Chelsea players fully behind Mourinho –Mikel

Mikel Obi says Chelsea players remain convinced Jose Mourinho is the ideal manager for the club.

Mourinho has endured a dismal start to the season, with the Premier League champions currently 15th, with 11 points from 11 games, after Saturday’s 3-1 home defeat to Liverpool.

Sources have told ESPN FC that Mourinho has two games to save his job, and that former Blues coach Carlo Ancelotti would be interested in taking over even on a temporary basis if the Portuguese is dismissed.

There have been questions about some players’ commitment, and the presenter of BBC Radio 5 Live’s “Sportsweek” programme reported at the weekend that he had been told that one first-team Chelsea player had recently said, “I’d rather lose than win for him.”

However, Mikel, who started both the Capital One Cup loss to Stoke and the Liverpool defeat, said the players retain full support for the former Inter Milan and Real Madrid boss.

“We are right behind the manager,” he told reporters. “There’s no doubt about it. In training we work very hard. If anyone can turn this around, we definitely think he’s the one.

“Last year we were champions. We won two trophies. Jose knows this club more than any other manager. He’s the most successful manager in the club’s history.

“I definitely think that, if anything is wrong, if anything can be fixed, he is the one. There’s no one out there that is going to come in and fix what’s going on.”

Metallic poisoning, not Ebola killed UNICAL student–FG

The Federal Government has given a clue to what might have killed a 21-year-old male student of the University of Calabar, who was suspected to have died of Ebola Virus Disease. It said the deceased died of “metallic poisoning.”

The government specifically said that it came out with that verdict after it received the result of confirmation test on the cause of the deceased death.

The Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Health, Mr. Linus Awute, made the clarification in Abuja during an interview with The PUNCH.

According to him, what killed the student had to do with the management of his “lifestyle in terms of what he ate or what he took, which happens now and then.”

Our correspondent reported that the patient was diagnosed with a suspected case of hemorrhagic fever on October 7, 2015.

The government had notified the nation that preliminary tests carried out on the blood samples of the patient confirmed that the deceased was negative to both the Ebola virus and the Lassa fever virus.

About three weeks ago, government had also stated that additional tests, using next generation sequencing methods, were going to be carried out at the Redeemers University African Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases at Ede, Osun State, to confirm which virus must have caused the infection and the subsequent death of the UNICAL student.

But Awute insisted that the UNICAL student died of “metallic poisoning” and not Ebola Virus Disease.

He said, “There is a test confirmation that it is not Ebola. It has also been confirmed that issues like that used to come up. We are sensitive to issues like that, because of the Ebola experience. It is also clear and obvious to us that there was nobody who touched him or who was around him that got infected. And so, it can’t be an infectious disease.

“It is traceable to a kind of poison which is classified as metallic poisoning. The UNICAL student was a victim of metallic poisoning; but nobody can actually say how it happened. The most important thing for us is that we have exempted the danger of infecting another person, which means it is not any known infectious disease.

“It is not Ebola and cannot be associated with any infectious disease because all the public health protocols required in ascertaining that it is not Ebola and it is not any hemorrhagic fever has been done. The number of days for which it can infect another person or any other person around him to show similar symptoms has also been exceeded.

“So, one can comfortably conclude that it is not Ebola; it is not any other infectious disease. It has to do with the management of the person’s lifestyle in terms of what he ate or what he drank. It is just that in this era when we have to be vigilant about infectious diseases, you don’t see such things and take it for granted. So, that is why we had to respond in the way and manner that is expected of us as the custodian of the health system of Nigeria.”

In its earlier test, the government claimed that initial findings by the laboratory necessitated additional tests, leading to a delay in the release of the result.

“The result of these tests is now out and I wish to inform the nation that the blood sample from the patient tested negative to all pathogenic viruses known to man. Further tests were conducted to establish any bacterial or fungal infection involvement and this also proved negative. The possibility of poisoning or intoxication with a chemical cannot be ruled out at this stage. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control will continue with this investigation in collaboration with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control,” Awute said.

Okorocha: Igbo won’t negotiate on MASSOB platform

•‘Pro-Jonathan forces behind fresh Biafra agitation’

Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha has said the Igbo will not use the platform of any separatist group, including the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), to pursue the Igbo agenda.

Okorocha, who distanced Southeast governors and leaders from the pro-Biafra groups, said the zone did not need an armed struggle associated with militia groups to attract economic and infrastructural development.

The governor, who spoke at a breakfast meeting with reporters, noted that the zone’s setbacks could not be addressed by antagonising the North and West, but by mutual cooperation and support for the All Progressives Congress-led (APC) Federal Government.

His words: “The Igbo will not use the agitation for Biafra as a platform to negotiate the place of Ndigbo, but will support the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to attract the dividends of democracy that eluded us in the past.

“We should try to jettison religious sentiments and support President Buhari. The Igbo will not use Biafra as a front; we condemn those agitating for Biafra because that is not Ndigbo’s need”.

But the senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has said agitation for Biafra is a plan ‘B’ action promoted by pro-Jonathan forces to undermine President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

Sani, who spoke during an interaction with reporters in Kaduna yesterday, said: “The new agitation for Biafra is a misguided, ill-conceived and ill-fated course.

“The Biafra agitation is a new attempt to destroy the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, to ignite a national conflict and cause chaos, pandemonium and confusion. It is not reflective of the interest and generality of the Igbo people.”

The senator said the Igbo had made progress since the civil war, adding that their future was better guaranteed and sustained within a united Nigeria.

Sani said: “Those attempting to wake up the Biafran course are of three categories. The first are young men with no knowledge of the tragedy, suffering and hardship Nigerians endured during the Civil War. The second category are desperate forces hiding behind the Biafran agitation to undermine our national unity and destroy theMuhammadu Buhari’s administration.

“And the third group are simply warmongers, who want crisis in an era of peace and progress. So, I will say this in clear terms: Nigeria is an indivisible entity and we have since gone beyond the Civil War.”

The people of the Southeast, Sani said, had the right within the ambit of the constitution to demand to be recognised and respected as equal partners in the Nigerian project.

He cautioned that their agitation must, however, be within the ambit of respect for the indivisibility of Nigeria and the constitution.

”As long as we realise the change agenda, entrench good governance and run an all-inclusive government, the Biafran agitation will naturally fizzle out.

“Nigerians must be patient with the President Buhari’s administration. It is wrong for people to accuse him of not performing, taking cognisance of the rot in the last 16 years.

“We have no reason to give excuses and lament the problems of Nigeria when Nigerians are desirous of change and progress,” Sani said.

Boko Haram: FG To Build 10,000 Homes For IDPs In Adamawa

As part of its plans to rehabilitate communities destroyed by the Boko Haram insurgency, the federal government will build about 10,000 houses for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Adamawa State.

The vice chairman of the committee constituted by the federal government to superintend the reconstruction of the region, North East Housing Reconstruction Initiative, Hajiya Hadiza Muhammed, disclosed this yesterday.

He said the committee had already visited all the local governments affected by the insurgency in the state and had documented the houses destroyed by the insurgents, noting that the committee would soon make their presentations to the president for his approval and commencement of the project.

“We are going to build no fewer than 10, 000 houses in Adamawa.

“With the work given to me to go round all the local governments to do documentaries of houses destroyed; that one has been done and we will make presentations to the president and, very soon, we will start reconstructing the region,” she said.

According to her, the decision to build 300 housing estates in Adamawa, tagged Bindow Housing Estate, is part of her contributions to the development of the state and for all her successes in the property development sector, even as she called on wealthy natives of the state to cultivate the habit of investing at home.

Muhammad explained that 1.7 million people in the state would benefit from the project in terms of employment and youth empowerment while 300 families will also benefit as owners of the estates when completed.

Telecoms: IT expert says rain does not affect quality of service

                                                                               Telecoms mast

An Information Technology (IT) expert, Mr Lanre Ajayi, on Monday asserted that rainy weather does not affect the Quality of Service (QoS) rendered by the telecommunications operators.

Ajayi, who is the President of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that it had not been scientifically proven that rain affected network operations.

He said rain did not affect QoS because of the technology used for telecoms transmission.

According to the ATCON president, telecoms operators use terrestial technology to transmit their services, which makes it unsusceptible to rain.

“Rain affects transmission when you transmit by satellite from the KU-band, but most transmissions by the GSM companies now is not carried by satellite.

“And the ones that are transmitted via satellite are usually not by the KU-band. So it may be incorrect to say that rain directly affects the QoS.

“Most of them are on fibre and rain is not meant to affect transmission on fibre,’’ he added.

The IT expert noted that problems of poor services were as a result of factors other than rainy weather.

“Some of these things could be perception, but I cannot completely dismiss it because rain comes with a lot of its own hazards.

“Thunder can strike and damage equipment; wind can blow and bring down towers. If the base stations are damaged, there won’t be network.

”So apart from the regular hazards that come with rainfall, I don’t think rain is a big problem,’’ he stressed.

Ajayi explained further that rain affected network services when the operators used copper cables, which were usually buried underground.

“It is an easy thing to explain because once water soaks those cables, interference will be experienced,’’ the ATCON President added.

Police accused of torturing 25yr old father of 2 to death in Sokoto

Daily Trust reports that the 25 year old father of two was on an errand for his sister when he met with the police officers on the road and made a comment about checkpoints that have been banned by President Buhari and the illegality in the one erected by the officers. This angered the police officers who trailed the vehicle he was commuting with.

Narrating what happened, Bashar Nahantsi, a friend of the deceased,
said after the deceased made the comment that angered the police, they trailed the vehicle in which they were commuting in and ordered the driver to stop.
“The policemen ordered the two of us to come out of the vehicle, claiming that they suspected us of drug abuse. We came down and they arrested us, but my late friend freed himself from their grip and ran away, leaving me with them. They stripped me and tied my hands from behind, using my vest. They asked if I had anyone who could stand for me. I said yes and called one of my elders. They did not see him, but they said I should not worry. They tied my hands and feet.

Later, my friend who ran away came back. I was put under the custody of two mobile policemen under a tree. They asked me to lie low in the grass so they could arrest my friend. They arrested him, but he later escaped into a farm. He was chased by the two mobile policemen.
By then, they had come back with my friend in an unconscious state and dumped him on the ground. At that time, he could not even sit properly. I had to support him with my feet before he could sit down.
After collecting N1, 500, they ordered that I should carry my friend to where we could get a vehicle home. When I realised the condition they had subjected my friend to, I told them I couldn’t do anything.
I managed to get away from them. It was two days after the encounter, while I was at a village that I got to know of my friend’s death. The police killed him.”he said.

Also speaking, father of the deceased, Alhaji Shehu said “I was at Birnin Gwani when the incident happened on Sunday. I came back home on Tuesday to find out that my house was filled with people. Upon enquiry I was told that my son Yahaya had died. I asked if he was sick and the people told me that it was policemen who killed him at Teke market.”.

He said that those who washed and dressed his son’s lifeless body testified that his neck was fractured and that he had bruises on it as though he was strangled.
“I have left everything to Allah, but I demand that justice be done,” he said.
Confirming the incident, the Sokoto state commissioner of Police, Salisu Fagge, said five policemen have been arrested in connection with the incident while investigation is ongoing.

“The deceased’s parents alleged that the police had killed their son at a certain town. We investigated and arrested the policemen who were alleged to have carried out the assault. We called witnesses who testified to us. We will penalise any offender, whoever he is, whether police or civilian. Whoever commits any wrong must be brought to order. The law must take its course. No one should be above the law. There are procedures to be followed before the suspects are taken to court. We have to follow due process.”he said

How Buhari’s TSA Saved Nigeria Billions Of Naira

Already, President Muhammadu Buhari’s resolve to rid Nigeria of corruptive elements is fast yielding results as billions of naira are being saved in the process.

Shortly after his inauguration, President Buhari ordered every Federal Government Ministry, Department and Agencies to start paying into a Treasury Single Account (TSA) for all government revenues, incomes and other receipts.

The Daily Times gathered that through the implementation of the TSA, a whopping N8 billion was uncovered in a single account in an old generation bank. The said amount is said to be operated in the name of a defence operation account.

A text message to the Group Head, Marketing and Corporate Communications of the bank, to authenticate the story, was not responded to as at press time. Similarly, Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, did not also respond to a text message sent to him to speak on the alleged uncovering of the amount in the bank as at press time.

Col. Rabe Abubakar, Acting Director of Defence Information was also contacted through a text message but failed to respond to it as at press time.

It would be recalled that President Buhari had earlier promised state governors at the inaugural meeting of the National Economic Council, NEC, in June, that all revenues prescribed for lodgement into the federation account will be treated as such under his watch and that he will ensure strict compliance with all relevant laws on accounting, allocation and disbursement.

Since then, the Presidency has worked with relevant agencies of the Federal Government to evolve this policy directive.

This directive applies to fully funded organs of government like the Ministries, Departments, Agencies and Foreign Missions, as well as the partially funded ones, like Teaching Hospitals, Medical Centres, Federal Tertiary Institutions, etc.

Agencies like the CBN, SEC, CAC, NPA, NCC, FAAN, NCAA, NIMASA, NDIC, NSC, NNPC, FIRS, NCS, MMSD, DPR are also affected.

For any agency that is fully or partially self-funding, Sub-Accounts linked to TSA are to be maintained at CBN and the accounting system will be configured to allow them access to funds based on their approved budgetary provisions.

A 16-year-old boy, Nwanga Chidiebere, is battling to stay alive at Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State (FETHA) . Chidiebere, a male servant, was allegedly attacked with hot water by a female doctor at FETHA, Jane-Glad Ugba.

Chidiebere is hospitalised at the Plastic Surgery Department of the hospital following the attack. Recounting his ordeal to a National Telegraph correspondent on his hospital bed, Chidiebere explained that he had just returned from school on the fateful day and was about washing clothes when his boss asked him to go and boil yam which her children would eat.

He said while the yam was on the stove, he decided to start to wash the clothes, with plans to check it from time to time. According to him, while he was still washing, Ugba asked her eldest son to go and wash the plates. Chidiebere disclosed that the boy left the door open while he went to clean the lines on which he would spread the clothes.

The JSS 3 student of Presco Secondary School, Abakaliki, said while he was cleaning the lines, his boss started yelling that he left the door open. He said:

“I told her that I was not the one that left the door open but her son. While she was still scolding me, her husband came out and asked me to lie down despite my plea that I was not the one who opened the door and I immediately lied down.’’ Chidiebere explained that as he was still lying down, the woman walked to the pot and started yelling that he left the yam to get burnt. He added:
“In anger, she grabbed the pot and emptied the whole hot content on my back and it injured me seriously. “The pain was so much that I ran outside where I almost cried out myeyeballs from their sockets. She then asked me to go and clean where I washed clothes and after that I should pack my things and leave her house that she did not want to live with me again.”

The victim said he went to see the sister of his ‘Oga’ (Mr Ugba) who, after seeing his burnt skin, called her brother. According to him, Mr Ugba asked him to come back home but before he got home, they had already locked the gate. He maintained that he had to sleep in a Skeletal Assemblies of God Church site around Goddy Ogbaga Avenue until the next morning when he went back to his madam and found out that the gate was still locked. With nowhere to go, Chidiebere said he roaming about when a female member of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) accosted him and asked him why he was loitering about.

According to him, the NSCDC official threatened to arrest him before she noticed the burns on his face and asked him what happened. He said after his explanation, the officer took him to the hospital. Chidiebere added that his ‘madam’ did not know his whereabouts until she came to work and saw him on admission.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP George Onuorah, confirmed the incident. Onuorah disclosed that Ugba had been arrested and arraigned in court.

Secular Publisher Hacked To Death In Bangladesh

A publisher of a slain online critic of religious militancy was hacked to death in the Bangladeshi capital, police said, hours after similar attacks wounded two secular writers and another publisher.

Faysal Arefin, who was killed on Saturday in Dhaka, published books by Avijit Roy, a US citizen of Bangladeshi origin who was murdered in the same way in February.

The body of Arefin, the 43-year-old chief of the Jagriti Prokashoni publishing house, was found inside his office. The perpetrators had locked the office before carrying out the attack, police said.

Arefin's father, Abul Kashem Fazlul Haq, a noted intellectual and writer, said: "I rushed to his office at Aziz Market and broke the padlock, and I saw him lying upside down in a massive pool of blood. They slaughtered his neck. He is dead."

Jamaluddin Mir, a police officer, told Al Jazeera that at least seven other people were trapped inside the office when the attack was carried out.

"The criminals introduced themselves as customers who were buying books and entered the publishing house," he said, adding that an investigation to identify the attackers was under way. See another photo below.

FG owes road contractors N300bn – Reps

Nigerians may face rougher times travelling on the country’s highways in 2016 as the House of Representatives Committee on Works said on Sunday that debts owed road contractors by the Federal Government still stood at over N300bn.

The committee noted that it was not surprising that many contractors had either abandoned their sites or were slowing down their pace, awaiting funding from the government.

The chairman of the committee, Mr. Toby Okechukwu, who stated this in Abuja, said funding remained the biggest challenge the road sector would face next year.

Okechukwu suggested that the situation called for both the government and the contractors to review their roles in the road projects.

He said, “We are talking about debts on road projects in excess of N300bn. The first challenge will be the funding of road infrastructure. Money owed road contractors should be looked into in terms of what did government owe and how did contractors perform or did not perform?”

In the 2015 budget, the government allocated what lawmakers described as “paltry” N11bn to the road sector.

The figure was said to make little impact in settling outstanding debts, let alone addressing the funding of new or running projects.

With dwindling returns from crude oil sales and less money at the disposal of the government, Okechukwu observed that government alone could no longer afford the required funding for road projects.

He said the situation called for a “review of the laws guiding road infrastructure” to increase private-sector participation in road projects.

“We should take a serious look at the issue of Public Private Partnership. In doing this, it should not be politically-influenced.

“PPP is a business idea that will be profitable to the investors. So, it is not likely that they will allow it to fail,” the lawmaker added.

Okechukwu stated that to make the situation worse for the road sector, there was no information on the 2016 budget with less than two months to the end of the current year.

For instance, he said the Medium Term Expenditure Framework expected to be at the National Assembly since September had yet to reach the legislature.

“This implies that the operation of the budget as it relates to the road sector will be affected.

“This will tragic for us, looking at how bad our roads are today,” he said.

Okechukwu also spoke on assets seized by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in the course of investigations into corruption cases.

Rather than keep the “perishable assets” to waste or lose value, he suggested that they could be sold and the proceeds kept in deposit banks.

“Government can also re-invest the money in profitable ventures instead of keeping such assets to waste or lose value while the cases are stalled in courts for years”, Okechukwu said.

Eaglets pummel Brazil to qualify for semi final

Defending champions, the Golden Eaglets of Nigeria cruised into the FIFA U-17 World Cup semi-finals after stunning Brazil with three goals in first half.

Victor Osimhen, with his eighth goal in five games, Kingsley Michael and Udochukwu Anumudu battered Brazil.

The Eaglets played the rest of the game out at a canter to reach the final four.

The coach Emmanuel Amuneke-led Eaglets side will now meet the winner of today’s quarter-final between Ecuador and Mexico in the semi finals on Thursday.

The sour point for the Nigerian team was the yellow card to enterprising forward Funsho Bamgboye in the second half, which effectively ruled him out of the semi final tie.

Bamgboye, who got a red card in the team’s second group game against Chile was already on a yellow card he got in the second round match against Australia.

The Samba Boys were brighter in the opening stages, either finding Akpan Udoh in fine form in the Nigerian net or hitting their opportunities off target, with Rogerio and Evander the worse culprits.

The South Americans were however made to regret their missed opportunities when the lethal Osimhen extended his lead at the top of the goalscoring charts.

John Lazarus crossed from the Nigerian right and the Nigerian No9 headed in, via a deflection off Eder Militao.

Barely a minute after, Nigeria doubled their lead through Kingsley Michael while Anumudu made it three after hitting a left-footed drive from distance which skipped off the turf, and past the Brazilian goalkeeper.

The second period saw few clear-cut opportunities, with Funsho Bamgboye and Evander going closest for either side but, in truth, it was a mere procession for the holders to take a step closer to retaining their title. They will head to Concepcion for Thursday’s semi-final.

Lagos policemen abduct, torture journalist, others

When last Friday, journalist and media strategist, Femi Owolabi, went clubbing in the FESTAC area of Lagos State, little did he know that his night of fun would end behind bars.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Owolabi was abducted by ‘raider’ policemen attached to the State Department of Criminal Investigation, Yaba, and was subjected to several hours of torture.

Owolabi said on the fateful day, he had gone to Rapongi night club with a female friend, Chidinma. The journalist said he had been experiencing some pains in his right foot around 1am and decided to massage it so he left Chidinma inside the club and stepped outside.

PUNCH Metro learnt that it was while Owolabi was massaging his foot that policemen in black shirts alighted from a blue coloured bus, slapped him and threw him into the vehicle.

Owolabi said, “I stooped somewhere close to the entrance, and I unlaced my boot to rub my toes. When I stooped again to lace the boot, an unfriendly hand landed a massive slap on my back, and then, grabbed me by the band-waist of my trousers and that of my boxers, and then dragged me along.

“When I asked ‘who are you, what do you want?’, multiple slaps landed on my face. He dragged me to where about three blue Volkswagen Vanagon buses were parked and flung me in. About 30 of us were sandwiched inside the 18-seater bus.

“Things were not clear to me. When I asked what I had done, they landed multiple slaps on my face. The man on whose lap I sat was crying that he could not find his glasses but a policeman, who thought I was the one screaming, slapped me again. When I asked them to give the man his glasses, they slapped me again.”

Owolabi said in a bid to subdue all the people in the bus, the policemen fired tear gas canisters into the vehicle and locked the doors to prevent them from running out.

He said it was when the policemen alighted that he was able to see the inscriptions on their black shirts.

He added, “Minutes later, as we all muttered inside the bus, a teargas canister was released inside the bus and these gunmen, all in black T-shirts bearing the crest of the Nigeria Police Force with ‘Raiders’ written across their chest, surrounded the bus, with their guns aimed at us.

“We were all coughing and the doors were locked. As I brought my head out of the window, one of the policemen gave me a punch in the head and I had to stick my head back into the vehicle. He said if I brought out my head again, he would shoot me.”

PUNCH Metro learnt that one of Owolabi’s phones had been seized by the policemen but he was able to use his second phone to send a text message to his friend, Chidinma, who was still in the club.

He also posted an update on his Facebook wall and alerted his friends of the wickedness he was being subjected to.

The journalist said they were all driven to the SDCI in the Ebute Meta area of the state where they were lined up and told to take off their clothes.

Owolabi said, “We were asked to raise our hands as we descended from the buses. We were then, asked to take off our clothes and take our seats, in a linear order, on the ground. While I was taking off my socks, my hidden phone fell off and as one of the policemen rushed to pick it, he used the barrel of his gun to hit me in the chest.

“We, immediately, appeared as criminals being paraded, as the policemen, feeling excited, took turns to snap us with their phones. One of them came with a pen and paper and wrote down our names. When he got to me, I looked into his eyes and I refused to answer.

“He called me an idiot and slapped me twice. I lowered my head, and then, another policeman from behind started to slap me on the back of my neck. I couldn’t hold the pains, and I broke into tears.

“We were called one after the other, into a circle and they started inspecting our bodies and those that had marks on their bodies were questioned.”

The victim said when a bullet wound was discovered on the back of one of those arrested, he was beaten by about 10 policemen for several minutes

He said the policemen entertained themselves by beating up each of the arrested persons. He said when one of those arrested asked for permission to go and urinate, he was slapped repeatedly by the policemen. He said he became thirsty but was scared to ask for water.

Owolabi said the policemen started beating him again when he refused to squat as ordered.

He said, “I could barely get a space to sit. My legs ached terribly. A policeman ordered me to squat properly. When I told him that there wasn’t enough space, about three others joined him and for five minutes, it was a beating galore. The beating stopped when they had successfully beaten me into a space, under a table, where I had to fold my aching legs.”

He said the policemen hurled insults at all those arrested outside the club.

He added, “I observed how happy these policemen were, how they made a mockery of everyone. ‘Stupid people, una get money to dey go club go drink go carry woman abi?’, one them said, with a hiss.

“A pot-bellied man – who should be in his late thirties – caged with me under the table, shook his head. The man said, ‘I can’t find my wedding ring again. I am a Federal Government worker. My family is out of the country and I thought I should come to the club this Friday. When did it become a crime to club again?’

“A policeman came to see us under the table and I told him I was not a criminal but he said, ‘So, you think everybody here is a criminal and you are the only one innocent?”

Owolabi said all of those arrested were taken from one room to the other at the SDCI.

He said salvation came his way when a senior officer entered the room and he (Owolabi) quickly identified himself as a journalist to the officer.

The victim said immediately he identified himself, the policemen’s attitude towards him changed and he was released alongside a few others.

Owolabi said, “I came out of the queue and ran to meet a man whom I heard them call Oga. I told him, ‘I am a journalist, we work together with you people, the law enforcement agencies, please help me, sir.’

“He told me to identify myself but I explained that all my belongings had been seized by the policemen. When I told him that he could verify my identity through my phone, he told his men, ‘Hey! Bring this man’s clothes, he’s a journalist’.

“The man told a policeman named Isiaka to take me back to FESTAC, where they had arrested me. But the oga said I should ‘give his boys money for fuel.’”

Owolabi said Isiaka collected N5, 000 from him while some of the people arrested with him were driven to a nearby bank where they withdrew money from the ATM and gave the money to the policemen.

He said some money was given to the ‘oga’ that had released him.

When contacted on the telephone, the Police spokesman, Joe Offor, promised to call back to give an appropriate response.

However, three subsequent calls put through to his phone proved abortive.

MTN bows to pressure, agrees to pay N1.04trn fine

While pleading for staggered payment model, MTN has finally bowed to pressure as it has accepted to pay the N1.04 trillion fine slammed on it last week by the telecoms regulatory authority, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Accordingly, the telecoms operator was fine for violating its directive on SIM deactivation.

This follows series of meeting held between MTN management team from South Africa and Nigeria with the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.

The telecoms operator which has largest subscriber base in Nigeria, it was gathered, may have agreed to pay the fine to sustain the interest of its telecoms business.

Industry sources who confirmed the new arrangement, disclosed that the federal government is already yielding to the plea, which according to him, was part of the agreement reached at the series of meeting held at the weekend in Nigeria.

“There have been series of meeting at the Presidency between the Vice President Osinbajo and MTN team both from South Africa and the Nigerian arm. MTN wanted a waiver considering their level of investments in the country, but government did not buy the idea of waiver. Instead, I think there will be concession, but certainly not a waiver. At the conclusion of the meeting, the MTN people negotiated on how to stagger the payment. The Presidency is even angry because MTN was a signatory to the regulation, but they are failing to comply with rules.”, the source added.

It would be recalled that NCC had said that MTN would not escape the fine, owing to the enormity of its implication to national security.

Although NCC had hinted that the issue is being handled by the federal government, the telecoms authority also noted that MTN would risk withdrawal of its licence if its fails to comply with the fine.

Even with the widespread calls for the intervention of the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), on the N1.04 trillion fine, Chief Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), had last week called on the NSA not to intervene in the matter, adding that NCC regulation must take its course.

NCC said it had consistently engaged Mobile Network Operators, (MNOs) to strictly adhere to the regulations and its business rules in the registration of their subscribers.

Following several engagements, the Commission had confirmed various cases of violations of the regulations and sanctioned appropriately.

Devalue Naira, remove subsidy and ‘kill’ Nigerians

IMF Africa Director, Mrs. Atoinette Sayeh recently noted at a press conference at a World Bank event in Lima, Peru, that “…those measures introduced by CBN to restrict demand and limit access to official foreign exchange for certain imports are quite detrimental to economic activities and invariably led to a lot of unhappiness in the private sector”.

Consequently, Sayeh, apparently concluded that “these measures were neither sustainable or advisable, and therefore hoped “that there will be an opportunity to review forex restrictions and permit the Exchange rate to continue to adjust”, because, according to her “the restrictions are “already making things harder for the average person to buy milk or to buy milk at an affordable price”.

Evidently, there was no mention of under nourished babies or government’s insensitivity to the plight of the average Nigerian in Sayeh’s comments, but it is difficult to deny the intended mental association!

Incidentally, the IMF’s demand for Naira devaluation has also been echoed from various strongholds and media organs of international investment capital and speculative portfolios; notably, ‘The Economist’s commentary titled ‘Toothpick Alert’, was a bland and disdainful parody of CBN’s exclusion of 41 imported items from access to cheaper official forex sales.

Similarly, earlier this year, the International banking stalwart, JP Morgan also gave notice of its decision to delist Nigeria’s government bonds from its widely subscribed index, unless the Naira was devalued, and CBN also increased liberal dollar supply to the forex market, presumably, so that foreign portfolio investors, (i.e. those without factories or productive enterprises) particularly can take out their speculative cash flows at short notice, if necessary.

Evidently, further Naira devaluation would also make it much cheaper for such footloose portfolio investors to acquire both public and private equity in Nigeria for less dollar values. Ultimately, therefore, if Naira depreciation persists, more Nigerian equity prices will fall in value below US$0.10(Ten Cents); expectedly, before that happens, the much sought after foreign investors would have long spoken with both feet.

The above awkward realities, notwithstanding, last week, no less a person than the suspended former CBN Governor, Lamido Sanusi, who is now, the Emir of Kano, joined advocates of Naira devaluation, when he advised, that “the country cannot continue to live in denial on the Naira” and therefore called for Naira devaluation as well as the removal of fuel subsidy.

According to Sanusi, “It is wrong to continue to pretend that you can keep the Naira at a certain level, when the price of oil is falling, without depleting your reserves. You have to make a choice” he advised. Sanusi warned that CBN’s policy was depriving key industries of imports and therefore suggested that “if we have to make a choice between economic growth and devaluation”, his recommendation would be that “we protect growth”.

However, His Highness is clearly in denial that it will be an impossible challenge to protect growth if the Naira slide subsists unchecked overtime.

However, the ex CBN Governor, correctly recognizes that CBN has lost control of its core mandate for price stability as, “inflation is already upon us”, according to him; however, Sanusi, inexplicably suggests that “it is time to loosen monetary policy” to counter the subsisting oppressive, and irrepressible excess money supply that is primarily responsible for rising inflation and the diminishing purchasing value of all incomes, particularly the incomes of millions of Nigerians who still earn below $2/day.

Sadly, our parlous economy, is today, probably the product of the application of such a misguided problem solving mindset, which has expectedly failed to favorably resolve our challenges with inflation, interest and Naira exchange rates. In addition to devaluation, His Highness, warned that unless we loosen monetary policy to help stimulate the economy with cheaper funds, and “lower CBN’s key interest rate from a record high of 13%, we would compound an exchange rate crisis for business with high borrowing costs and declining demand”.

The essence of Sanusi’s recommendation is that if CBN reduces its key interest rate, commercial banks would follow suit and lower their rates to possibly below 20% from the average of 25% currently available to the real sector. Expectedly, accessibility to cheaper funds should stimulate consumer demand and also reduce cost of loans across the board.

Instructively, however, unless the existing burden of systemic excess money supply is resolved, it will be reckless to reduce CBN’s monetary policy rate to best practice level below 5% across board to induce single digit cost of funds that would jumpstart economy revival.

However, it will be clearly absurd and foolhardy to introduce policies that provide cheaper funds to stimulate consumer demand when surplus cash is already a disenabling abiding economic burden. This would be akin to pouring petrol into the already raging fire of spiraling inflation.

Ultimately, the N1,000 note which is currently less than $5 may become worth less than $1, if money supply remains untamed, while fuel price, even with local production, will more than quadruple with its own distortional inflationary consequences!

Evidently, our presently disenabling inflation rate is fueled by a subsisting burden of systemic excess money which has forcibly predicated CBN’s need to remove over N3Tn from the burdensome systemic liquidity surplus between September-December with treasury debts.

Not surprisingly, when he was CBN Governor, Sanusi had similarly defended this same distortional process that constrains government to pay double digit interest rates for funds which will simply be sequestered as idle funds, notwithstanding the insistent cry of the real sector for access to cheaper funds.

Advocates for a weaker Naira like the Emir, are always eager to explain that Naira devaluation is inevitable since the fall in crude oil prices has depleted CBN’s self styled “own reserves”. These compulsive Naira bashers, however, always become unsettled when asked why Naira did not appreciate from N153 to below N100=$1, for example, when CBN reserves exceeded $55bn, with the controversial Excess Crude Account also in excess of $8bn.

Furthermore, devaluation advocates cannot also explain why Naira exchanged consistently for N80=$1 between 1995-98 despite CBN’s relatively paltry reserves of just over $4bn and barely 4 months imports cover.

Conversely, CBN’s reserves, presently average about $30bn with certainly longer real imports cover than was possible prior to Obasanjo’s administration, when the Naira exchanged below N100 = $1, yet, we are inexplicably presently confronted with intense pressure for further Naira devaluation.

Poverty will clearly deepen nationwide with serious social consequences if our choice strategy is to rescue our economy with further Naira devaluation and removal of fuel subsidy as recommended by the IMF and likeminded experts like Sanusi.

'She's Not First Lady Material-Donald Trump's ex-wife Ivana slams current wife Melanie

Donald Trump's ex wife, Ivana Trump has slammed his current wife Melania, saying she is not First Lady material.

Trump's first wife Ivana, who was married to the presidential hopeful from 1977 to 1991, said Melania 'can't talk' and 'can't give a speech'.

The 66-year-old - who had three children with the billionaire - reportedly said she would have made a good First Lady and backed her ex-husband to be a 'great President'.Ivana was told at a recent party in New York that she would have been a good First Lady.
According to the New York Daily News, she laughed and replied: '

Yes, but the problem is, what is he going to do with his third wife? She can't talk, she can't give a speech, she doesn't go to events, she doesn't want to be involved.'

Melania, 45, has been surprisingly quiet in Trump's presidential campaign so far, especially considering that she is used to being in the limelight from her time as a model.
In 2011, when Trump was thought to be readying a challenge to President Obama, Melania was asked whether she was prepared to be First Lady.

With her husband standing next to her, she coyly replied: 'Well, we'll see what happens.'

Trump married third wife Melania Knauss, a Slovenian model, in 2005.

WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT: Cops caught on camera 'executing' criminal

He runs down the quiet suburban street, two police vans in pursuit. A shot hits his arm and he falls to the ground, dropping his gun.
As he lies writhing on the pavement, injured and trapped between a fence and a delivery van - his firearm out of reach - a policeman puts a bullet through his chest.

Another walks up to him and kicks him as he lies bleeding.

Then the police constable who has just shot him in the chest has a brief word with a colleague.
The constable repositions himself, stretches out his arms, takes aim and finishes him off. Blood runs onto the pavement.

It took no more than a few minutes for Khulekani Mpanza, a suspected criminal, to die on the pavement on Harvey Street in Krugersdorp, west of Johannesburg.

These horrifying scenes, which took place less than a kilometre from Lewisham Primary School a fortnight ago, were captured on CCTV footage in possession of the Sunday Times.

The footage again highlights the explosive relationship between cops and criminals in South Africa, where police are repeatedly accused of acting outside the law - and 58 policemen have been killed so far this year.

It was just after 2.30pm on Monday October 19 when police, acting on a tip-off about a planned robbery, were in the suburb of Lewisham, Krugerdorp, monitoring a suspicious Toyota Tazz.
Mpanza, 32, walked into Omega Paint and Hardware store in the area. He loitered near the door, cocked his gun and then, according to a witness, walked out and fired eight shots at police sitting in a van about 60m away.

"He was so close and he just kept firing at the police, who were hiding out in their car. Then he ran and police chased after him," said the witness, who asked not to be identified.

A report on the incident in the local newspaper was innocuously headlined: "One dead as police return fire".

Policing expert Dr Johan Burger described the CCTV footage as shocking and called for the immediate arrest of the policeman who shot Mpanza while he lay wounded on the ground.

"I simply could not believe the callousness ... especially the one policeman. He went, and at very, very close range, shot and killed that man," said Burger.

"The one word that went through my mind as I watched this was that this is an execution. It's not even a murder, it's absolute execution."

Burger said he was even more disturbed that the constable's colleagues did not seem to stop him or express "any emotion or shock" when he fired the fatal shots at a man lying on the ground.

"All of that, in my mind, is criminal," he said.

The Sunday Times has established the identity of the policeman who is seen firing the two shots.

Currently on leave, the constable has been with the South African Police Service for four years.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) confirmed that it has opened a murder docket.

Said Burger: "It is clear that this suspect no longer posed a threat of serious violence to the arrester or any other person. The moment that qualification falls away, it means the use of deadly force must stop immediately."

Burger said that in terms of police conduct regulations, the officers at the scene at Harvey Street appeared to be guilty of four infractions:

Shooting a suspect who does not pose a threat of harm;

Kicking and assaulting a suspect who does not pose a threat;

Watching and not stopping their colleague from shooting a suspect who did not pose any danger; and

Failing to offer medical assistance to the injured suspect.

Krugersdorp police spokesman Sergeant Tshepiso Mashale confirmed that none of the officers involved in the incident - one of whom is a sergeant - had been suspended as yet.

"Police management is aware of the incident and forwarded all the case information, including the CCTV footage, to Ipid. It is only after getting word from Ipid that we can take action against these members," Mashale said.

Mpanza's shocking death comes barely two months after the murder conviction of eight former policemen from Daveyton who dragged Mozambican taxi driver Mido Macia behind a police van, resulting in his death.

Ipid spokesman Robbie Raburabu said Mpanza's postmortem showed that he sustained three gunshot wounds, to his arm, head, and chest. "It's very difficult to get witnesses in such cases. We were very lucky to get this footage," he said.

Raburabu could not immediately confirm whether Mpanza had a criminal record or had been arrested previously. The police also could not confirm whether the four officers had any history of complaints.

Mpanza, a security guard with eight children who lived with a family member on the East Rand, was buried at his home in Nongoma in rural KwaZulu-Natal last Sunday.

His brother Mboniseni, who works in Johannesburg as a taxi driver, said the family had been pained to have to bury him not knowing what happened.

"All the police said was that he attempted to rob a shop and that they shot him," he said.

On Friday, after watching the CCTV footage, he said: "We buried him not knowing the full story."

He winced each time a shot was fired at his brother and struggled to contain his emotions. "This is my brother. Yes, they might say he is a criminal, but why did they not arrest him? Why kill a person by shooting repeatedly? The postmortem people said he died because he did not get any help, and you can see now that he is lying there and they are not doing anything to help him. They are just waiting for him to die."

Mpanza is survived by his parents, three siblings and his eight children.

If you love someone, let them know immediately-Genevieve Nnaji

Screen goddess Genevieve Nnaji has opened up on her new movie Road to Yesterday which is set to hit the cinemas nationwide soon, and how it relates to her.

She also advised not to take any one for granted when it comes to love. Excerpts from her chat with Daily Sun.

What inspired the production of the film at this point in time?

Having waited for something of interest for me to do to entertain my fans; having missed the craft, I did not find anything of interest. So, I figured that I had to take my future in my own hands and produce the type of movie that I want to be associated with at this point in time. I mean a film that will reflect my growth as a person and as an artiste, and also where I feel the industry should be turning towards. It is a statement in so many ways. It just felt like the right time to do it.

Does any part of the film reflect anything about Genevieve either as an individual or thespian?

That is the fact that I don’t dwell on bad situations for too long before moving on.

If you were to advice a Genevieve on how best to protect her relationship, marriage and image, what would you say to her?

I would tell her never take anyone for granted. If you love someone, don’t waste time in letting them know. Life is too short and we have to make every minute count.

ANAN Warns Against Further Devaluation Of Naira

The Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN), has advised the Federal Government not to further devalue the naira.

President of the association, Mr Anthony Nzom, said this at the end of the “ANAN Walk Against Corruption for a Healthier Economy and Longevity,” which over 2,000 members of the association participated in.

He spoke against the backdrop of ongoing arguments and counter -arguments on the fate of the naira

“We have to be careful about further devaluation of the naira and be careful when people outside the country encourage us to do certain things.

“Further devaluation of the naira is in the interest of who?” he asked.

Nzom recalled that in the 1990s, the naira was exchanging at N80 to a dollar, and lamented that today, the naira had been further devalued.

He suggested that to fight corruption, no Nigerian should have a foreign account, adding that there should be no undergraduate studies abroad.

On the Treasury Single Account (TSA), the ANAN president said those giving excuses about the TSA did not want to accept change.

“Change is the only thing people do not accept. People want to see if government will soft-pedal.

“These are people with hidden accounts here and there,’’ he said.

According to him, the TSA does not stop agencies from paying salaries.

“Let us see how, when and who the monies are going to. I support what the government is doing,’’ Nzom said, adding that President Muhammadu Buhari alone cannot fight corruption and that everybody should be involved.

10 Clever Ways to Clear Out Adult Acne

By Linda Daniels

Acne creates spots on the skin surface making it have a non-uniform complexion. This is caused by hormonal changes resulting from consumption of some foods and normal body processes such as menstruation. It also caused by the use of strong chemicals used for skin treatment and many other human causes such as dirt. When most people are teenagers, they are told that when they are over the teen age acne will eventually stop bothering them. However, this is not true because there are people who are over 25 years who still experience the same problem. Does this worry you so much? Now you should be smiling with a sigh of relieving because below are the wise ways of getting rid of adult acne:
  • Lower sugar consumption
A study was conducted on those people who are cultural and do not consume any sugar, and a very small percentage of them had issues with acne. Excess consumption of sugar causes secretion of insulin to regulate sugar level in the blood. Too much of it in the blood causes secretion of testosterone which raises sebum production which in turn causes acne.
  • Consume food rich in proteins
Proteins are digested less fast than carbohydrates to glucose. It, therefore, doesn’t raise the blood sugar level as fast as carbohydrates. This, therefore, helps to get rid of acne caused by sugar as explained above.

  • Have enough sleep
Lack of enough sleep can cause hormone fluctuations which are a major cause of acne. Sleep enhances not only the skin beauty but also the general beauty including the eyes.
  • Exercise
This ensures the skin pores are open and clean therefore preventing the chances of acne and cleans the one which has already occurred.
  • Consider natural substances for treatment
Some natural substances like Aloe Vera are anti-inflammatory and antibacterial therefore assists in getting rid of acne spots. Other substances include lemon juice, yogurt, garlic juice, pawpaw and tomatoes. Any of these can be used to treat your skin and please ensure proper rinsing after the best acne treatment.

  • Lower your consumption of dairy products
In as much as dairy products are believed to be very good for body building, its excess has an effect on the skin. Most cows these days receive hormonal treatment, which increase hormones in the milk that consequently cause acne.
  • Lower the rate of alcohol consumption
Excess alcohol causes acne and pale skin. Therefore, it is very wise for you to take it in limited amounts or avoid taking it at all. When you are at a party with a lot of drinks, always think about how your skin will look like on the next party.
  • Drink a lot of water
The body depends on water to perform almost all of its activities. Water enables breaking down of larger amounts of fats which will in turn reduce its accumulation on the surface of the skin hence clearing acne and preventing its development on clear skin.
  • Keep your skin clean
Cleanness ensures the skin pores are kept open hence oxygen circulation in the skin is enhanced. This will help prevent the accumulation of dirt on the skin which can cause acne. Cleanness should be a virtue that every adult possesses.
  • Be careful with the chemicals you apply to your face
A research by dermatologists shows that there are some chemicals that can be cause of acne which are used by people. Always use the natural ways to treat your skin and always select lotions with natural organic materials.

I Was Never Called to be a Pastor - Nosa

Chocolate City gospel artiste, Nosakhare Omoregie, popularly known as Nosa, is one singer who is very blunt whenever he sees somethings not going the right part and as a messenger of God through music, he believes that his music should be able to touch lives.
Nosa while speaking about his foray into God’s ministry disclosed that he was a Pastor for 12 years until he stepped aside in 2015 for a while.

He confessed that he was not called by God to be a Pastor but a personal desire which he developed to work for his creator.
According to the singer, “I was dedicated to church. I was a pastor for 12 years, from 2003 till this year. I just left that ministry and I would still continue. I didn’t get that ceremonial call to be a pastor, but God put that desire to work for him inside of me.”

Born out of desire to please God, the singer got to find out that working for God was not as complicated the way people today make it look like as he feels fulfilled.

“That childhood desire that I would love to do so much for God is still there. In doing that, I discovered that we’ve placed too much drama to the works of God. It is not as complicated as people have made it seem over the years,” he told New Telegraph.
