotes healthier skin and faster wound healing when applied topically. It may also be an effective aid for diabetes , as it has been shown to raise levels of the beneficial cholesterol HDL in women, improve their LDL:HDL ratio, and resulted in superior weight loss and abdominal fat lass compared to soybean oil.
Coconut oil is now being used in clinical trials for improving cholesterol in patients with chronic heart disease, in fighting Alzheimre’s, and for improving blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Coconut oil is unique in that it is about 50% lauric acid, a medium chained triglyceride that is otherwise very hard to find in our diets (palm kernel oil is also about 50% lauric acid). Interestingly, lauric acid makes up about 2% of the fat in cow’s milk but 6% of the fat in human milk, implying that humans may have a naturally higher need for this fatty acid.
These studies don’t necessarily mean coconut is the panacea of cancer what it means is that nature has provided many natural ways to combat disease and the more research we can do and the more information we can share with others gives us opportunities to possibly find cures and preventive measures using Mother Nature instead of simply putting our faith in the medical communities singular approach to disease.

Yes, we ‘fight’ over men –Aneke twin

Born in Enugu, Nollywood’s identical twins known as Aneke Twins hit the limelight in 2004 when they started acting and ever since they have continued to grow from strength to strength. Today, their movie credits include Desperate Twins, Jealous Friends and Revenge of The Gods to mention a few. In this chat with The Entertainer, the twins open up on their new film projects and their recent awards in the UK.

Excerpts:

What project are you currently working on?

We are working on premiering our new movie, it is entitled Onochie. And also, we are releasing two epic movies into the market very soon. They are entitled Heart of Isiaku and Adaora.

You have surely come a long way in Nollywood, what were your dreams growing up?

Our dream was very simple; we wanted to be employers of labour in whichever capacity. The reason for this was that we had a passion for the less privileged; we wanted to take care of the poor. Today, society has given so much to us, so we have to give back. We want to use this opportunity to thank God for the grace and the talent He has bestowed on us.

Did you guys have other plans or was it that movies just happened and you flowed with it?

As young girls we had a lot of plans no doubt. In my own case, I, Chidiebere, wanted to be a banker and my twin sister, Chidimma, wanted to be a broadcaster. But we thank God for our chosen career today; acting has given us a name.

Have you had any situation where you went for an audition, one got the role while the other got dumped?

Yes, we had a series of situations like that. We went for an audition and one of us got selected while the other was dum ped!

So how did you handle it? Did the dumped one get envious?

No, we were always together helping each other in interpreting our roles without feeling envy. We knew we needed each other, so no matter what happened, we stood by each other; there was never an issue of envy.

What dislikes do you share concerning the male gender?

We both don’t like arrogant and proud people.

What are the major challenges that come with being actresses especially since you are twins?

People recognize us everywhere we go; we can’t hide. We have lost our privacy.

How do you manage fame?

We manage fame only by the Grace of God. It has not been easy but with God, all things are possible.

Which of your movies would you say has been your most challenging?

For me, Chidimma, it is Onochie, the movie that will be premiered soon. I played the role of a man; a prince to be precise, while for my sister, Chidiebere, it is Broken Ambition were she played the role of an imbecile.

You are ripe for marriage. Why the delay despite being celebrities?

We are not delaying anything; God’s time is the best. It is written in the Holy Book that he that findeth and not she that findeth; it is the he that will find us (laughter).

Are you in any relationship now?

(Laughter) Please, we don’t talk about our private life in public.

Who are the lucky men in your lives?

Please we will not talk about that as well (more laughter).

Have you fought over a man in movies or real life?

In real life no! In movies, yes! For details you could check out films like Broken Ambition, Compulsory Risk, and Broken Soul.

Has having a twin sister been an advantage or a curse?

Being twins is an advantage and we thank God.

Could you share the experience that made the both of you cry?

Our father’s death devastated us. We miss him but God needs him most.

Which actors influenced you when you were coming up?

The actors that influenced us were Genevieve Nnaji, Mama G and Omotola; they are so true to life in role interpretation.

How do you handle male fans who want to have an affair with any of you?

We handle them like every other person who is interested in us; we handle them very well (laughter).

What advice do you have for up-and-coming actors and actresses?

Our advice to the up-and-coming is for them to be humble, patient, prayerful and above all, trust and believe in God.

Tell us about your recent awards and who are you dedicating them to?

By the grace of God we did receive awards in London. One of them was the Diamond Special Recognition Awards Worldwide. We received it for our hard work and humanitarian drive.

I can’t cheat on my wife — Okon Lagos

Nollywood comic actor, Ime Bishop Umoh a.k.a Okon Lagos and wife, Idara, speak about their union.

How did you meet your wife?

Ime: She was a bridesmaid at a wedding I anchored in November 2012.I spotted her at the wedding and I couldn’t get my eyes off her. Since I felt I wouldn’t have any other opportunity to get to know her, I approached her. I was in an emotionally tumultuous relationship at the time and I wanted to opt out as soon as possible. I wanted to roll over to the other side of the lawn where the grass is greener.

Idara: When he asked me out, I was in a relationship but he persisted. I didn’t really take him up until later. I was busy with my bridesmaid duty at the wedding and didn’t even notice his gaze. He confessed later that he could not take his eyes off me all through the wedding ceremony.

How did he propose?

Idara: He didn’t really propose the conventional way but I accepted after asking him to speak with my mother. I did this because I was unable to tell if he was serious or just looking for a poster girl that he could just be taking around to show off on set and then dump when he must have had his fill. After he spoke with my mum and she approved of him, I did too.

What was the attraction?

Ime: She is a very pretty woman and that attracted me. I needed some bright faced person that I could talk to and would smile back at me. I needed someone to calm my nerves a little.

Idara: He was and still is a very caring man with an impeccable sense of humour that I love so much.

Could the fact that you both hail from Akwa-Ibom State play a role…?

Ime: Irrespective of religion, tribe or race, I don’t hold such prejudices or sentiments. What matters most is your peace of mind and happiness.

Are you bothered about the spate of crashed celebrity marriages?

Idara: When we got married I used to pray to God to make sure my marriage works and never breaks up. I would pray that I would rather die than see my marriage break up. That way, the only reason why he would have to remarry was because he is widowed, God-forbid though.

How long did you court?

Ime: We courted for about 10 months but I had plans to get married to her from the first day. When the time came, I didn’t hesitate to make her my wife.

How do you keep romance alive?

Idara: I love cooking for my husband because he loves good food. Sometimes, he prefers I wash his clothes in the washing machine but I insist on using my hands because I just love doing that for him.

Ime: I ensure she lacks nothing within my capacity and surprise her with gifts from time to time. I also surprise her pleasurably. Also, versatility; patience and above all, grace of God are the ingredients for a lasting union.

What was it like when you met his family for the first time?

Idara: I nursed no fears at all because I have total confidence in my husband. At some point, during our meeting, he kept answering all the questions and never allowed me talk at all.

Ime: Her family members were very warm and very receptive to me the first time I met them.

Is there anything you will love to change about your spouse?

Idara: His temperament. When angry he can go to any length but would later apologise. I am praying and seriously helping him work on his anger.

Who apologises first after a disagreement?

Idara: He is also very good at apologising and never wants to see me frown.

Ime: I apologise first because I don’t have the energy to bear fury for a long time. I will have emotional constipation if I try it.

Would you have married a celebrity if you hadn’t met your wife?

Ime: No. I would not have settled down with a celebrity because paradoxically before you can have a decent family, you must have a balanced life. I cannot be running from pillar to post and my wife is doing the same- she has to be on a low key and I can be in the public eye. The two of us cannot be as busy as bees and then expect to train our children well.

As an entertainer, have you ever had issues concerning trust with him?

Idara: I love my husband’s job and have absolute confidence and trust in him. His job or female fans do not threaten me. I am his number one fan and seeing him on screen playing the stupid roles gives me so much joy. God has implanted something in him that is so different from other comedians and I don’t think he should be in another profession. This is the best job that he can do.

Ime: There is no contesting the fact that you have to respect your wife. You do not have any choice in this regard. Anyone that says I slept with a woman under the influence of alcohol is lying because if you do not nurse the intention in the first place, it won’t happen. I draw the line because I believe that life is all about prioritising. My marriage is prior and I can’t jeopardise that for anything in the world. I can’t cheat on my wife.

Do you run a joint account?

Ime: We don’t run a joint account but our accounts are tied to each other and we know how much comes into the family. Our phone numbers are tied to my account and we both get transaction alert anytime there is a deposit or withdrawal.

With the birth of your daughter, any changes?

Idara: Now that we have a child, there is divided attention and sometimes he can just take our daughter out and leave me alone in the house.

Ime: I have seen my wife move from giving me sole attention to sharing it between my daughter and I. Because, it is a girl child, I give her so much attention as well. Before I go out, I kiss her on the lips and then gave my wife a peck on the cheeks. She complains about this even though jocularly. I am blessed to have someone who shares my DNA at the end of the day.

Bleaching creams trigger kidney failure — Expert

In this interview with MOTUNRAYO JOEL, a consultant paediatrician, National Hospital, Abuja, Dr. Seyi Oniyangi, discusses issues related to the kidney failure in children.

What is kidney failure?

Kidney failure is when the kidney cannot perform its normal functions which include producing urine. At this stage, we say the kidney has failed. It also means it can no longer remove waste products from the body through urine. Someone with kidney failure is forced to retain waste products in the body.

What causes kidney failure?

There are many things that cause failure. However, some of the most common causes, in adults include hypertension – this is one of the major causes, it is called a silent killer. It damages the kidney, liver, heart and many other organs. It is one of the major causes of kidney failure. Another major case is diabetes; this is when there is too much sugar in the body. Then, too much fat. Too much fat prevents blood from flowing well, through blood vessels. This also damages the kidney. Infection, is another cause, taking over-the-counter drugs too causes kidney failure. Sometimes, even drugs prescribed in the hospital can cause kidney failure; a good example is gentamicin injection. This drug is easily available, but if not used properly can cause kidney disease. There are also drugs in bleaching creams that trigger kidney failure.

Who are the people susceptible to kidney failure?

There are two groups of people that are likely to have kidney failure; sickle cell and HIV positive persons. Over time, HIV persons are now living longer and a large percentage of them end up developing kidney disease.

Do children also have kidney problems?

Yes, they do.

What causes kidney failure in children?

The commonest cause of kidney failure in children is infection. When a child has urinary tract infection- this infection affects the kidney and the urinary tract. Some of these infections are silent in children and don’t show the symptoms we see in adults, so it’s easy to treat inappropriately. This infection then damages the kidney. Another thing that can causes, kidney failure in children is inappropriate use of drugs. We also have children that are born with abnormalities in their kidney, as they grow older, the abnormality manifests and eventually leads to kidney failure. There are also children who developed kidney disease after they were born. These children will include those with infection in the throat or skin. The kidney may overact to this infection and cause nephritic syndrome. Nephritic syndrome is one causes of kidney failure. Another thing is glomerulo nephrithis. This is when there is a swelling of the kidney following infections, toxins, drugs given to the child. This can lead to the child having kidney failure. These are the common causes of kidney failure in children.

Can people with acute kidney problem recover from it?

It all depends on the cause of acute kidney injury and the extent of acute kidney injury. It is difficult to tell how long they would take to recover. However, most people recover when are properly treated. But there are some people who, after they have recovered, may develop chronic kidney disease and end up with kidney failure in the long term. However, this is not the case for children, it has been observed that children recover better than adults.

What at the symptoms of kidney failure?

The commonest sign is swelling of the body because the person is unable pass out urine. The body ends up retaining water and other waste products which should have been passed out. Another symptom is the swelling of the face and feet. These symptoms get worse as the kidney degenerates. The person also feels tired and weak because of shortage of blood. The person may also experience headache, abdominal pain, difficulty in passing urine, however; the signs are different in victims.

How can kidney failure be prevented?

For adults, they must live a healthy lifestyle; they must develop this habit early. Hypertension, diabetes, excessive fat can be controlled by healthy living. They should eat a balanced diet on a daily basis, avoid too much protein, carbohydrate and eat little fat. We also need to drink a lot of water because the more we drink water, the more the kidney flushes out waste. We should also learn to take walks. Nigerians have become lazy; very few of us take walks. We should exercise on a daily basis. This should become a habit. We should also do regular health checks. These health checks are needed to detect diseases such as diabetes mellitus. Buying drugs off the counter should also be avoided while women too should avoid bleaching their skin. This is one of the causes for kidney failure. People should also know their HIV status. People with HIV may not be aware, and they will have the virus in their body 10 to 15 years. By the time they realise it, their kidney might have been damaged.

In children, we can prevent kidney failure, by undergoing frequent antenatal care for our pregnant mothers. Ultra sound is another useful way to detect if one’s child would have an abnormality with their kidney. We should also treat infections properly. Constantly check your child’s urine to ensure they don’t have any infection. Parents should also teach their girl-child how to clean themselves after toilet use. It should be done from the front to the back. These are just a few ways to prevent kidney failure in children.

However, early diagnosis is key. For example, an abnormality of the kidney system may make boys urinate in drips. If this happens, it means the affected child has an abnormality which can be fixed early, but if not corrected surgically, the kidney will be damaged and the child may have kidney failure. Prompt treatment of infection and not abusing drugs reduce the chances of a child developing kidney failure.

What is dialysis and what are the various types?

It is the process where waste products are removed from the body because the kidney can’t do so. There are two types; the first is chemo dialysis- waste products are removed through the blood. Blood is taken out of the person and passed through a machine that then removes waste products. After which the blood is put back into the person. This is more easily available in Nigeria. Another type is Peretoneal dialysis- fluid is inputted into the abdomen of the person and then the person carries this fluid for some time. During the process of carrying the fluid, waste products accumulate in the fluid and then the fluid is drained out and the cycle is repeated.

How long can one be on dialysis?

There are people who have been on dialysis for 10 years or longer. But dialysis is meant to be short.

How long will someone with chronic kidney failure continue with dialysis?

It depends on the cause and severity of kidney failure. However, dialysis is in stages. By the time the person reaches stage five, they will need a transplant.

What dietary change does someone who is undergoing treatment need to implement?

A good diet is important. The person needs very little salt, because their body now retains fluid. Then normal protein, not too much protein, very little oil is needed in the person’s diet. In addition, there is a substance in the body called potassium, if it is too much, it causes heart failure. Sources of potassium include apple, banana and potassium used in soups.

Is anaemia related to kidney disease?

Yes, there is a hormone produced by the kidney which is necessary to make red blood cells. But when there is kidney failure, it produces this hormone in little quantity and zero amount later on which causes anaemia.

How is kidney disease diagnosed?

There is a process, the doctor listens to the person and examines the person. There are screening tests for kidney disease. Among these is urine analysis.

How can we keep the kidneys healthy?

Water is important; it makes the body produce urine fast unlike soft drinks. Regular check-ups, healthy lifestyle, and avoidance of drugs are all necessary ways to keep the kidneys healthy.

Assemblies of God Church sacks general superintendent

The Assemblies of God Church has announced the excommunication of its past General Superintendent, Rev. Paul Emeka, from the church

But reacting to the development, Emeka told SUNDAY PUNCH the action was a “coup.”

While announcing the removal of its spiritual leader’s dismissal from the ministry with his pastoral certificate withdrawn, the church also announced the emergence of Rev. Chidi Okoroafor as the new General Superintendent of the church.

He was elected alongside three other principal officials and fifteen zonal representatives to form the new Executive Council of the church for the next four years.

The decisions were part of the resolutions reached by over 7,000 delegates of the church at the General Council meeting at its Evangel Camp, Okpoko in Ebonyi State.

At the council meeting, held every four years, the delegates reportedly decided on the excommunication after concluding that the ex-spiritual leader “had dragged the name of the church in the mud by instituting legal suits and using law enforcement agencies to witch-hunt some of their leaders.”

According to the Legal Adviser of the church, Barrister Abuka, the dismissal of Emeka was necessary and had paved the way to institute litigation against the former general superintendent, who was alleged to be “making moves with some members to take over the church.”

The church also claimed he was working with other alleged collaborators believed to be working at cross-purposes with the church’s leadership.

Commenting on the crisis rocking the church, Okoroafor said the measures were necessary to remove those whom he described as “dissidents bent on frustrating progress” in the church.

He confirmed that legal actions would be taken against Emeka and others seeking to take over the church through lawsuits.

Justifying the reasons for this, the new general superintendent said, “We cannot spiritualise legal issues. You can’t just be praying when somebody is taking you to courts. We would no long keep quiet and allow our property taken over or our accounts fraudulently run by them.”

He pointed out that the church had identified constitutional loopholes that Emeka and other capitalised on, stating that such sections would be properly addressed when an emergency council meeting holds next year.

However, the excommunicated general superintendent told SUNDAY PUNCH that he stood for reconciliation. According to him, the church has been embroiled in some crises in which a former Governor of Ebonyi State, Sam Egwu and the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria intervened in the matter.

Emeka said, “By announcing my excommunication from the church, they are trying to instill fear into people so that they can distance themselves from me. I stand for reconciliation. I have committed no offence.

“But, some people in the church organised an illegal election to remove me by force from office. They would not allow me to complete my four-year tenure in office which started in 2010. They are even threatening my life. I have petitioned the Inspector-General of Police on that.”

Canada Issues Visa Ban On Affected Countries

The visa ban was announced as part of efforts to keep the Ebola Virus Disease out of Canada, which hasn’t recorded a case yet.

The Canadian government has suspended entry visas for people from countries currently battling the Ebola outbreak.

The visa ban was announced as part of efforts to keep the disease out of Canada, which hasn’t recorded a case yet

The government said on Friday, October 31 that it is suspending visa applications for residents and nationals of countries with "widespread and persistent-intense transmission" of the Ebola Virus Disease.

Canada’s Health Minister, Rona Ambrose said via a statement that the country’s "number one priority is to protect Canadians."

Australia had previously come under fire for issuing such a ban and also refusing to send aid workers from its country to help battle the disease which has killed almost 5000 people in West Africa.

Top 5 Cancer Causing Foods to Avoid

Who isn’t afraid of the word “cancer”? we all know a family member or a friend who had it. And indeed, according to the American Cancer Society, more than one million people in the United States get cancer each year. The American Cancer Society lists many possible causes to cancer disease, including genetic factors, lifestyle factors such as tobacco use, diet, and physical activity, certain types of infections and environmental exposures to different types of chemicals and radiation.

Since I’m very interested in healthy nutrition, I’ve written in the past about the top 14 foods that protect against cancer development, but it won’t help if we eat those foods while consuming large amounts of other foods that can increase the risk of cancer. So lets have a look at these cancer promoting foods so we all know not only what to eat, but what NOT to eat (or at least reduce their intake).

1. High intake of processed foods

Many different substances are added to commercially prepared foods, such as artificial colors, chemical flavors, salt, sugar or artificial sweeteners. These additives are constantly investigated by researchers to check if any of them is thought to be a real risk.

Sometimes there is a scare about a particular additive and some additives are thought to be a cancer risk. Heavily salted, smoked and pickled foods, for example, may increase the risk of stomach cancer. This may explain why there is such a high rate of stomach cancer in Japan, where salty, pickled foods are popular. Also an epidemiological study published in June 2010 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that a diet high in salt can increase in 10% the risk of stomach cancer. Also artificial food coloring present many health risks. The research on artificial food coloring and cancer is limited to animal studies, including mice and rats, but some claim that these dyes are toxic – possibly toxic enough to cause cancer also to humans.

2. High intakes of red meat, processed meat or charred food

It has been found that bowel and stomach cancer are more common in people who eat lots of red and processed meat. Red meat includes all fresh, minced and frozen beef, pork, lamb or veal. Also processed meats posses a risk for cancer. These have been preserved in some way other than freezing and include bacon, ham, salami, sausages, corned beef, black pudding, pâté and tinned meat. When you eat processed meats, you’re almost assuredly consuming sodium nitrite or sodium nitrate, which are added to processed and cured meats to preserve color and extend shelf life. Unfortunately, these compounds can be converted to nitrosamines, which are also known to cause cancer in laboratory rats (though again, the link in people is unclear). Also hot dogs, bacon and the like may also be preserved by methods involving smoke or salt, which also increases the exposure to potentially carcinogenic chemicals.

Also charred food creates chemicals that can damage our cells, making them more likely to become cancerous. Therefore the way you cook your meat can potentially make a big difference in the cancer risk it poses to you. Well-done and char-grilled meats that are slightly burnt on the outside are among the worst foods that increase the risk for cancer.

3. Sugar

The role of sugar in the formation, growth and metastasis of cancer cells is a topic that has often divided the scientific community. There are sources that promote the idea that sugar “feeds” cancer. They suggest that eating foods with sugar makes cancer grow faster.

The opponents claim that as a result, some cancer patients avoid eating any sugar, and eliminating beneficial foods, such as fruits, that contain essential nutrients. The opponents claim that there is no conclusive research on human subjects to prove that sugar makes cancerous cells grow. Avoiding foods with processed sugar is a good idea in general, but eliminating foods with natural sugar won’t stop cancer cells from dividing. According to Mayo clinic, sugar doesn’t make cancer grow faster. All cells, including cancer cells, depend on blood sugar (glucose) for energy. But giving more sugar to cancer cells doesn’t speed their growth. Likewise, depriving cancer cells of sugar doesn’t slow their growth. The link between sugar and cancer is different – according to Canadian Cancer Society, eating lots of sugary foods are more likely to cause you to gain weight. Research shows that being overweight or obese increases your risk of cancer. This is because obesity may cause changes in hormone levels or insulin that might increase the risk of developing breast, colon or uterine cancer. Therefore limiting the amount of sugar in your diet is important. Diets high in sugar and refined carbohydrates can lead to overweight and obesity, which indirectly increases cancer risk over time. On the other hand, new research suggest a different approach, and you can read more about it here.

Sugar can be found not only in obvious foods such as cookies, cakes, sodas, soft drinks and other sweets. Sugar can be found even in pasta sauce, salad dressing and canned vegetables. So when reading food labels, look for sugar listed as the first ingredient and be aware of hidden sugar names: fructose, lactose, sucrose, maltose, glucose, dextrose. Natural sugars such as molasses, honey and maple syrup contain beneficial antioxidants but those, too, should be consumed in moderation. If you tend to have sugar cravings, you may want to read my article 13 effective ways to quit sugar.

4.  Fried food, French fries, potato chips and snack food

French fries, potato chips and other snacks may contain high levels of acrylamide, another carcinogenic substance that forms when foods are heated at high temperatures, such as during baking or frying. Acrylamide may be found in any food heated to a temperature above 250° F, but potato chips and French fries have been found to contain the highest levels among foods tested. Cooking methods such as frying, baking or roasting are more likely to produce acrylamide, while boiling, steaming, and microwaving appear less likely to do so. Longer cooking times and cooking at higher temperatures can increase the amount of acrylamide in foods further.

It must be mentioned that prolonged exposure to acrylamide has caused a range of tumors in animal tests (rats and mice), whereas most of the human studies published so far have failed to find any links between acrylamide and various types of cancers. However many believe it has a potential to be a human carcinogen because of those animal studies. If you’re still worried, the FDA and other public health groups say the best way is to follow the general advice on healthy eating, including limiting the consumption of fried and fatty foods.

Another components found in these type of foods that may increase the risk for cancer are trans fats or trans fatty acids. These are formed when manufacturers turn liquid oils into solid fats via a process called hydrogenation.  And indeed, trans fats can be found in many foods including vegetable shortening, margarine, crackers, cereals, candies, baked goods, cookies, granola bars, chips, snack foods, salad dressings, fried foods, fats and many other processed foods. Trans fats cannot only increase your risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, but the high intake of trans-fatty acids may have a direct association with prostate cancer in men, which ranks number one among the most common malignant cancers in American men. Chronic inflammation plays an important role to the development of prostate cancer and the association of trans-fats and chronic inflammation may explain the link between prostate cancer and trans-fatty acid ingestion. However, further studies and clinical trials are needed to establish this fact.

5. Excess alcohol

There is a strong scientific consensus of the link between alcohol drinking and several types of cancer. The more alcohol a person drinks regularly over time—the higher his or her risk of developing an alcohol-associated cancer. According to Cancer Research UK and American Cancer society, alcohol can increase the risk of a number of cancers, such as mouth cancer, liver cancer, breast cancer, bowel cancer and throat cancer.  You’ve probably heard about other studies that have found that certain substances in red wine, such as resveratrol, have anti cancer properties, but like many thing in life moderation is the key. As part of its guidelines on nutrition and physical activity for cancer prevention, the American Cancer Society recommends that people who drink alcohol, limit their intake to no more than 2 drinks per day for men and 1 drink a day for women.

Boko Haram leader says all kidnapped girls married

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) — Nigeria's kidnapped schoolgirls have all been converted to Islam and married off, the leader of Nigeria's Islamic extremists claimed in a new video message.

The leader of Boko Haram also denied he had agreed to any cease-fire with the government.

Abubakar Shekau dashed hopes for a prisoner exchange to get the girls released in the new video released late Friday night.

"The issue of the girls is long forgotten because I have long ago married them off," he said, laughing.

Boko Haram's kidnapping of 276 schoolgirls taking exams at a boarding school in the remote northeastern town of Chibok in April prompted international outrage and criticism of Nigeria's government for not acting quickly to free them. Dozens of the girls escaped on their own in the first couple of days, but 219 remain missing.

Unconfirmed reports have indicated that the girls have been broken up into several groups and that some may have been carried across borders into Cameroon and Chad.

The government had said it had negotiated with two Boko Haram leaders in Chad, with talks hosted by President Idriss Deby, and that it was confident the girls would be freed soon. But Boko Haram has many factions.

Shekau also threatened to kill an unidentified German hostage in the video, which was received by The Associated Press through the same channels as previous messages.

"If we want to, we will hack him or slaughter him or shoot him," he taunted.

A German development worker was kidnapped at gunpoint in northeast Gombi town in July.

Germany's Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier last week told reporters in Abuja, Nigeria's capital, that he had no new information about the abductee.

A previous video in October showed the beheading of a man whom friends identified as the pilot of a missing fighter jet that Boko Haram claims to have shot down.

Nigeria's chief of defense staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh, on Oct. 17 announced that Boko Haram had agreed to an immediate cease-fire to end a 5-year-old insurgency that has killed thousands of people and driven hundreds of thousands from their homes in northeast Nigeria.

But attacks and abductions have continued unabated. This week the rebels seized Mubi, a city of more than 200,000 people. Fighting also continued Friday in Vimtin, the nearby village where Badeh was born.

Shekau in August announced that Boko Haram wanted to establish an Islamic caliphate, along the lines of the IS group in Syria and Iraq. Fleeing residents have reported that hundreds of people are being detained for infractions of the extremists' version of strict Shariah law in several towns and villages under their control.

Shekau's announcement further discredits the government of President Goodluck Jonathan, who on Thursday formally announced his candidacy for elections on Feb. 14, 2015 in Africa's most populous nation. Nigeria, with some 160 million people, is divided almost equally between Muslims who dominate the north and Christians in the south. The West African nation is the biggest oil producer on the continent and has its biggest economy.

Congo crowd kills man, eats him after militant massacres: witnesses

BENI Democratic Republic of Congo (Reuters) - A crowd stoned to death a young man in northeast Congo on Friday before burning and eating his corpse, witnesses said, in apparent revenge for a series of attacks by Ugandan rebels.

The incident in the town of Beni followed a number of overnight raids in the area blamed on the Islamist group ADF-NAUL, who are thought to have massacred more than 100 people this month, using hatchets and machetes to kill their victims.

Witnesses said the man, who has not been identified, aroused suspicion on a bus when passengers discovered he could not speak the local Swahili language and that he was carrying a machete.

Speaking from the town of Beni, Congo's President Joseph Kabila said the ADF-NALU militants would face the same fate as the rebel movement M23, which was defeated by a U.N.-backed government offensive last year.

"There is no question of negotiation with the terrorists," Kabila said in a speech at a local hotel. "They will be defeated as was the case with the M23. And it will be very soon."

ADF-NALU is an alliance of groups opposed to the Ugandan government that has operated from bases in neighboring Congo since the mid-2000s, undermining Kinshasa's grip on the area.

The movement was blamed for the deaths of 14 people, killed early on Thursday in the village of Kampi ya Chui, bringing the total death toll this month to at least 107, said Teddy Kataliko, president of the Civil Society of Beni.

Tensions ran high in the town on Friday morning with around 100 demonstrators blocking the road from the airport into town, throwing stones and waving machetes to demand greater government protection against the rebels.

Local government officials could not immediately be reached for comment. Earlier in the week, the government sought to downplay the threat posed by the group, which it had previously said was defeated in an operation earlier this year.

Estimates of its strength vary greatly, but the website of the U.N.'s peacekeeping mission in Congo estimates it has around 500 fighters.

The Ugandan government has said ADF-NALU is allied with Somalia's al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab movement, but analysts say the nature of these ties is not clear, despite the ADF-NALU's clear Islamist ideology.

In his speech on Friday, Kabila appealed for public support for a ramping up of its offensive against the group, but did not specify what that would entail.

"I call on the population to support the army because the victory against the M23 was because the population was behind the army," he said. "I call on young people to join the army in great numbers."

Kabila also defended the U.N. peacekeeping mission known as MONUSCO following criticism from locals that it had failed to defend them and had even collaborated with ADF-NALU.

Crowds of mainly young men attacked several peacekeeping facilities with stones and bows and arrows last week, forcing the evacuation of some staff.

The U.N. mission says it has stepped up patrols in the area in the wake of the massacres.

Families of Chibok girls shocked at marriage claims

Families of the 219 schoolgirls held for more than six months by Boko Haram militants on Saturday said they were shocked but not surprised at fresh claims that the teenagers had been married off.

Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau made the claim in a new video obtained by AFP on Friday, in which he also said that all the girls had converted to Islam and rejected claims of a ceasefire and peace talks.

The head of the Chibok Elders Forum in the northeast Nigerian town, Pogo Bitrus, told AFP: “It (the claim about marriage) is shocking to us, although we know that Boko Haram is not a reliable group.

“We were sceptical about the talks to release our girls and we never took the ceasefire seriously because since the announcement, they have never stopped attacking communities.

“Therefore the information that our girls have been married off is not surprising to us,” said Bitrus, whose four nieces are among the hostages.
“We are only hoping the government will step up whatever efforts it is making to quell the insurgency.”

Nigeria’s military and presidency said on October 17 that they had reached a deal to end five years of deadly violence in the country’s northeast, as well as agreement to release the Chibok girls.

But violence has continued unabated, including a triple bomb attack on a bus station in the northern city of Gombe on Friday, which killed at least eight and injured dozens more.

Shekau indicated in earlier video messages that the girls would be sold as slave brides and that some, but not all, had converted to Islam.

His latest claim that they were now all Muslims and had been “married off” chimes with testimony from former hostages that forced conversion and marriage are commonplace in Boko Haram camps.

Human Rights Watch said in a report published this week that upwards of 500 women and girls have been kidnapped since 2009, although some estimates put the figure at more than 1,000.

Enoch Mark, a Christian pastor in Chibok whose daughter and niece are among the hostages, said the girls’ families were “lost for words”.

“Since they were kidnapped we have no certainty about the situation they are in. We keep getting conflicting information,” he added.

They were “ironically lucky” that world attention has focused on the Chibok girls, he added, but said their situation was part of a wider issue.

“Only God knows the number of girls kidnapped by Boko Haram,” he said. “We only keep hoping that they will be returned to us and if they are not we take solace in God.”

Nigeria protests maltreatment of citizens over Ebola; names 22 culprit countries

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Aminu Wali, on Friday protested the continued discrimination and profiling of Nigerians by some countries over the outbreak of the Ebola disease in West Africa.

At an interactive session with members of the diplomatic corps, Mr. Wali named 22 countries that had targeted and discriminated against Nigerians, since the index case of Ebola in Nigeria.

He said it was regrettable that discrimination against Nigerians persisted, in spite of the World Health Organisation, WHO, declaration that Nigeria was Ebola-free.

He said it was regrettable that some countries had chosen to flout WHO rules and protocols on preventing the spread of the virus, through deliberate policies of stigmatisation and discrimination.
He said the foreign ministry has received unpleasant reports that Nigerians have been targeted and discriminated in Bahrain, Cote d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea and Cameroon.

Other countries discriminating against Nigerians are Cuba, Gabon, China, Egypt, Hong Kong, Kuwait, Qatar, Sri Lanka, Turkey and Zambia.
Also in the list are Mauritania, Sao Tome and Principe, South Africa, United Arab Emirates, Ukraine, Namibia, Seychelles and South Sudan.
The minister expressed dismay that even top government officials on working visits abroad had suffered discriminatory practices by the countries.

He noted that it was “intriguing’’ that it took time for the international community to acknowledge the valiant and effective measures taken by Nigeria to contain the spread of the deadly virus.

“It is therefore, my hope that this briefing will assist in expunging any negative notion about the Ebola Virus in Nigeria,’’ he said.
Mr. Wali called on the international community to increase assistance to the countries afflicted with the deadly virus.

He pledged that Nigeria would continue to assist neighbouring countries and share its experience on the successful control of the virus with the rest of the world.

A Nigerian, Suleiman Mohammed, who is the Honorary Consul to Mongolia, recounted how he was detained for six hours in Seoul after alighting from his flight.

He said he was detained for several hours by the immigration authorities in South Korea alongside with Nigeria’s ambassador to South Korea, Amb. Desmond Akawor.

Mr. Mohammed said the incident happened on September 9.
He added that he was subjected to the same treatment when he was transiting through South Korea even after he had shown no symptoms of the virus.

In his remarks, the High Commissioner of Trinidad and Tobago partly blamed the discrimination against travellers from West Africa on the international media and ignorance.
“From Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean, there is mass hysteria and ignorance on this issue (Ebola).

“The international media is constantly reporting that there is Ebola in West Africa and some people think West Africa is a country and not a region and in the Caribbean that understanding is not clear.’’
He cited an incident where union workers at a port in Trinidad and Tobago refused to board an oil-tanker that berthed in his country from Gabon.

He said there was hysteria that the vessel that arrived from West Africa may have been exposed to Ebola.
Meanwhile, South Sudan has refused entry to Nigerian Foreign Service officers deployed to the country because of Ebola.

In his contribution, the South Sudan Ambassador to Nigeria, Parmena Mangar Riak, claimed that after the WHO certification on Oct. 20, some Nigerians received their visas to travel to the country last week.

Dean of the Diplomatic Corps and Cameroon Ambassador to Nigeria, Salaheddine Abbas-Ibrahima, claimed that many countries had lifted restrictions on travel from people from Nigeria after the WHO certification.

He assured the minister that “in a matter of days” there would be total lifting of the ban on restrictions of travel by Nigerians by the remaining countries.

The ambassador who did not name the countries that had relaxed the ban said that Cameroon would take advantage of the Ebola information centre, established by the Federal government. He said the centre would serve as a source of information for countries to plan their national response to the deadly virus.

"I Am Very Comfortable Showing Off My Curves"

Fast rising Nollywood actress Yvonne Jegede clears the air stating that she doesn't expose her cleavage.

The actress and model who was featured in 2face Idibia's 'African Queen' video had an interview with Encomium Magazine on October 29, 2014 where she addressed the issue of showing off her boobs.

The Edo born actress went to Cyprus to get a university degree after which she returned to the Nigerian acting scene. After being accused of developing a habit of showing her cleavage when she returned to Nigeria she responded saying " I don’t expose my cleavage, it was a photo shoot. You don’t see me walking on the street with my cleavage hanging out. It was a photo shoot. I felt I have some features that people should know of.

Even with that, some people still believe that she has a lot of boobs but no behind, that is wrong. I am coming out to showcase. I think the older I get, the more comfortable I am in my skin. You get secured, more confident with age. If I feel very comfortable showing off my curves, my cleavage, excuse me, it is my body. But I will not walk around naked. I wear whatever I am comfortable with".

Linda Ikeji kept begging me after we broke up...I took her for granted' – Dan Foster tells it all

Aww, what a love story!
Popular Nigerian-based American On-Air Personality Dan Foster in a new interview with Punch has opened up on his affair with top blogger Linda Ikeji, why his 16 year old son is into drugs, and more, read below:

Do you have regrets coming down here?

The only regret I had was that in 1999, I had a son in the US. I had to go to my dad and I told him, ‘Dad, I think I like my job more than being married now. I would do anything for that job but then, I just met this woman and she just had a baby for me.’ He is now 16. I was mad at him last year.

My ex sent me some of his pictures and I knew he was doing drugs. He had everybody fooled as if he was a cool kid. I feel so guilty because I am sitting here making all the money and I didn’t spend time with him. You have to spend time with your kids or you would lose them. Sometimes I would call him and he wouldn’t have anything to say.

I would ask him how he was doing and he would just say ‘fine.’ I would scold him and tell him to say something more than one word.

I would tell him to ask me questions and he would say he didn’t know what to say.

Did you ever smoke weed?

Yes. I remember one time I smoked weed and my father came in and asked me, ‘what is that stupid look on your face? You must have been smoking that stupid stuff because you look so stupid!’ I never smoked it again. But I was even 18. But my son was 14 when he started smoking weed.

I was so pissed with his mum because she didn’t even know what he was doing. Now, I am trying to get his head together and make sure he does well in school. My only pain is that I needed to have been there for this kid. But I have three kids now and I love them to death.

Was your absence the major reason he did drugs?

I could have communicated more with him. He needs a role model. I spoke to my ex’s new guy and I asked him why he didn’t watch over him. He said he tried to talk to him. I told him I was annoyed with them. I told him I would have watched over the kid and found out who he was hanging out with. He told me he was hanging out with a white kid. But he is doing better now.

He is communicating with me now.
Why did you marry a Nigerian?
My father told me that my ex had moved on. In fact, he told me then that she looked heavy.

I asked what he meant and I was told she was pregnant. I knew she had really moved on. But then, I didn’t marry again till almost four or five years later. I was taking my time after that. It wasn’t something I wanted to jump into.

But then, I did have so many options.

We knew you had options including Linda Ikeji…

Oh yeah! I remember Linda asking me what she did wrong. She went on and on.

My wife always tries to delete her number no matter how I tag it on my phone.

She would always figure the number out and she would find out what I use to code it. My wife is so strong and she is the right woman.

I love her because she didn’t know who I was when I met her at the theatre. She still didn’t know who I was for almost two weeks after.

We just had a great conversation. My sister kept asking me how I would find somebody that would love me for who I am. I put my wife to that test.

She didn’t know me. It was two weeks later that people in her office asked her if she knew who her boyfriend was and they told her.

She told them she didn’t know and she hadn’t even heard me on radio.
But Linda is doing well now; don’t you feel you should have married her?
She is a nice kid. I hope she is able to find someone but she has to find the right person.

She is really into what she is doing. She is an honest kid. I thought I wasn’t good enough for her. I kept asking her why me.

But she was really into me. I couldn’t believe it. I took her for granted. I felt she could always find a fine model on the runway. But she was so really serious about me. She was in love with me. But it didn’t work out.

I took her for granted and I was dating another person while I was dating her. I tried to keep a relationship in Abuja, another in Warri while she was in Lagos. Ah! It was a nightmare. I wouldn’t want to go through that again.

I had three beautiful women at a time and I lost them all. They were all waiting. One of them knew about all the rest. She could have been the one. I hurt her so badly.

She even left the country after we broke up. I felt bad. I went to the cinema to get my head together on a
Saturday morning and that was where I met my wife. See how God works. Look at my kids. They are wonderful children.

Do we see you going back to stay in the US?

One day, I have to. But my family went to the US recently. They saw my
relatives. I didn’t go with them. I wish I went with them. I am still looking forward to that day to happen. We are hustling at the moment. We will do it at the right time. The US is a great place but a man needs to be where he is known. This is where my job is. We would visit and enjoy those places.

I have made this place my home because my work is so relevant to me. My job is important. The satisfaction I get when I am working is big.

You have not mentioned anything about your mother

My mother died when I was 10. There was no mum around. It was just dad. I had a good relationship with my dad. In fact, it was the best.

I talk about him a lot. He is full of wisdom. He sounds so clever. He started taking care of us when my mum died. My siblings are cool too.

You must have fully adapted to Nigerian system now.

I am trying. It is just that I see fish in
everything I eat. I am allergic to sea
food. How can somebody put fish in
beans? It is just ridiculous.

Civilian JTF Beheads 41 Boko Haram Fighters

Forty one members of the Islamic fundamentalist group, Boko Haram, were beheaded by the vigilante group in a Borno village, Gur, it was gathered on Friday.

A member of the youth vigilance group in the area, Mala Yusuf, recounted that after a failed attack on Sabon Gari in Damboa Local Government Area of Borno state, a combined team of military men and members of the vigilance group otherwise know as Civilian JTF, went after the insurgents and killed 41 of them.

He said the militants were pursued from Sabon Gari, in Damboa Local Government to Gur area around Mandafuma village, in Biu Local Government Area, where they engaged the sect members in a gun battle which lasted for about two hours.

He said after the clash, 41 members of the sect were killed.

He said as a proof that they were killed, the youth vigilance members severed the heads of the terrorists and brought their heads to show to the public.

He said, “The vigilance beheaded the insurgents after the shootout and took their heads to Biu to show the people that the Boko Haram insurgents are human and not some beasts and so, people should not fear them but to join hands with security operatives to ensure that the sect, who are enemies of Islam and the people of Nigerians, are defeated.

We heard that the insurgent went to attack Sabon Gari, where people are just returning to their homes after three months of exile as internally displaced persons in various camps across the state. We went after them to foil the planned attack.

“We were able to repell them and seeing that they headed towards Mandafuma in Biu Local Government, we went after them and we were able to ambush them at Gur.

“We engaged them in fierce battle with the soldiers and 41 of them were killed, one of them was taken alive.”
