The Tipper Owners and Drivers Association of Anambra State, on Tuesday, protested against alleged arbitrary increase in sand beach levies and environmental fees by the state government.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the drivers, numbering more than 1,000, were at the Government House, Awka, the state capital, with their vehicles for the peaceful protest.
Mr Solo Chukwudobelu, the Secretary to the State Government and others who were present during the protest declined to comment.
Mr Boniface Ezekwesili, who led the truck drivers, told newsmen that the state government increased the levy from N100 to N200 and then N1,000 without consulting them.
He said they were paying N100 to the past government but after much pressure from the new government, they agreed to pay N200 per trip of sand or stone.
Ezekwesili said that they were surprised when the government, through an agent, came up with a fee of N1,000 per trip.
"We are ready to pay N200 into the government's accounts instead of paying those consultants who are deceiving the government that we can pay any amount," he said.
