Akure monarch forbids Eze-Ndigbo from wearing crown

THE Deji of Akureland in Ondo State, Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi yesterday listed conditions for truce with the estranged Eze Ndigbo of Akure, Gregory Iloehike.

One of the condition was that the Igbo leader is forbidden from wearing any form of crown henceforth.

Oba Aladelusi gave the conditions during a meeting Governor Olusegun Mimiko had with him and the Akure Council of Chiefs in Akure on the lingering crisis.

The governor had earlier met with the Igbo leaders led by the embattled Eze Ndigbo, Iloehike at the governors office.

Ileohike was said to have denied disrespecting the Oba and pleaded with the governor to help resolve the over one-week crisis.

Other conditions include that the Eze Ndigbo must apologize for his unruly behaviour in at least three national dailies and on air.

“That the Igbo leader must write a letter of apology to Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi and the Deji-in-Council.

“That the title ‘Eze Ndigbo’ must be reviewed and replaced with a non-controversial honorary title and that the Igbo Leader must comply with all the earlier directives of the palace.’’

Dr Mimiko, however, apologized to the Oba on behalf of the Igbo Leader.

Concede defeat like me if you lose, Jonathan tells Tanzanian presidential aspirants

FORMER President Goodluck Jonathan, chair of the Commonwealth Election Observer Mission to Tanzania, has urged the loser of Sunday’s Tanzanian presidential election to promptly acknowledge it in the interest of the country’s peace and unity.

Jonathan, who has been briefing a broad spectrum of stakeholders in Dar es Salaam – including chairman of the electoral commission, leaders of political parties, journalists, youth organisations and the civil society – said it was equally important to realise that for the poll to be free and fair, all stakeholders must play their part.

“If you lose, accept defeat,” he said, warning that any attempt to reject the will of the people can only lead to chaos. He told them that he immediately accepted defeat after losing his re-election bid early this year because he did not want personal ambition to derail democracy in Nigeria.

“I was concerned about allowing my personal ambition to scuttle a democratic system I had helped to nurture,” he continued.

“In any election, there are winners and losers. The presidential candidate who loses on Sunday should gracefully concede the election to avert a political crisis.”

The two leading Tanzania’s national newspapers, The Guardian and The Citizen, which have been celebrating the former president since his arrival last Monday, quoted him as saying: “If all parties, including the national electoral commission, political parties, and police force will play their role, nothing will stop Tanzania from recording a free and fair election this year.

“Successful elections will depend on how each stakeholder plays his or her role to ensure a peaceful, inclusive and transparent electoral process…I’m confident Tanzanians will achieve this.”

He assured the public that the Commonwealth Observers Group would perform its observation role with impartiality, independence and transparency.

He also said the group would issue an interim statement on the preliminary findings shortly after the elections, while a final report would be prepared in Tanzania.

“We will also submit the report on the Tanzanian elections to the Secretary General of the Commonwealth and subsequently share with relevant stakeholders and the public. The group is scheduled to depart in Tanzania on October 31,” he said.

The group comprises 14 members drawn from various Commonwealth regions, including Africa, Asia and the Caribbean; and Jonathan is one of two former African heads of states leading the observer teams. The other is Armando Guebuza, former Mozambican president, who is leading the African Union (AU) mission.

Guebuza was Mozambique’s third president who led the country for a maximum of two five-year terms and handed over to a successor from his party, Frelimo.

The incumbent president, Jakaya Kikwete, is ineligible to be elected to a third term due to term limits. Therefore, the ruling, the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), selected John Magufuli, minister of works, as its presidential candidate – ahead of the front-runner former prime minister Edward Lowassa.

Lowassa consequently defected to an opposition party that is a coalition of four parties, and will therefore run against his former party man.

We never rejected or denied APC broadcast space —AIT •Challenges Garba Shehu to show evidence of denial

THE management of DAAR Communications, owners of Africa Independent Television (AIT), has denied allegations that it exhibited bias against the presidential campaign of Muhammadu Buhari, ahead the March 28 election.

This was as the company refuted claims that it denied the All Progressives Congress (APC) considerable airtime on its medium.

In a statement issued by the management of DAAR Communications, following a statement credited to the head of President Muhammadu Buhari media team, Garba Shehu, said “we wish to state categorically and emphatically that at no time did we reject or deny the presidential candidate of the APC broadcast space on our station – Africa Independent Television (AIT).

“It has always been our policy to open up the democratic space to all the broad spectrum of actors in the political horizon.

“For the benefit of discerning members of the public and political academics who will obviously document some facts for historical purposes and the stock of public information compendium, we hereby challenge Mallam Garba Shehu to state the names of the officer(s)/department(s) that he dealt with, wherein the materials that he wanted aired were outrightly rejected.”

It added that “we feel pained, disappointed and betrayed by the allegation of maltreatment of APC presidential campaigns by Mallam Garba Shehu who, at various times, requested for unusual discounts and concessions, at short notices, which we often obliged in our spirited efforts of ensuring that we engaged all political parties; most especially the APC in our broadcasts so that we would be fair to all parties.”

“Pastor’’ Sleeps With Woman To Cleanse Her Of Evil - Duping Her Of N700,000

A trader, Elijah Kingsley, 37, on Wednesday appeared before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State, charged with hypnotising a woman and dispossessing her of N700,000.

Kingsley, who lives at No. 4, Fadayomi St. Ojota in Lagos, is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, obtaining by false pretences and stealing.

The Prosecutor, Sgt Lucky Ihiehie, told the court that the accused committed the offences sometime in November 2014 at Ojota Bus Stop.

He said that the complainant, one Beauty Emmanuel, a student, had on Oct. 19 come to the Ojota Police Station to report the matter.

Ihiehie said the complainant reported that sometime last year along Ogudu Road, she met the accused with another man who claimed to be a foreigner.
“The foreigner told her he had goods like laptops and phones for sale and that he needed chemicals to wash some dirty monies.

“The complainant said that she entered into conversation with the fraudsters as they tried to convince her to provide money, adding that at that point, she became unconscious of what happened to her.

“She gave them N27, 000 on the spot and from there they started collecting more sums of money from her.’’

Ihiehie said that the fraudsters later told her on phone that they were washing a large amount of money and that she needed to give them an additional N500, 000 to buy more chemicals to complete the exercise.

“They also warned her that if she revealed this secret to anyone, she would vomit blood and die.
“The accused kept on mounting pressures on her until she paid the money.

“The accused also introduced an alleged fake “pastor’’ to the complainant who told her that she was possessed by an evil spirit that would kill her unless she had an amorous relationship with the accused,’’ he said.

Ihiehie told the court that the complainant said the “pastor’’ insisted that she slept with the accused without protection so that his Fluid would cleanse her of the evil.

He said that the accused regularly had carnal knowledge of Emmanuel and further collected N200,000 from her.

The prosecutor said that after several months, the accused called the complainant on Oct. 19, to demand more money again.

Ihehie said that Emmanuel reported the matter at the police station and the accused was, thereafter, arrested.

The prosecutor quoted the complainant as saying that she knew something was wrong with her while acting on the instructions of the fraudsters .

She said that she was too weak to understand anything until she got help from a friend, Ihiehie said .

PHOTO: Woman scalded with hot oil loses pregnancy

Chiwendu Nwobodo, the 25-year-old woman who was bathed with hot groundnut oil by a neighbour in the Surulere area of Lagos over N900, has lost her two-month-old pregnancy.
Her husband, Chigozie, told PUNCH Metro that his wife had also developed complications as her left ear was now oozing pus.

The suspect, Iya Daniel, had been re-arrested and detained at the State Department of Criminal Investigation, Yaba. Chiwendu and Iya Daniel, who were neighbours, lived on Ogbomosho Street, Ijesha, in the Surulere area.
They were said to have had a disagreement during which Chiwendu reportedly kicked away some balls of puff-puff belonging to the suspect.

Iya Daniel allegedly demanded N900 for the damage, which the victim’s husband promised to pay.
However, after returning from work on the evening of the fateful day, the airport worker was said to have gone to the toilet.
She was reportedly coming out when Iya Daniel accosted her and emptied a pail of hot groundnut oil on her.She was subsequently rushed to the hospital and placed on admission.

The suspect was arrested by policemen from the Ijesha division, but was later released on bail.
Chigozie told PUNCH Metro at the SDCI on Wednesday that his wife had lost her first pregnancy.
He said, “She developed complications and started losing blood from her private parts. We were advised to do a scan, and the result showed that she had lost the baby.
“We were advised to take her to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital. The doctors said they will have to flush her system to remove the remains of the baby. They also prescribed some drugs to her.
“I am sad because it was supposed to be our first child. We have been married since May 2014 and we were happy when our family doctor confirmed that she was pregnant. But now that she has lost it. I am angry because Iya Daniel caused it.”

Our correspondent observed that the victim’s right ear was discharging white fluids, while some parts of her face had peeled off.
She also walked with some difficulty as her sister, who said her picture should not be taken, helped her to the door.
When our correspondent asked how she was doing, she simply said she was getting better.
It was, however, learnt that Chiwendu rarely slept as she always felt pains all over her body.
Chigozie said she wanted the suspect charged for the injury on his wife and the lost of the pregnancy.
“This is murder. I want the law to take its full course in this case,” he said.

Ezekwesili slams senators for following Saraki to court

A former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has berated senators for abandoning their legislative duties and accompanying Senate President Bukola Saraki to the Code of Conduct Tribunal where he is answering charges of corruption.

The former minister said on her official Twitter handle that the act was shameful and tantamount to debasing the Senate as an institution.

She said senators following a colleague to court to answer charges of corruption was not the done thing in any part of the world.

Ezekwesili said such an act of solidarity by those in government was the reason why Nigeria continued to receive negative international ratings in the area of corruption.

In a series of tweets aimed at Saraki, the former minister said, “Honestly, my dear Bukola Saraki, you should have dissuaded your colleagues from doing such damage to the democratic institution of the National Assembly.

“My dear friend, leadership by example is everything. You should not privatise our democratic institution. Our dear lawmakers would do well to quickly retrace their steps from this egregious and ill-advised ‘union’ on a private judicial proceeding.

“Citizens must realise that we cannot afford to permit our public officials to continue with the habit of privatising democratic institutions.

“When next citizens see our country’s low ranking on Transparency International’s Corrupt Perception Index and Mo Ibrahim’s Governance Index, please connect the dots.”

In subsequent tweets, the former minister said those defending the act of the lawmakers were ignorant.

Ezekwesili said those suffering the effects of government corruption were mainly the poor in society.

She, however, said the issue of corruption was not peculiar to any political party as all were guilty.

She added, “Young ones who cannot see the connection between their poor condition and the monster of corruption are to be pitied. When it comes to the matter of tackling this cancerous level of corruption in our land, citizens must learn to be only on their own side.

“It is the poor that bear the highest and gravest cost of systematic corruption. It should be their interest to have corruption effectively tackled. Ultimately, the war against systematic corruption will morph into a class war in this land. No other way can this monster be defeated.

“Those wasting their time to view these anomalies from political party lenses do themselves harm. Their acronym does not change their habits. Shameful acts like what our lawmakers did today explain why some ignorant non-Africans conclude that corruption is cultural. It is not.”

In his response, however, Saraki insinuated that his trial was a political one.

He said his colleagues followed him to the tribunal in order to show that the Senate was an independent institution which could not be influenced by external forces.

The Senate President said, “Due process is key to the sustainability of our democracy. It will be harmful for our nation if institutions are weakened for personal causes.

“The sustainability of our institutions is also devoid of external inferences.”
