‘Plateau, Kaduna Rank Highest In Number Of Widows’

A non-governmental organisation which caters for the need of widows, widowers and orphans across the country, Christian Care for Widows, Widowers, the Aged and Orphans (CCWA), has said that Plateau and Kaduna states have the highest population of widows in the country.

President and founder of the group, Prof. Deborah Ajakaiye, made this known yesterday during a media briefing to announce its four- day 23rd anniversary celebration.

She revealed that violent clashes between Fulani herdsmen and farmers and Boko Haram insurgency are leading causes of deaths in the country.

“CCWA has over 475 centres spread across 31 districts in 19 states and the FCT. The membership consists of over 20,000 widows, widowers, elderly and orphans. Although CCWA has presence in all the six geo-political zones, a large number of CCWA centres are located in small villages in northern Nigeria,” she said.

According to Ajakaiye, Nigeria currently has widows running into millions, resulting primarily from incidents of clashes and terrorism

and most of them fall into destitution due to lack of care.

The president, who called for the setting up of a commission to cater for the need of widows and other disadvantaged persons, said her group has been in the forefront of bringing succour to these categories of persons without assistance from any international donor.
