A drinking session went awry recently leading to a man’s death after he knocked back 56 shots of various alcohols.
The owner of the Le Starter bar in France is now being charged with Manslaughter after being accused of shirking his responsibility of stopping the 57-year-old man, known only as Renaud, from drinking so much.
A blackboard on the wall of the bar allegedly told patrons about the world record for drinking shots, which is thought to have spurred Renaud on to his extreme drinking session.
Amazingly, witnesses say Renaud has already seen off 14 shots before starting his world record attempt – which he allegedly commenced by doing 30 shots within a minute.
While Renaud’s drinking abilities, if accurately reported, are certainly impressive, the circumstances surrounding his death are not quite as awe-inspiring.
His daughter claims the bar owner whispered ’12 more to go’ into the inebriated Renauds’ ear.
After 56 shots he went into cardiac arrest and died the next day in hospital.
The prosecuting lawyer Antoine Portal said ‘inciting someone to consume’ is an ‘extremely serious mistake for a bar owner’.
The bar owner has insisted that patrons are ‘responsible for themselves’ while drinking at his establishment.
Anyone reading this before a big weekend night out: Please drink responsibly!
