Court hears Lai Mohammed /Metuh N500m suit Nov. 17

A Lagos State High Court in Ikeja on Tuesday adjourned till November 17, 2015 to hear the N500m defamation suit filed by the Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, against his counterpart in the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Olisa Metuh.

Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye, who is presiding over the case, directed Mohammed’s lawyer, Mr. Wahab Shittu, to ensure service of all the court papers on Metuh and adjourned till November 17 for report of service and hearing of the pending application.

Mohammed, who claimed to have been defamed by a press release allegedly authored and circulated on September 20, 2015 by Metuh, had last week filed the N500m defamation suit.

Mohammed alleged that Metuh, in the said release, accused him of embezzling the funds meant for the fencing of an airport in one of the APC-controlled states in the South-West.

Mohammed also claimed that Metuh said he (Mohammed) obtained money to supply ambulances to one APC-controlled state in the South-West but never did so.

Mohammed further claimed that Metuh, in the statement, had allegedly wondered where Mohammed got the courage to speak on corruption when indeed the APC spokesman had mastered the art of corruption having been “a personal aide to one of the most corrupt politicians to ever bestride the political space of the country.”

Mohammed, who said he was a one-time coordinator of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Campaign Organisation, claimed that the statement credited to Metuh was carefully calculated to inflict damage on his reputation and to lessen his image in the estimation of the public.

Mohammed, who is a ministerial nominee, claimed that Metuh had injured his character in a grave manner and caused him considerable reputational destruction and embarrassment.

Apart from N50om damages, he is seeking an order mandating Metuh to not only retract his statement but to also tender published apology to him in a widely read newspaper for seven consecutive days.

He is also seeking an order of perpetual injunction restraining Metuh and his privies from further publishing or disseminating libelous materials against him.

President’s wife pledges to champion public advocacy against child marriage

Mrs Aisha Buhari, wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday pledged to lead public advocacy for the legislation against child marriage in the country.

This is contained in a statement issued by Mr Geoffery Njoku, the UNICEF Media and External Relations Officer, made available to newsmen in Abuja.

According to the statement, Buhari made the promise when 50 adolescent girls drawn from different schools in Bauchi, Zamfara, Katsina, Niger and Sokoto states as well as the Federal Capital Territory, paid her a courtesy visit.

It said: ``No single girl will be left behind in my movement to get every girl into school.’’

The statement quoted Aisha as urging that ``parents should endeavour to keep their daughters in school for at least 12 years’’.

It said: ``UNICEF and other partners are focusing their activities on the transformation power of education to equip adolescent girls to overcome all challenges that affect their lives and inhibit their prospects of advancement.”

The statement also observed that lack of female teachers in the rural areas was one of the challenges that had hindered girls’ enrolment and retention in schools.

It said that the UNICEF, in its intervention and support funds from partners, had started the Girls’ Education Project Phase 3 (GEP3) to ensure the enrolment of one million girls into school by the end of 2020.

The statement said that the project was currently running in Bauchi, Katsina, Niger, Sokoto, Zamfara and had initially contributed to the enrolment of 360,000 girls in primary schools in those states.

In her comments, the statement quoted Ms Jean Gough, UNICEF Representative in Nigeria, as saying that investment in adolescent girls’ education was a wise thing to do.

``Adolescent girls should be empowered through deliberate policies to transform their lives and those around them.

``Young girls, who are educated, are better placed to improve their lives and their children’s health and have chances of survival to boost their work prospects.

``Investing in high quality girls’ education, prepare girls for life, jobs and leadership. It directly translates into the girls being powerful and positive change agents of development,” she said in the statement.

NAN reports that the 2013 National Demographic Health Survey indicated that there were about 20 million adolescent girls in Nigeria and with very low education rates.

Most of them were majorly present among very poor citizens, while 60 per cent of the 10.5 million children out of school in Nigeria were girls.

Mortuary manager suspended after wrong body taken for burial

The manager of the Medico-Legal Mortuary in Gale Street‚ responsible for a horrific error‚ was suspended on Tuesday.

She was suspended after she refused to assist a family that took the wrong corpse for burial.

KZN Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo said in a statement that the manager was suspended because of “her failure to give leadership on numerous occasions in cases pertaining to her duties”.

The MEC had to intervene on the weekend after the issue was aired on SABV TV. He said the manager failed to act after being approached by junior officials.

The manager also failed to act after it was discovered that rats were disfiguring corpses at the mortuary.

This despite three bodies displaying bite marks were discovered earlier this month. Further inspection of the facility revealed that all the cold room door rubbers were damaged by rats‚ but nothing was done about the problem.

The MEC said: “We really cannot keep a person without empathy in such a sensitive environment. Here we need people who will appreciate that even the departed have a right to dignity.

We simply cannot keep a manager who fails to show leadership and cannot take decisive action to resolve challenges. Our sympathies go out to all the affected families.”

The 3 MAIN Things Men Want In A Relationship

As a woman you may not agree with these because this is NOT what YOU want in a relationship, but remember, you are a woman and thus have different desires and expectations. When it comes to MEN these are the MAIN things they look for when it comes to starting a relationship.

I agree that there may be men out there that have additional expectations when looking for a partner but those guys are in the low minority and that’s exactly why we won’t be discussing those other “desires” as they do not fit in with the GENERAL mindset of men and their motivations.

1. SEX
I’m sure this doesn’t come as a big shock but it may be shocking to realize that it’s the MOST important thing a guy wants from a woman. No, this is not my PERSONAL opinion either; it really is the driving factor for all men. Quite frankly we can call this the reason why MOST men get up in the morning, in hopes that they’ll wake up the next day with someone in their bed.

You might argue that food is more important to some men but if that were the case, and men had to choose between food and sex, starvation would probably be the number 1 reason why the male population is quickly dropping.

The basic gist of it is that, without constant sex most men are unable to function. If constant sex is missing from their lives, then they will do anything to make it happen. Don’t think of sex as kinky desire many men have, it all boils down to a WOMAN that is willing to get naked with a man on a regular basis. If you’re that woman and you’re sleeping with us regularly, then the man you’re sleeping with will CONSIDER (not immediately want) you for a relationship.

2. Comfort
Comfort is another incredibly important thing to us men, and I can confidently say that comfort is the main reason why most men STAY in relationships.

Many men want and stay with women that provide them with a safe haven, a comfortable place, a warm atmosphere in which we can escape the noise and stress from the outside world. This is not a physical environment, but more an emotional one. The fact that a guy can come home from work, sit down on his couch with his lovely woman next to him is something that all men dream about. We want you to be part of the relaxed atmosphere that takes our minds away from everything else in his life.

We love and appreciate your supportive attitude and soothing words. We relish in your warmth and understanding. To put this more simply, your very presence makes us feel better.
On the flip side, if you nag, criticize, treat us with antipathy (like the “outside” world) we’re LESS likely to stay in a relationship and would rather do anything to get out.

3. Companionship
Finally, companionship, this is probably the reason why men eventually decide to marry a woman. As the word companionship very eloquently describes this need, we are looking for a person that is fun to be around; a person that shares our own interests; a person that we can talk to about our dreams, goals; a person that gets our sense of humor; a person that will stick by us no matter what.
Once we find such a person, it’s only natural that we will try to do absolutely everything in our power to spend the most amount of time together. Oh compatibility…and its powerful drive to stick people together.

There you have it ladies, the simple, shocking but yet hard truth about what men want from a relationship. You might think that he is surely searching for something more than that, maybe a partner, a soul mate, life mate, coffee mate, roommate or whatever else. You may be thinking that because that’s what you’d want from a man, but as I’ve mentioned in the beginning, that’s because women and men have very different needs and desires when it comes to a relationship.
Although sometimes we may have other “requests”, the bottom line is that they all boil down to these BIG 3.

NERC to Release New Electricity Tariffs by End of October

NERC Chairman, Dr. Sam Amadi

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has said the new electricity tariffs proposed by the distribution companies for approval by the regulatory agency would be ready for implementation by the end of October.

The agency at its recent public consultation where the proposed new retail electricity rates were jointly reviewed by stakeholders, explained that it would first review the figures presented by the Discos, taking into consideration the diverse views of consumer groups, who were at the consultation before approving any rates.

Its chairman, Dr. Sam Amadi however noted that the new rates would be out and subsequently practical in the sector by the end of October.

Amadi further stated that from the end of October, the country’s electricity sector is expected to operate with new sets of tariff which is considered cost-reflective and capable of attracting investments in the sector.

“The new tariff is expected by the end of the month but we may skip our timeline to be able to do more thorough work. For example, we have to go to Kaduna and find out the numbers but essentially, our target is the end of the month,” Amadi said.

While reiterating the federal government’s reported stance on the tariff review, Amadi further said: “The policy for government is that we need a tariff that encourages investment. Ultimately, whatever they send to us, we are not going to give them a back of the envelop tariff. They have to satisfy all expected regulatory standards.

“The regulator does not allow people to recover more than what they are supposed to recover.”

He equally noted that the diverse views presented by consumers at the consultations would be considered in the final priming of the rates, adding that the commission would remain impartial in its approval of rates for use by the Discos.

“The views of consumers have been tremendous, if you recall, the issue of fixed charge, CAPMI and penalising Discos came from consultation.

“If you look back, you will see that we have always factored the views of consumers and this does not mean that whatever the consumers tell us becomes law but it helps us to do more research and find out what the problems are.

Of course, public consultation has huge impacts on what we finally do but as always, it must be balanced and evidenced with good practice,” Amadi noted.

Speaking further, he explained that: “NERC can guarantee that the process we are undertaking is not just a ritual or hollow routine. This is a real search for a tariff regime that will enable investors recover their prudent costs and at the same time provide strong incentives for quality service for consumers.”

He disclosed that the regulator will in every tariff framework it approves for the Discos, include enforceable ‘service level agreements’, and that any Disco that fails to the meet up with the agreement will lose its rights to such approved tariff.

Accordingly, the submissions made by the Discos showed that they had proposed sweeping increase in their current charges to consumers. For example, Abuja Disco with its current averag

Road accidents kill 1.25 million people each year, Africa deadliest: WHO

Some 1.25 million people are killed in traffic accidents around the world each year, with Africa by far the continent with the most dangerous roads, the World Health Organization said in report published Monday.

"Road traffic fatalities take an unacceptably high toll, particularly on poor people in poor countries," WHO chief Margaret Chan said in a statement.

The UN health agency's Global Status Report on Road Safety showed that the situation is improving, with the number of deaths remaining stable in recent years even as the number of cars and other vehicles on the road has increased rapidly.

But traffic accidents are still the leading cause of death among 15- to 29-year-olds worldwide and cost governments on average about 3.0 percent of their annual gross domestic products, the report showed.

And while many countries have stepped up efforts to improve the situation, including law changes and making vehicles and roads safer, many poorer nations especially are lagging far behind.

A full 90 percent of global road traffic deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, even though they count only 54 percent of the world's vehicles.

The death rate in Africa is particularly high, counting 26.6 annual traffic deaths for every 100,000 citizens, compared with 9.3 in Europe, where the death rate is the lowest.

"We're moving in the right direction," Chan said, noting that "the report shows that road safety strategies are saving lives."

"But it also tells us that the pace of change is too slow," she added.

Nearly half of all those killed in traffic are either walking or on two wheels, Monday's report showed, with pedestrians accounting for 22 percent of all deaths, motorcyclists making up 23 percent, and cyclists four percent.

Africa is particularly deadly for pedestrians and cyclists, who make up 43 percent of all road traffic deaths on the continent, according to the report.

"Decision makers need to rethink transport policies," said Etienne Krug, head of WHO's disability, violence and injury prevention unit, warning that "the lack of policies aimed at vulnerable road users is killing our people and harming our cities."

Monday's report found that road safety had improved significantly in countries with laws regulating five risk factors: speed, drunk driving, and the use of helmets, seatbelts and child seats.

Over the last three years, 17 countries, with a total of 409 million inhabitants, have adopted laws in at least one of these areas in line with international best practices, it said.

WHO recommends that maximum speed in urban areas should be set no higher than 50 kilometres (31 miles) per hour.

But only 47 countries, representing 950 million people, respect that recommendation, the report found.

The report also stressed the importance of banning drunk driving, noting that only 34 countries, with a total population of 2.1 billion, follow WHO recommendations to limit permitted blood alcohol levels to below 0.05 grammes, and for younger drivers to 0.02 grammes.

"Twenty-one of these countries are in the European region, suggesting the need to extend good practice globally," the report said.

As for helmet use, WHO would like to see it made mandatory for all two-wheel users, including children, but only 44 countries, with some 1.2 billion inhabitants, currently have such laws on the books.

A full 161 countries meanwhile have national seatbelt laws, and 105 of them, representing 4.8 billion people, meet best practices by requiring that the life-saving belts are fastened both in the front and back seats.

Monday's report also found that vehicles sold in 80 percent of the world's countries fail to meet basic safety standards.

Following years of sexual abuse as a child, Ms Raiford found comfort in sweet, sugary snacks and secret eating.By the age of 12, she was so big that her mum had to start making her clothes as shops did not stock sizes large enough.
Aged 14, and weighing 32 stone, Ms Raiford was admitted to a psychiatric home for eight months to help her deal with her overeating.
Soon she did not leave her home. She would spend her days eating and avoiding people. She was unable to move around easily, lost her job and had to move back in with her mum.

Five years followed where she was bedbound. Her mum would bring her food and a cousin would empty a bed pan for her.
Instead, she’d spend long days on the internet lying to men about her appearance .

“It was the worst time of my life,” she said. “I just wanted to die. Each day I’d just eat and go online from morning to night.”

In December 2003, she started having breathing difficulty.Desperate for medical help, emergency services were called.
A wall of her home had to be bulldozed to get her out and a mortified Ms Raiford was transported to hospital on the back of a flatbed truck.

“It was the worst thing that had ever happened to me,” she said. “But it was the thing that saved me.”

 She said

"I just need the operation to help finish the process I’ve started and improve my health.”

PHOTO: Couple Defraud Business Man By Lying That His Late Son Has A Child Alive

A couple in the coal city has fallen into police net for worsening the trauma of Benjamin Eneje, a
businessman, whose 28-year-old son, Paschal Eneje, was murdered in cold blood, very close to his house, on April 19, 2014, at Nsude, Udi Local Government Area, Enugu State.

In January this year, Okechukwu Emeka, 37, cooked up a story and sent a text message to Eneje with intent, as the police alleged, to deceive and extort money from him, by claiming that he knew the person who killed his son, adding that the killer was residing in Uwani, Enugu city. In the text message, he pretended to be a woman and told the grieving father that before Paschal was gruesomely murdered, he had impregnated “her” and that “she” later gave birth to a baby boy, who was already four months old. Seeing a glimmer of good coming out of the sad end of his only son, Eneje was excited at the prospect of getting some comfort from nurturing his grandson. So he requested that a picture of the child be sent to him.

Promptly, Emeka sent a picture of his own four-month-old son, through Whatsapp to Eneje, who requested to discuss with the supposed mother of his late son’s child. Quickly, Emeka recruited his wife, 35-year-old Destiny, to act as the lady, who was impregnated by late Paschal and mother of the boy.

Emeka called Eneje and passed the phone to his wife, who regaled the heartbroken man with a convincing tale of how she met and fell in love with his son. She spoke glowingly about Paschal and the baby boy. The spider web tale apparently touched the man and he agreed to provide to her with financial support, to care for his “grandson.” From that day, the couple began to push him for money.

In a chat with Sunday Sun, Eneje narrated his encounter with the couple, which corroborated what the couple said. He added: “I believed what the lady told me. I thanked her letting me know the story. And I promised to take care of her and the baby boy. I even connected her to my wife in London. She began to chat with my wife on Whatsapp.”

My wife asked for a picture of the baby boy, which was sent to her in London, through Whatsapp. At this point, they made a request for N500,000 for the upkeep of the baby boy. We agreed and I sent them N350,000 naira.

Later, I asked the woman to bring the baby to Enugu, for us to see him. She said I should send them money for air-tickets. At this point, I became suspicious and reported the matter to Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mr Mohammed Adamu and detectives from the command started trailing them.”

Adamu told Sunday Sun that his men eventually laid ambush for them in Port Harcourt. And then moved to arrest them on September 23, 2015, at Rumuigbo, a suburb of the garden city. Eneje said he was shocked to the marrow when he saw the suspects.

His words: “When they were arrested and I saw them, I was shocked to see that the husband of the woman was Okechukwu Emeka, a staff working in my oil service firm.”

When Okechukwu Emeka spoke with Sunday Sun, he confessed to the crime. His wife added that she and her husband used the money they got from Eneje to meet their living expenses and pay their children’s school fees. As their cookie had crumbled, the couple have been begging Eneje to forgive them, lamenting that poverty and greed led them into the alleged crime.

However, the police boss has assured that the couple would have a day in court soon.

UK Government Urges Africa To Pioneer Solar Revolution

The United Kingdom Government has said that Africa can pioneer a solar revolution saying that a reliable solar power systems can help some of Africa’s poorest to cope with the continent’s chronic power shortages.

Speaking through the Minister of State for Africa, Mr Grant Shapps during a tour of solar energy facilities backed by the UK Government in Lagos, he called for international backing of solar energy projects to speed up access across the continent.

He said that more than half of the population of Nigeria have no access to electricity. Per head of the population, Nigeria’s energy access is one of the lowest in the world.

Grant Shapps said: “Blackouts and costly generators are a daily reality for millions of Nigerians. Many more simply have no access to energy and rely on candles or Kerosene. This is holding back an entire nation and continent from reaching its full potential.

“We simply cannot wait for full national grids to show up one day. The technology, expertise and knowledge to fix this is available and is ready to be deployed right now.

“So we’re going to harness this opportunity and get more people into this exciting energy market. Next week I will bring together African politicians, investors and solar experts in London to kickstart our Energy Africa campaign to bring power to millions of people.”

Agreed in New York last month, the UN’s new Global Goals made a commitment to provide universal energy access in Africa by 2030. On the current trajectory, this will not be achieved until 2080.

During his visit, Minister for International Development Shapps visited a Lagos health clinic run entirely by solar energy.

Registering 60,000 ante-natal patients every year, the centre only had two hours of electricity every day before the panels were installed last year. This severely limited their ability to treat patients. Drugs could not be safely stored in refrigerators, the laboratory stopped and births at night had to rely on candles or kerosene lamps, increasing the risk of complications or ill health.
