Babysitter who forced boy, 13, to carry out s*x acts on her at onesie party avoids jail

  S*x offender Mary-Ellen Mooney

Mary-Ellen Mooney rubbed the boy's thigh and kissed him before putting his hand down her knickers while babysitting him, a court heard.

Mooney committed the sex acts on three separate occasions during an evening looking after the boy who was in the house with his friend who had been playing computer games.

Two days later, Mooney sent the boy Facebook messages where she referred to him as a "babe" saying that she had "a real soft spot" for him and believed the boy had "a hidden talent."

The shocking abuse came to light when a member of the boy’s family complained to police.

Mooney was arrested and charged with two offences, which she initially denied before finally admitting her guilt on what was meant to be the morning of her trial.

Her victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had already come to court ready to give evidence against his babysitter at the trial, which was scheduled to take place last month.

Mooney, now aged 19, looked on from the court dock and showed no emotion as she was handed a suspended jail sentence today.

The offences were committed at the boy's home over the weekend of January 10 and 11 when Mooney was aged 18.

Graham Smith, prosecuting, said Mooney found her victim and his friend in his bedroom playing computer games when she arrived to babysit.

Noticing they were both wearing onesies, she suggested having a onesie party and went back home to change into hers.

When she returned, she suggested watching a film downstairs.

Mooney's victim agreed to come and watch with her, but the friend stayed upstairs in the bedroom playing video games.

Mr Smith told the court: "She started touching him on his upper thigh.

“He asked her to stop, which she did, before pretending she had been winding him up.

“He started to become sexually excited, got up and went upstairs to the bedroom.

“As she followed, she said she was winding him up and they went back downstairs.

"She put on the music channel and started dancing.

“She then sat on top of him, straddling him face to face and kissed him on the lips.

“He described it as open and closed mouth, but with no tongues. He didn't feel like he wanted to kiss her back.

"She got up and went to get a drink. The complainant went upstairs and told his friend what had happened and said it was disgusting."

Mr Smith said the boy went back downstairs and found Mooney had by now changed into pyjamas,

He said: "She sat in front of him with her back to him. She pulled his right arm around her body, as if to hug her.

"She took his right hand and placed it inside her pyjamas and onto her vagina area.

“She took her hand out, leaving his there, before placing her hand over his through the clothing and started to move his hand back and forth."

Mr Smith said the boy's hand did not penetrate Mooney's vagina.

Two days later, he said, Mooney sent a number of sexually explicit messages to the boy through Facebook.

The court was told the messages read: "We should meet up, just me and you. Keep it hush hush - don't tell [the friend].

"You are fairly mature for your age and you're not bad looking.

“I have got a really soft spot for you, babe.

“I think you have a hidden talent. I think you could handle me.

"You are going to take control of me and show your dominant side.

"It isn't about size, it's the way you use it. There's no point having a big d*** if you don't know how to use it.”

During the exchange she also said she “could get into trouble” if anyone else read the messages.

Mooney was arrested nearly a week later after the boy's family complained to the police.

During the interview she claimed the boy said he wanted to smoke cannabis, before saying he had instigated the sexual activity, Mr Smith told the court.

Sophie Murray, defending, said: "She has had to cope throughout her young life with her personal circumstances of very poor parenting.

“There was an absent father and her mother an alcoholic.

INS NEWS AGENCY LTDMary-Ellen Mooney was babysitting when she struck

“She was the carer within the family for her mother, whose alcoholism at times was very bad.

“She subsequently died when she was 13.

"She hasn't, despite that very dysfunctional upbringing, until now committed any other crimes.

“She has had jobs and hasn't sought reliance on the state for income."

She said Mooney had held jobs at a branch of Starbucks and at a telemarketing company but had lost both of them since her offending came to light.

Miss Murray said: "She has a capacity to work and look after herself and to prove that she can be a contributing member of society.

"She has accepted her guilt. She is deeply shameful and guilt-ridden about what has happened."

She said Mooney should have any jail sentence suspended so that she would benefit from one-to-one courses aimed at teaching defendants appropriate sexual behaviour - something Miss Murray said is not made available to serving prisoners.

Miss Murray added the probation service had raised concerns over her mental health, with experts saying she had difficulty recognising boundaries on sexual matters.

CROWN      Amersham Crown Court

Judge Karen Holt, sitting at Amersham Crown Court, said: "You were trusted to be the babysitter. You clearly knew what you were doing was wrong.

"I don't have a victim impact statement but there is reference in the papers I have read to [the boy] becoming withdrawn after this happening.

"I have listened very carefully to everything said on your behalf - I don't find this an easy case.

"The law reflects the seriousness of this abuse of trust on a child so young.

“As far as you are concerned, it is right I take into account the background - you have a sad background.

“You have not got into trouble despite your poor parenting.

"Bearing in mind your age and lack of previous convictions, your case doesn't meet the criteria for any form of imprisonment for public protection.

"A custodial sentence is appropriate. I have spent some time, bearing in mind all the circumstances, on whether that has to be an immediate custodial sentence.

“I am just about persuaded I don't need to send you to prison today."

On count one, of causing a child to engage in sexual activity, Mooney was given a two year prison sentence suspended for two years.

She must be supervised throughout the two years, undertake 100 hours of unpaid work and be the subject of a three month curfew between 7pm and 6am.

On count two, of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, relating to the Facebook messages, she was given a concurrent 12 month sentence, which was suspended for two years.

Mooney, of Black Heath Cresent, Bradwell Common, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, was also made the subject of a five-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, banning her from unsupervised contact with boys under the age of 16, and has been placed on the Sex Offenders' Register for 10 years.

Northern Caps Costs Between N45,000 – N120,000 And I Had 70 Of Them – Naeto C

Music act, Naeto C has said when he was much younger and feeling the vibes, the more reason he wore mostly Northern caps was because he lived in Abuja and was influenced by Northerners. Aside that, he said the cap was also cool. He told Ademola Olonilua, that he had 70 then and one costs between N45,000 – N120,000. He said he could afford to buy one of N50,000 and dash it out immediately to a fan because he was single with no responsibilities. He however admits he can’t try that now saying he is a family man with responsibilities. He also spoke about why he loves wearing native attires, saying he feels more comfortable in them.

How many of those caps did you have?

I had a lot. I had about 70 of them and those caps are not cheap. The least expensive one I bought was about N45, 000. They have some that cost as much as N120, 000. There is one they call Senator and that is what our senators wear. Those ones cost about N30, 000. They are not cheap at all. Back then, I could afford to buy them because I was still a bachelor and I did not have any responsibility. There was no mouth to feed so I could buy a cap for N50, 000 and after a show, I would dump it at home or give it out to a fan.

Why do you like wearing native attire?

It is because I am very comfortable in them. I think I have reached a stage in my life whereby I feel like it is important to do what you want to do as opposed to what the society expects you to be doing. One has to grow and you have to evolve. You have to dress in the best way that is comfortable for you. Wearing the native attire makes me feel down to earth. I have a great sense of fulfilment when I wear native attire and it makes me feel like a regular guy. Sometimes, it is not what my manager or publicist wants but at the end of the day, I don’t want to feel like I am in a cage.

I don’t want to feel like I cannot go to the mall or the bank to get my BVN. I don’t want to be in a cage because I am a superstar. Also, I love our culture and I have this sense of patriotism whenever I wear the native attire especially outside Nigeria. I am very patriotic.

40 jailed for hawking soft drinks, “pure water” in Abuja

The Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB), FCT Mobile Court, on Thursday sentenced 40 hawkers to one week imprisonment for trading in prohibited areas within the capital city.

The presiding chief magistrate, Aminu Abdullahi sentenced the hawkers after they pleaded guilty to the charge.

“Having been found guilty of one offence, the convicts are hereby sentenced to one week imprisonment for trading in (the) prohibited areas of FCT.

“Each of the convicts is also given an option of fine between N1,000 and N5,000 for the offence,” Mr. Abdullahi said.

Mr. Abdullahi however discharged and acquitted three minors and warned them not to sell in prohibited areas in the FCT again.

The convicts committed the offence on November 12 and were arrested at different parts of Federal Capital Territory.

Prosecutor Eze Eze told the court that the offence contravened Sections 35 (1d) of AEPB Act 10 of 1997.

Benjamin Junadu, one of the convicts, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that he was selling pure water at Jabi Park when he was arrested.

Mr. Junadu said he did not know that the area was prohibited for trading.

One of the minors, an SS1 student, told NAN that she was also selling soft drinks at Garki Area before she was arrested by the AEPB.

She said that “rather than stay idle at home I decided to engage in the sale of soft drinks to assist my parents.

“I promise I will not sell in such areas again.”

Khloe Kardashian has shed more light on why she called off her divorce from Lamar.Speaking on the Elle Degeneres show, she said she'd felt it was unfair to proceed with their divorce under the circumstances:

“Well I’m there helping him and I love him and I’ve always loved him.
"And that will never change and I just feel like it’s a really insensitive thing to fast forward a divorce.”“I love him and I always will and he’s a fantastic person who deserves support and love and for someone to be by his side and for me I’m that to him."On her relationship with 25 year old James Harden, she said:

“It’s definitely a very unique situation, to say the least," she said. "Yeah he’s fine with it. I mean we have to communicate a lot. And he’s really supportive and great."I think inside our circle we know exactly what’s going on and I feel sometimes it’s crazy that, yes we live so much of our life in public, but that I have to explain every step when that’s kind of frustrating.

Nnamdi’ Kanu's father-‘My son ‘ll rather die than back out of Biafra struggle’

The father of detained radio Biafra exec,Nnamdi Kanu has called for his son's release, insisting he won't stop fighting for Biafra.. HRM (Eze) Israel Okwu Kanu (JP) a traditional ruler of Isiama Afara,in Umuahia,Abia state sat down with the SUN where he talked about his son's struggles
When asked how he feels about Nnamdi’s arrest and detention, he has this to say:

“Nnamdi is my first son. His arrest pains me a lot; it is not when I start crying like a child before people will know that his arrest is paining me to the marrow. That chap has no problem, he is not a noisemaker, rather he abhors injustice. Since he was born, he had not exchanged words with we, the parents or even the siblings, always sitting quietly when we are having family meetings, but he always made quality inputs”.

On his son's arrest for fighting for Biafra, he said
“It was not justified at all because he is fighting for the freedom of the Igbo with his mouth and without a machete or gun. It is only that mouth Nnamdi is using to demand the freedom of the Igbo and whether the Federal Government likes it or not, he will continue to speak just as I used to do which made me to represent my people three times as a local government councillor. Talking runs in our blood stream and it will be difficult for Nnamdi to stop talking”.

He appealed to the FG to release his son stating..

“I will first of all start with the Federal Government, I’m appealing to them to release my son, he has not come to wage war against the country and the Nigerian constitution made provision for freedom of speech and nothing will debar him from speaking. President Muhammadu Buhari should understand that the agitation for Biafra did not start with Nnamdi. If Buhari has any bad plans against Nnamdi, he should hands off because all of us want that freedom.

As for Ndigbo, they should join Nnamdi in seeing to the actualization of Biafra. I’m not always happy that my son is putting his all in the struggle, the other man, Uwazuruike will be somewhere behaving as if Nnamdi is his enemy. I’m also not happy that since Nnamdi was arrested, no governor from this zone or a known politician for that matter has ever asked for his release, it is not good. I don’t know whether they are afraid to speak out.

Drug Syndicate Uncovered In Enugu Airport

Ahmadu Giade, the chairman of the NDLEA
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has uncovered a suspected drug trafficking cartel at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu state.
According to a statement issued on Friday, November 13, by Mitchel Ofoyeju, the agency’s spokesperson in Lagos, two officers of the NDLEA, Daniel Goska and Ndubuisi Ughor, who are indicted and currently at large, have been dismissed and declared wanted.

“Other suspected members of the group include Ifeanyichukwu Dayson, a key member of the drug trafficking organisation, and Emmanuel Okorie an Operations manager with Ethiopian Airline,” the statement read.

Among the suspects there were Henry Amaechi, a supervisor in Passenger Service Department of Nigerian Aviation Handling Company Plc, and Jacob Ezeugwu, a ticket and baggage staff at the airport.

The statement quoted Ahmadu Giade, the chairman of the NDLEA, who described the mode of operation of the drug cartel as strange. He also promised to adhere to global best practice in drug control in Nigeria.

“No bad egg in the agency will escape justice. Notwithstanding the strange way the cartel operates, I am pleased that it was exposed and ultimately dislodged.

“The agency will continue to adopt superior drug control strategies in line with global best practice. This is one sweet victory over criminal groups.

“The NDLEA is committed to the eradication of narcotics from our country and will continue to look both inwards and outwards for subversive elements,” he said.

A week ago, the NDLEA operatives arrested a 44-year-old woman, Abdulrasaq Modinat Alake, at Lagos International Airport. The woman, the Kwara state indegene, was caught with 4.450 kilogramme of cocaine.

Video: World’s First Successful Head Transplant Operation: Man’s Head Cut Off

World’s First Head Transplant A Success after Nineteen Hour Operation
A 36-year-old man has undergone the world’s first successful head transplant. The ground-breaking operation took a team of surgeons 19 hours to complete and has allowed the patient to be cancer-free.

Paul Horner, who was diagnosed with bone cancer five years ago, was on the verge of death when he was approved for the controversial and possibly deadly operation.

Doctor Tom Downey, who was part of the South African team who carried out the operation, told CNN he is thrilled about the results. “It’s a massive breakthrough. We’ve proved that it can be done – we can give someone a brand new body that is just as good, or better, than their previous one.

The success of this operation leads to infinite possibilities.”

Surgeons at Charlotte Maxexe Johannesburg Academic Hospital in SA did the operation in February but had to wait until they could confirm it was successful before they made any public statement.

Downey spoke to reporters on the complexity behind the first ever head transplant. “This procedure is another excellent example of how medical research, technical know-how and patient-centered care can be combined in the quest to relieve human suffering.”

The operation was led by Professor Myron Danus and took place on February 10, 2015.

“Our goal is for Horner to be fully functional in two years and so far we are very pleased by his rapid recovery,” said prof. Danus. “Before the operation, Horner’s body was riddled with cancer and he had less than a month to live. We were fortunate enough to find a donor body; a 21-year-old man who has been brain dead from a serious car accident that happened in 2012. The boys body worked just fine, but his brain was not functioning whatsoever, and there was absolutely no chance of recovery.

He added: “We received approval from the young man’s parents to use their sons body to do the operation. They were extremely happy their son could save a life even in the vegetated state that he was in.”The man, Horner, has made 85% recovery; walking, talking, doing things a healthy individual does…

Ronaldo: I have a few women

Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed that he does not have a girlfriend at the moment as there are "a few" women competing for his affection.

The Real Madrid superstar split with long-term girlfriend Irina Shayk earlier this year and has been linked with a host of beauties since.

Indeed, Ronaldo has admitted he has yet to decide which lucky lady will become his next girlfriend and says it's hard finding a girl who isn't interested in just his fame.

When asked by ITV whether he has a "new special someone", the Portugal ace replied: "A few. I have to figure it out. Some know [they are competing]. I am normal.

"To speak seriously, it is not easy. I know 50 per cent [of the women] approach just for [celebrity] interest... It's normal, not just me. All the famous people have these kind of problems.

"But I think I am a confident guy. I'm tall, have all my teeth, have a nice body."

Ronaldo began dating Shayk in 2010 but they endured an acrimonious split in January, with the Russian model insinuating in June that the Ballon d'Or holder had not been "faithful".

Facebook To Train Nigerian Senators On Use Of Application

The training has been fixed for next week, and is to be conducted by Facebook Africa’s head of policy.
All 109 senators and their aides are to undergo training in how to use Facebook and other social media.

The training is to help them communicate effectively on issues of public policy and good governance.

In a statement, Senator Isa Galaudu , chief of staff to Senate President Bukola Saraki, said the training is in line with Saraki’s promise to bring about a more representative legislature through use of technology and tools for an electronic parliament.

The training has been fixed for next week, and is to be conducted by Facebook Africa’s head of policy.

The Facebook team is billed to arrive Nigeria on Sunday.

House names Fayose ‘opposition leader’

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has said he is not afraid of going to jail to defend his conviction and ensure that the nation does not slide into a one-party dictatorship.

He said he was not afraid of President Muhammadu Buhari and would continue to criticise him for clamping down on former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors.

The governor spoke yesterday after the House of Assembly declared him “Nigeria’s opposition leader” for consistently speaking against perceived persecution by the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government.

The House, led by Speaker Kola Oluwawole, passed the resolution at a special sitting.

Lawmakers, who spoke at the sitting included Oluwawole; his deputy, Segun Adewumi; House Leader Tunji Akinyele; Samuel Omotoso and Mrs. Titi Owolabi-Akerele.

Fayose said: “Why should I be afraid of jail? Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Nelson Mandela were jailed. Chief MKO Abiola was clamped into detention.

“So, why should I be afraid of President Buhari? He is just going to be President for a period of time. Virtually, all former PDP governors are being tried for corruption.

“But my speaking about what the APC government is doing does not mean I am eyeing a bigger position. I am not ready to go to the Senate. Great leaders don’t think about political placement, but think about how to strive to make their country better.

“All of us cannot run away from harassment. I am an opposition figure and I want to help the ruling party through criticisms, so that it won’t sleep.

“I don’t have any apology. This is the only time I can help Nigeria by helping check oppression and dictatorship.

“But a fact remains that whether the house calls me opposition leader or not, I will remain myself.”

On why they ‘honored Fayose with the title, Oluwawole said: “Since Fayose assumed office, if you see and hear his contributions to national issues, he has been honest, frank, courageous and this shows that he is an epitome of leadership. He has also been prudent in the management of our resources.”

The Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adejugbe and the Chairman, State Traditional Council, Oba Samuel Oyebade, urged the Assembly and other Ekiti citizens to continue to support the governor.

Breakfast can boost kids’ academic grades

It is easy to let breakfast fall low in your list of priorities, but taking just a few minutes to have something to eat can really make a difference to your day.

Nutritionists say that though breakfast is not the “ultimate” of all the meals, only a few families stick to having it.

While some believe that eating breakfast makes them put on unnecessary weight; others just do not have the time for it before they head for work.

This “unhealthy culture” also affects children, as their parents hurriedly prepare them for school without bothering to give them breakfast. In the place of breakfast and perhaps for their children not to be late for school, parents just offer them lunch packs.

Reasons why many care less about the first meal of the day are, indeed, endless.

Nutritionists warn that not breaking the night fast is very dangerous to all aspects of our health and well-being.

Omolayo notes that food eaten in the morning restores glucose levels, an essential carbohydrate that is necessary for the brain to function.

She says, “Breakfast is the meal that provides the body and brain with fuel after an overnight fast – that is the idea of the name breaking the fast. When you do not eat in the morning, you are effectively running on empty stomach. It is akin to trying to start the car without petrol.

“Eating breakfast improves your memory and concentration levels. It can as well make you happier as it boosts your mood and lowers stress levels.”

On why eating breakfast is important for everyone, especially for children, Omolayo says studies show that kids who eat in the morning have higher grades in school than those who do not.

She adds that children who have breakfast grow healthier when compared to their counterparts who do not.

She explains, “The explanation is pretty simple, just like any organ in the body, the brain needs energy which comes through food to work at its best. Through good diet also, children get the nutrients they need to grow.

“Children do not store up as much calories as adult do, so they need to eat early in the morning to help them function well all through the day. Without this, they can get cranky and thus throw tantrums.”

She adds that people’s energy needs vary depending on their lifestyle and age bracket, hence growing children, who are more active, require a lot of energy.

To those who see eating in the morning as a weight loss strategy, sorry to burst your bubble, skipping breakfast actually makes you put on weight. The logic, according to Omolayo, is that you eat more during the day and late into the night trying to compensate for not eating in the morning.

She notes, “Research shows those who eat breakfast are less likely to be overweight and more likely to be within their ideal weight range compared with breakfast skippers. If you skip breakfast, you are more likely to reach for high sugar and fatty foods during the day adding more calories than you need. If you are looking to trim your waistline, don’t miss breakfast too.”

Experts at the National Health Institute, United States of America, after several studies and research say that eating breakfast has long term health benefits which include lowering one’s risks of obesity, high blood pressure, heart diseases and diabetes.

They advise parents to make breakfast an excellent occasion to eat together as a family when possible.

The NHS states, “Establishing good breakfast habits in childhood and maintaining them throughout adolescence may be an important factor in reducing the prevalence of breakfast skipping and developing good eating habits that last a lifetime.”

Meanwhile, are you at a loss as to what to put on the table every morning, here are some energy boosting foods that is good for the whole family. Try them this weekend.

Eggs

Eggs are an amazing breakfast for children. Filling them up on protein will keep them full all morning. Scrambled eggs are a fast and tasty way to get breakfast on the table. If you are really pressed for time, consider boiling eggs the night before. A hard boiled egg is “fast food” because they can eat it running out of the door. A little sprinkle of salt and pepper is all it takes to flavour this healthy food. Serve it with a slice of toast for a full meal.

Homemade oatmeal

Oatmeal is a great choice for breakfast. Your children will love the comforting flavours of this staple. Skip the heavily processed oatmeal that comes in individual portions. Cooking oatmeal from scratch is quick and simple. Steel cut oatmeal is the healthiest choice because it’s the least processed. However, it takes the longest cooking time. Soak the oats overnight to make them cook up quickly. You can also make a huge batch of oatmeal on the weekend and portion it out on the weekdays.

Yogurt

Yogurt is a great way for kids to get ample protein early in the day. Greek yogurt is thick and full of protein and calcium. It’s a better choice than some of the other types which may have very low protein amounts. Sweeten the yogurt up with a little honey and top with fresh fruit and granola. Be careful when buying or making granola- it is easy for granola to have a high fat content as it’s baked with butter or oil. Look for low fat varieties and always check the nutrition label.

Ronaldo targeted by Chelsea in sensational £70-plus million deal

ROMAN ABRAMOVICH is lining up an overhaul at Chelsea — and plans to build a new team around Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Stamford Bridge supremo is prepared to make Real Madrid an offer they cannot refuse for the Portuguese superstar. And he is willing to sell Eden Hazard, Nemanja Matic and Oscar to fund the sensational move.
Seven defeats in their opening twelve games have seen the Blues flop to 16th spot in the Premier League.
And reports in Spain suggest Abramovich sees the three-time Ballon d’Or winner — who has been strongly linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain — as the man to revitalise the faltering champions.
The Blues’ nightmare start has led to speculation boss Jose Mourinho could soon be shown the door.
Ronaldo, 30, played under Mourinho in Madrid, but Abramovich will push ahead with the deal regardless of whether the Portuguese coach is still at the club.

Sergeant allegedly rapes neighbour’s 9-yr-old daughter

OFFICERS of Edo State Police Command are investigating a sergeant, Umoru Babalola, who allegedly raped a nine-old-girl (names withheld).

It was learned that Edo State Commissioner of Police, Chris Ezike, ordered the arrest of the sergeant, following a report from the girl’s mother that the policeman, who was her neighbour, allegedly lured her daughter, a primary four pupil, and raped her in his apartment.

She said: “I came home and was told that Sergeant Umoru sent my daughter to buy him recharge card.

“I waited for her to come back, but she did not. I decided to look for her in his apartment. I knocked but nobody answered. I asked after him from his son and he said his father was inside.

“I peeped through the window and I saw him naked with my daughter crying.

“I started shouting and banging on the door. Other neighbours came out and we forced him to open the door. I took my daughter to the hospital where it was confirmed she was raped. Umoru had threatened to kill her if she told anybody.

“I reported to the police and another test was conducted in a specialist hospital, where it was also confirmed that my daughter was raped.”

Confirming the report, Edo State Police Commissioner Chris Ezike, said: “The case is being handled at the Family Unit. I have ordered that a test be conducted on the girl and we are waiting for the result.

“The command and Nigeria Police will not cover any crime among its officers and men. If it is true, he will face orderly room trial, dismissed and charged to court.”

Police nab teenager for hiding boyfriend’s gun

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a 15-year-old girl from Mbiaya, in the Uruan Local Government Area of the state for concealing a locally-made pistol that belonged to her boyfriend, Mr. Ofonime Eton, 23.

The teenager, who is a student of Itam Secondary School, in Itu, was said to have concealed the firearm in her handbag when the police intercepted a tricycle she and her boyfriend boarded.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Murtala Mani, said during a press conference in Uyo on Wednesday that when the teenager discovered that the police team on duty was about stopping the tricycle for a search, he quickly passed the gun to the teenager, who concealed it in her bag.

When asked how she came about the firearm, the girl stated that they were returning from a vigil on November 6 when the police came around their tricycle, seized the gun and arrested them. She revealed that her boyfriend was a cultist but she had not seen him with a gun before that fateful day.

“We were on our way back home from a vigil which a friend invited us to. When he (Eton) saw the police, he passed the gun to me; I collected it. So, when the police came, they collected the gun from me and arrested both of us,” she confessed.

On his own part, Eton said he finished secondary school last year. The 23-year-old said he was a member of a cult known as KK.

He said, “My girlfriend was not aware that I was carrying a gun. I was wearing a pullover and when we were coming back in the morning, she was feeling cold so I decided to give her the pullover and the gun was inside the pullover.”

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Cordelia Nwawe, also said two ladies were arrested for being in possession of hemp.

She said the two ladies were those who actually helped their brother, Anietie Simon, now at large, to sell and move the cannabis to customers.

One of the suspects, Miss Ono Simon, 18, from Idedep in the Ibiono Ibom LGA, who graduated from secondary school last year, said neither she nor her elder sister, Blessing Simon, had been involved in the illicit trade.

She said it was her elder brother, Anietie, who owned the illicit drug.

According to her, Anietie, who rented the house in which they lived, came in when they were not around and dropped the hemp in a sack where Blessing’s dirty clothes were kept.

Oshiomhole accuses Igbinedion of giving father 200,000-hectare land

Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, on Wednesday, vowed to publish records of fraud allegedly perpetrated by Chief Lucky Igbinedion, who is a former governor of the state.

Oshiomhole, who disclosed this at the Government House, Benin, while addressing a large crowd of students and civil society groups, also said that he would forward all the files containing alleged fraud to Abuja, next week, for prosecution.

The civil society members and students marched through major roads in the city, chanting anti-Peoples Democratic Party songs and accusing the opposition party of sponsoring Monday’s anti-government protest.

Efforts by our correspondent to reach Chief Igbinedion or the then Secretary to the State Government, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, on the allegations were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.

Oshiomhole accused the former governor and his father, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, of allegedly converting to private use, government properties and funds meant for the people of the state.

He also added that he was ready to publish the sales of government properties during Igbinedion’s administration, stressing that the move would reveal the identities of other beneficiaries.

Noting that he would want to be remembered for eliminating the concept of ‘godfatherism’ in Edo politics, Oshiomhole commended the youths and civil society groups for their solidarity for his government.

He explained that his feud with the Igbiendion family started when he revoked the over 200,000 hectares of government land which the former governor allegedly gave to his father in Okada as well as the termination of the Memorandum of Understanding the former governor allegedly signed with his father to allow “the medical students in Igbinedion University to use our state-owned hospital at the expense of the Edo State Government while Chief Igbinedion collects N1m from each medical student.”

The governor said, “Everybody born of a woman in this state must be subjected to the rule of law. I decree in the name of God, my creator, and in the interest of Edo people, even the ones yet unborn, I want to be remembered after my stewardship, not only for roads, for hospitals, for schools (but) much more importantly, I want to be remembered as the man who brought an end to exemptions.

“We provided the leadership that has banished the godfathers in Edo State. They can never, never forget that. I will publish records in black and white and Edo people will be told how they have been raped; they have murdered sleep. I went to Ovia North-East, Igbinedion covered all the government reserved land reserved for the people of Edo State.

“Lucky gave to his father over 200,000 hectares of land. They took the land on the grounds that they will use it for mechanised farming, I will say the truth and Igbinedion can do nothing; I can drive him out of town.”

“The angrier they are, the happier I am. With the powers vested in me as the governor, I used the powers to revoke the over 200,000 hectares of land the son gave to the father and returned it to government. That was why Igbinedion was fighting me; but I said (that) if he does not obey the law, he will go to prison. They were able to cover these things (but) Buhari is there now. So, it can never be business as usual.”

Misconduct: Erring Lawyers May Lose Practising Licence – NBA

Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) president, Augustine Alegeh, SAN, has reiterated the commitment of the association not to tolerate any act of professional misconduct from any of its members, stressing that erring lawyers depending on gravity of offence may lose their practising licence.

He said the decision to harp on professionalism has become imperative to rid the bar of all forms of quackery and ensure that only qualified lawyers are in the practice.

The NBA president who stated this shortly after inaugurating the Barnawa branch of the association in Kaduna, also disclosed that no fewer than 1000 fake lawyers have so far been discovered in the profession, adding that the number is still increasing.

He assured however that the association was not going to leave any stone unturned to get rid of quacks in the law profession, stressing that all lawyers enrolled have their stamp.

“Any fake or quack lawyer apprehended will be handed over to the law enforcement agency for necessary prosecution.

“NBA will deal decisively with any lawyer who misbehaves.

All erring members of NBA will severely be punished, with punishment ranging from 2-5 years ban out of practice and in the case of a more grievous offence, such lawyer might loose his or her practising licence.”

Research shows higher rate of happiness among non-users of Facebook

Logging off from Facebook can contribute to more happiness, according to a Danish study on users of the social networking site.

The findings were based on a week-long survey of 1,095 Facebook users, who were divided into two groups, Meik Wiking, chief executive of The Happines Research Institute said on Wednesday.

“One half would continue to use Facebook as normal, that was our control group, and the other half were asked not to log on to Facebook for a week,” he told newsmen.

A week later, the two groups were assessed again and there was an increase in the average happiness rating among those who took a break from Facebook.

On a 10-point scale, their average increased 0.5 points – rising from 7.56 to 8.12 points, while the group that continued to use Facebook showed only a marginal change, the report said.

“The finding, I was most surprised about was how much life satisfaction increased in our treatment group, the people who had a break from Facebook,” Wiking said.

The researchers had not been sure they would be able to detect any effect at all in such a short period of a week, he added.

The group, who had a break from Facebook were also less stressed, more decisive and felt “more present in the moment,” the report said.

The survey was conducted at the end of October, and comprised Danish Facebook users, aged from 17 to their 70s.

“Ironically, we recruited people via Facebook,” Wiking said.

About 10-15 per cent of the users in the group that took a break, conceded after the survey was completed that they had actually logged on to Facebook.

Wiking, who signed up as well and was randomly put in the treatment group, said he was forced to drop out as he had to check an address to a party that was posted on Facebook.

He said the think tank plans a follow-up, including tracking the groups to see if there was a long-term effect and if users would return to previous Facebook behaviour.

The research was titled The Facebook Experiment: Does Social Media Affect the Quality of our Lives.

Christian Daycare Workers Fired After Refusing To Call Transgender 6-Year-Old By A Boy’s Name

Two daycare workers are suing on the basis of discrimination, alleging that they were fired due to their Christian faith after refusing to recognize a transgender child’s new identity.
MailOnline: Two Christian childcare workers who were fired after refusing to call a transgender six year old by a boy’s name are suing the center for discrimination.

Madeline Kirksey and Akesha Bogany Wyatt were sacked from the Children’s Lighthouse Learning Center in Katy, Texas, a week ago after the pupil, who had attended school for four months as a girl, began identifying as a boy.
According to Adam Taylor, Kirksey’s lawyer, the child’s parents – both of whom are male – took their daughter home on a Friday, and sent her back to school the following Monday as a boy.

Taylor says the child’s hair had been cut into a masculine style, and the formerly female student had been given a more classically masculine name.

However, Kirksey and Wyatt refused to go along with the name change, and said they felt uncomfortable speaking to other young children about transgender issues.

Kirksey also apparently feels that the child’s gay parents are pushing their daughter into being transgender:
Kirksey added that she feels the male parents of the student are forcing the issue of gender on to their child, which she disagrees with.

Taylor said: ‘Madeline’s rights have been violated. Literally she was sacrificed on the alter of political correctness.
“It is not just Madeline and it is not just this school that we are concerned about. We need to send a strong message that Christians need to push back on this agenda.”

We understand people holding on to their own set of beliefs…but is it really this teacher’s place to grandstand on this child’s struggle? On the other hand, it doesn’t seem necessary to fire her for being uncooperative…surely the child could have been moved to another class.

Cop too drunk to accept award for arresting 100 drunk drivers

When Florida cop Michael Szeliga heard he was going to win an award for arresting 100 drunk drivers, he probably should't have packed a bottle of Jameson in his patrol car.

According to Raw Story, Szeliga was being honoured by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) for his impressive arrest record - but he was too drunk to accept the award.

“It was wrong, and again, one of the most ridiculous things I’ve heard of. When I first heard about it, that was (what) my reaction was. ‘Come on, you’ve got to be kidding me. Really?’” Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri told Raw Story.

The award ceremony was part of a DUI training weekend hosted by MADD.

According to WFLA News Channel 8 on the first day of the weekend, Szeliga had apparently skipped out on training and gone drinking with a pair of other officers. He was found later that day "wasted" and wearing nothing but his boxer shorts.

While he was suspended for the incident, it didn't result in him missing out on his promotion to detective.

According to Raw Story, MADD has a history of bad experiences with booze - last year their acting chapter president, David Griffin, was arrested for drunk driving. Griffin has since resigned.

PHOTO: Five-year-old girl accuses father’s friends of rape

A five-year-old girl has accused five of her father’s colleagues of rape. The victim, it was learnt, was allegedly raped alongside her three-year-old sister.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the victims and their father, Ayodele Ekundayo, who is a driver at a cement factory, lived in the same compound with the suspects who all work in the same company.

It was learnt that the company, which is located in the Fagba area of Lagos State, provided accommodation for its employees.
It was learnt that the suspects – John Mahansi, Taiye Ojo, aka Ejima, Deji Adenekan, aka Orobo and Peter Irobo, aka Apako, are between the ages of 24 and 33.

Speaking at the Lagos headquarters of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the father of the victims said he was disappointed when he found out that his colleagues raped his daughters. He said since he had no wife, he usually left the little girls in the care of his colleagues.
Ekundayo said he discovered the alleged rape when his daughters started complaining about pains in their private parts.

He said,
“Five days ago (on Thursday), my younger daughter ran to me and was shouting ‘pepper, pepper’ pointing to her private parts. She took off her pants and cried when I did not answer her. When I asked her who put pepper in it, she said it was Apako.
“I called her elder sister and she confessed to me and narrated all that happened. She said they (the suspects) threatened to kill them if they told me what was going on.

“Others did not talk when I approached them but Apako was shouting and threatening me when I challenged him. I am surprised they could do such a thing to my daughters. Those children are precious to me.
“At times, I take them with me to where we offload bags of cement when there is nobody to look after them. My older daughter told me that two drivers, Ejima and Orobo, used to touch her private parts while I was busy at work. I left my daughters with the security guards, Mahansi and Segun, whenever I was on night duty. I didn’t know that they were also defiling my daughters.”

The suspects, who were paraded by the NSCDC, however, denied the allegations.
The five-year-old victim, however, told PUNCH Metro that she was indeed raped by the suspects.
The victim, who gave graphic details of her encounter, said one of the suspects instructed her to put his private parts in her mouth.

She said,
“Yes. Apako, John, Segun, Orobo and Ejima raped me. They put their ‘willy’ in my ‘bum-bum’ two times. They kissed me. It was only Apako that put his ‘willy’ in my sister’s ‘bum-bum.’”
A resident of Fagba, identified only as Dr. Solanke, was said to have informed a rights group, Ihuoma Girls Care and Support Initiative, about the incident and it later reported at the NSCDC command, leading to the suspects’ arrest on Monday.

Blows, slap as Dogara, Gbajabiamila’s supporters fight over House c’ttees

                            Dogara and Gbajabiamila

The exchange of blows caused the legislators to defer sitting and resort to caucuses during which a resolution was taken by the mainstream of the House to bring sanctions on House Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila and his 23 loyalists who boycotted Monday’s inauguration of the House Committees.

That decision was, however, tempered following pleas at a closed door session between Gbajabiamila and some principal officers of the House in the speaker’s office.

Also yesterday in the Senate, muttering over the sharing of committee positions again reopened the fault lines as supporters of the Senate Presidency bid of Senator Ahmad Lawan accused Senate President Bukola Saraki of surrendering the chambers to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The melee in the House was upon the bad blood that followed the boycott of the inauguration of the 96 standing committees by House Leader, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila, and his close loyalists.

Exchange of blows

It was gathered that trouble started when the newly inaugurated Chairman of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Rep Herman Hembe, representing APC, Konshisha/Vandekiya, Benue State, a close loyalist of the speaker, engaged Rep. Magaji Aliyu, APC, Birnin-Kudu/Buji, Jigawa State, a supporter of Gbajabiamila, over the sharing of the committees.

A slap was said to have followed when one of the two men could no longer control his emotion and the situation was said to have been quickly brought under control by the intervention of the Deputy Speaker, Yussuff Lasun.

Tempers also overflowed on account of alleged moves by allies of Speaker Yakubu Dogara and those of Gbajabiamila to effect sanctions upon the other.

At the closed door session of the APC caucus, it was gathered that members resolved to remove Gbajabiamila as House Leader and refer his 23 loyalists who boycotted the Monday inauguration of the committees to the Privileges Committee of the House.

That move was, however, rescinded after a peace meeting between Gbajabiamila and the speaker attended by some principal officers of the House.

Sources privy to the development said Gbajabiamila had entered the speaker’s office and requested for a one-on-one meeting with the speaker but the other principal officers present were said to have refused and insisted on partaking in the meeting.

Among the principal officers present at the meeting were Deputy Speaker, Yusuf Lashun; Minority Leader, Leo Ogor and Chief Whip, Ado Doguwa.

At the end of the interaction, the speaker was said to have promised to prevail on his supporters not to apply the sanctions as canvassed by the mainstream of the House against Gbajabiamila and his loyalists.

Gbajabiamila in an SMS response to Vanguard on the development said last night:“The Speaker and I, both know we will both look bad and no one will be the winner if there is ever another fight on the floor. The numbers are simply not there to remove any principal officer.”

It was a meeting

for APC family

Doguwa who briefed newsmen on the outcome of the APC caucus meeting said yesterday: “This was a meeting for the APC family, a meeting we intended to address ourselves that enough is enough of the misunderstanding among the APC family.

“I want to tell you precisely that by what we did yesterday, the flight of the 8th House of Representatives has taken off, it has not only taken off, it has taken off very successfully and it is a flight that is a four-year bound air flight, with Dogara as the pilot.

“I want to tell that we have maintained the status quo for now and Femi (Gbajabiamila) is our leader in the House of Representatives and even the speculations made earlier on that there is a move to remove Femi as our leader is unfounded and it is not from the leadership of the House or the APC.

“I also want to tell you that this morning I had a very close consultations with the leaders of the party, specifically Senator Lawali Shuaibu, who is the deputy leader of the APC in Nigeria and we have told them that there is no cause for alarm in the House of Representatives and we are moving as one.

“There is no two way about unity, this party was founded on the basis of unity and the House of Representatives as it is today is very much poised and ready to work with Mr. President, Muhammadu Buhari, to deliver the change mantra we have promised Nigerians.”

Gbajabiamila camp denies plot to remove Dogara

Associates of Gbajabiamila were also quick to denounce alleged plots against Speaker Dogara, particularly an alleged meeting in Atlanta, United States of America.

“No such meeting was held in the US. Rather, the leader (Gbajabiamila) visited Brazil where he met his family. I repeat there is no plan to remove Dogara by Gbajabiamila men,” an associate of Dogara said yesterday.

“It was a concoction of Dogara’s men to get juicy committees. They have built a garrison around Dogara that only those close to him can advise him. In short, they have caged him.

However, a member of the House, Rep Mustapha Bala Dawaki, has denounced agitations for committee positions, saying that committee chairmanship is a privilege and not the right of any lawmaker.

He said “the primary responsibility of any lawmaker here in the 8th Assembly is to adequately represent his constituency not committee chairmanship.”

Dawaki, who represents Dawakin Kudu/Warawa, APC, Kano, described the move as in bad taste “as no lawmaker was elected by his people to come here to fight for committee chairmanship or the so-called elusive juicy committees.”

Saraki asked to apologise to Nigerians

Meanwhile, anger among loyalists of Senator Lawan in the Senate over the composition of the committees also boiled over at a press conference in the Senate building, yesterday.

Speaking under the aegis of Senate Unity Forum, spokesman of the group, Senator Kabiru Marafa, APC, Zamfara Central, however, shied away from saying any member of his group would resign from the committee positions assigned to him.

Affirming that tyranny had taken over the Senate, he urged Senate President Saraki to apologise to Nigerians for “abuse of the Constitution” and for increasing number of committees beyond the statutory provisions.

Trouble started shortly after Votes and Proceedings of the last Wednesday’s sitting was approved by the Senate. Senator Marafa, who cited a number of Constitutional Orders and the Senate Standing Order submitted that the constitution of the committees should be reversed as they failed to meet the benchmark.

According to Senator Marafa, the Senate Selection Committee chaired by the Senate President, was not duly constituted, in accordance with provisions of the Standing Order, saying as such, the committees they put together were null and void.

He also asserted that failure of the Senate President to comply with Section 100 of the Senate Standing Rules, which provides for Senate approval of the committees before they can go into operation, saying such development had also nullified the efforts of the Senate Selection Committee.

He insisted that the committees were not subject to the approval of all senators in plenary. He said that the Selection Committee was not properly constituted in that it was made up mainly of new senators, flouting the standing order, which specified that it should be constituted based on ranking.

Legislative tyranny

Hear him: “What we are witnessing today in the National Assembly and the Senate in particular is legislative tyranny, where impunity wants to be the order of the day.

“Laws are meant to be respected and if we can treat our Order with impunity, then we have no business being here.

“There is no committee. They are not legally constituted and they cannot function. Any further action is unacceptable to Nigerians and I have discharged that responsibility.”

Speaking in the same vein, Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi, APC, Kaduna North, said there were procedures for constituting standing committees.

Hunkuyi, who was appointed Vice Chairman, Federal Character Commission and Inter-Governmental Affairs, said there was no resolution on the committees at plenary.

But reacting to the allegations, Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, Abdullahi Sabi, said the committees were approved during the adoption of votes and proceedings.

According to him, no lawmaker had the power to declare any proceeding in the House null and void because they were not judges.

Beware, dirty notes can make you ill!

When next you handle a dirty currency, try and smell it. You’ll be surprised at how irritating to the nose it could be!

We are talking about any currency here, and not just the naira. However, because the majority of us only have access to our legal tender, we might as well focus on the naira.

The way the local sellers, especially the market women, handle the naira notes range from bizarre to the ridiculous.

Have you ever been handed money that was drawn directly out of the brassieres? Say, how does it feel holding money that has been soaked in someone’s sweat?

What about butchers who habitually smear money with blood of animals? Give them a neat note and right in your presence, they will smear it with blood, sending the pollution course in motion immediately.

As for bus conductors, if the naira could talk, it would cry foul each time those uncouth commercial bus conductors and the drivers use it to wipe sweat or clean dirty nose!

To some people, the naira note comes handy for picking ears. They simply roll it up and use the sharp edge to draw out ear wax.

And, what about people who lick their fingers repeatedly just to be able to separate the notes as they count money!

How often do you come across badly soiled naira, even when you withdraw money from the ATM? Usually, what comes out of the ATM are limp, torn and smelly notes that should have been withdrawn from circulation ages ago!

Yet, apart from the national shame that we feel each time we come across these badly handled notes, physicians are saying that dirty currencies are fully of germs that readily transit from hand to hand, such that no one could escape getting infected once you handle the money.

Germs and pathogens on money

When a child is playing with money, the average adult is only concerned about the money not getting lost. We hardly think of the possible ill health that could result from having an encounter with soiled notes!

Yet, unlike other commodities that could be neglected if found lying carelessly on the floor, the average person would pick up money, even if it perches atop a mound of poop! And when such money lands in your palm, you have no way of knowing how far it has travelled before it gets to you.

As such, it is dangerous to get careless with money by using your lips to hold it, for instance, while searching for something in your bag; or by allowing a child to play with money unsupervised.

A virologist with the Ministry of Health, Dr. Tolu Samuel, says the way the naira is treated leaves no one in doubt that each note carries thousands of several types of bacteria on its surface.

She says that without any fear of contradiction, the common bacteria that are likely to be found on dirty notes include the types that will be found in the mouth, bum and poop.

Elaborating further, the scientist says the act of licking the fingers when counting money introduces microbes that reside in the mouth; while those who don’t clean their hands properly after each bathroom use are responsible for the bacteria that are traceable to the private parts and poop.

She adds that though many viruses and bacteria cannot survive on any surface — including money surface — for more than 48 hours, live flu virus can survive on paper money for up to 17 days!

She says this is because, even without playing dirty with a currency, the human hands are colonised by millions of bacteria; and because money exchanges hands frequently, it is easy to pass pathogens around as money exchanges hands!

She counsels, “While scientists are not able to categorically say how much money aids in the transmission of disease-causing bacteria, common sense dictates that you should wash your hands after handling money, just the way you do after using the bathroom.”

Samuel warns that with the way some naira notes are heavily soiled, she wouldn’t be surprised to find multi-drug resistant pathogens on any of them if taken to the laboratory for analysis.

“What this suggests is that the population is exposed to the risk of not having effective prevention and treatment of a range of infections caused by bacteria, parasites, viruses and fungi,” Samuel warns.

Indeed, scientists warn that patients who have infections that are caused by drug-resistant bacteria are generally at increased risk of worse clinical outcomes, including death!

Have you ever taken ill after eating out, even in a swanky restaurant? It happens quite frequently and we sometimes think it’s because we developed sensitivity to the food.

Well, may be; as researchers warn that those who prepare food after handling contaminated currency notes have a higher risk of infecting themselves and others with food-borne pathogens such as shigella and salmonella.

Samuel says when you contact either salmonella or shigella, it can lead to abdominal cramps, bloody diarrhoea and fever, which will require medical attention without delay.

“What this translates into is that those who handle food must be careful to wash their hands after handling money. Otherwise, they may transfer disease pathogens that are on the surface of money into food. The situation is worse when that food wouldn’t need to be cooked before eating,” the virologist says.

The bottom line: Wash your hands frequently.
