No fewer than 10 buildings and an electric transformer in the Agu-Awka area in Anambra State were submerged on Monday following a downpour.
The rain, which lasted about seven hours, destroyed properties worth millions of naira, including academic certificates of residents whose apartments were flooded at Agu-Awka Estate.
The flooding also affected major streets of the capital city, including the Zik Avenue, Arthur Eze Street, among others.
Besides, vehicles were stuck on roads for hours.
Some of the affected residents, who spoke to our correspondent, said they had been experiencing the ordeal during rainy season for the past five years.
They expressed fears that it might be worse soon. They called on the Anambra State Government to work on the drainages in the area.
Mrs. Jacinta Walters, a resident of Nwakpadolu Estate, said she had been living in the area for the past three years and that her apartment had been flooded five times during which her valuables were destroyed.
Walters attributed the flooding to the bad drainage work due to the construction of CPHA Road by the state government.
“My television, mattresses, certificates and children’s academic files were all destroyed. My house was filled with water up to window level, and you can see my children scooping water out of the house.
“The neighbours here were not around but we have to break the door to save their properties. Their kitchen and toilets were already under the water,” she said.
Another resident, Mr. Okafor said the flood had become a great danger to the people in the area. He said various reptiles, including snakes and crocodiles, were seen floating on the water after rainfalls.
