Cairns deaths: First picture of mum arrested after eight children found 'stabbed to death'

The bodies of the youngsters, ranging in age from 18 months to 15 years, were discovered in a property the city in northern Queensland earlier today


This is the first picture of the mum arrested after eight children were found dead in a house in Cairns, Australia.
The 37-year-old woman, believed to be Mersane Warria, was held by police investigating the tragedy.

Detective Inspector Bruno Asnicar said the woman, who was hospitalised on Friday with stab wounds, was lucid and awake and talking to police.
Asnicar said the woman was the mother of seven of the dead children.
The eighth child was her niece.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott called the incident an "unspeakable crime", adding all parents would feel "gut-wrenching sadness at what has happened".
In a statement, the premier said: "The news out of Cairns is heartbreaking.
"All parents would feel a gut-wrenching sadness at what has happened."
"These are trying days for our country.
"Tonight there will be tears and prayers across our country for these children.
"My thoughts are with the Queensland Police and all who have to respond to this terrible situation."
Queensland Premier Campbell Newman said he was deeply saddened and shocked by events.
"I ask that all Queenslanders reach out to those who may need support in coming days and do not hesitate to ask for professional assistance if needed," he said.
Cairns Mayor Bob Manning added: "I was saddened to hear that so many young lives have today been taken away from us.



"This is a truly tragic event.
"The Cairns community is in shock.
"I offer my personal condolences to the family and friends of the victims.
"I ask the people of Cairns to unite and display sympathy for those directly affected by this incident and respect for the police and other authorities who now must go about this difficult work."
The house in the Manoora suburb of Cairns was cordoned off as detectives searched the garden.
Cops described it as a "tragic event" but stressed there was no cause for public concern.
A vigil for the victims of the tragedy will take place at Cairns City Church tonight from 7pm.
