Emenike hits brace, lifts Super Cup

Emmanuel Emenike is living up to expectations as a quality replacement for departed Asamoah Gyan at UAE club Al Ain as his two goals made the difference in their 4-2 Arabian Super Cup victory over Al Nasr on Saturday.

It was his debut appearance for the UAE Pro-League champions, but his second gold medal within eight days. He was an unused substitute on August 8 when Al Ain won the Emirati-Moroccan Super Cup after beating Wydad Athletic Club of Morocco 5-4 via penalties following a 3-3 draw in regulation time.

The former Fenerbahce player produced a performance of tireless running in the encounter in Abu Dhabi as the league champions proved they are still the team to beat in the UAE.

Emenike joined the team in the summer after Ghana captain Gyan was sold to Shanghai SIPG last season after a prolific four-year spell.

The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner celebrated on Instagram and Twitter, writing, “Super Cup winner; another gold, two gold.” And he posted a picture of himself and the trophy.

The 28-year old Nigerian had opened scoring in the third minute with an assist from former Liverpool winger Ryan Babel, but the opponents hit back through Jamal Maroof in the 49th.

Al Aim took the lead again with Mohammend Fayez strike in the 66th minute; and Emenike extended the lead three minutes later.

Ismael Ahmed made it four goals for the champions before Rashed Mohammed put one back for the Al Nasr.
