Twelve others were taken to hospital after they "experienced confusion and were choking" as they tried to leave the premises.
Two people have died and a dozen others were taken ill after carbon monoxide poisoning at a recording studio in New Jersey, say authorities.
Police responded to a 911 call at about 1.30pm on Saturday and found the pair on the second floor of the Streets Rehearsal Studio in a converted factory building.
The victims were 39-year-old Noel Korman and 29-year-old Alice Park, both from Clifton.
The other 12 were taken to nearby hospitals after they "experienced confusion and were choking" as they tried to leave the premises in Passaic, according to authorities.
"This is a sad day for the city of Passaic," said mayor Alex Blanco.
"I want to thank the police department, fire, EMS and prosecutors for their fast search and rescue mission that was done," he added.
"If it wasn't for their quickness, there'd be more fatalities."
A city spokesman said hazmat teams, fire departments, ambulances and a gas company were at the scene and responders from nearby towns helped bring victims to three hospitals.
The cause of the poisoning is being investigated.
Fire Chief Patrick Trentacost said the building's sprinkler system was intact, as was the fire alarm system.
The studio's website says it opened in 1994 and has 300-400sq ft studios that offer "the serious musician a secure sanctuary in which to hone their craft".
