That’s because an artist has made and blown up prints of other people’s Instagram photos – and he’s selling each one for up to £63,000 ($100,000).
Artist Richard Prince hasn’t even gained consent from the original snap-takers, but is reportedly ‘notorious in the art world for taking other people’s work’, before adapting them and selling the artworks on for huge sums of cash.
One of the show’s Instagram’s came courtesy of Doe Deere, who admitted that she didn’t mind that her work featured in the gallery.
‘No, I did not give my permission and yes, the controversial artist Richard Prince put it up anyway’, she wrote.
‘It’s already sold ($90K I’ve been told) during the VIP preview. No, I’m not gonna go after him’.
But while the photo owners might be keen to get a slice of the money, Prince has previously won legal battles over his work, as it falls under fair use, meaning that he’s likely to get away with his current audacious artworks.
