Olumide who was attached to the Ikotun Fire Station, had collapsed in a well at the Ijegun area of the state while bringing out a plumber identified as Tobi Akintoye on May 11. Akintoye was digging a well for the residents when he became suffocated and drowned. So, the 34-year-old firefighter was let down with a rope into the well to bring out the plumber. Unfortunately, while he was being drawn up out of the well, the rope around his waist suddenly snapped, and he fell back into the well...
He was later rescued by other firefighters and rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, where he died on May 12 due to the injuries he sustained during the tragic incident.
According to an official of the state fire service, Olumide who jined the service in 2008, has been buried on Tuesday at his hometown in Ogun State.
“It was very painful. This is a case of the rescuer becoming the victim. We all mourn him.”
May his soul rest in peace. Amen.
