80 Boko Haram insurgents surrender to soldiers



The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, said on Thursday that 80 members of the violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram, had surrendered to the troops of the Nigerian Army in Borno State.

Those who surrendered, the Army spokesman said, included Boko Haram commanders, foot soldiers and suppliers of logistics.

Usman said in a statement that those who surrendered had been confirmed to have participated in several attacks in Bama, Borno State.

Obiano pardons man after 25 years in jail



The Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, on Thursday, released a man who had spent 25 years behind bars.

He also released 24 others to mark this year’s independence anniversary.

A prison official, who pleaded anonymity, told our correspondent that the man, whose further particulars were not disclosed, had been in prison since 1990.

Fifteen dead, 20 wounded in shooting at Oregon community college -media


At least 15 people were killed and another 20 wounded at a shooting on Thursday at a community college in Roseburg, Oregon, media reported.

CNN said the shooter had been detained.

A spokeswoman for the Douglas County Sheriff's department confirmed to Reuters that there was a shooting at the Umpqua Community College campus in Roseburg. The spokeswoman had no further details.

Thirty-five-year-old Nelson, who stabbed his father, Sunday Oamen, to death, in Abesan Estate, in the Ipaja area of Lagos State, has said he did it because his father always scolded him.
Oamen, who is currently being detained at the State Department of Criminal Investigation, Yaba, told PUNCH Metro on Wednesday that he had smoked four wraps of Indian hemp before committing the crime.

Buyers of preregistered SIM cards face jail term



The Nigerian Communications Commission on Wednesday warned telecommunication subscribers against buying preregistered Subscriber Identification Module cards.

The Acting Executive Vice Chairman, NCC, Prof. Umaru Danbatta, who spoke at the ongoing Abuja International Trade Fair, said selling, buying and using preregistered SIM cards was punishable by imprisonment.

The NCC boss, who was represented at the event by the Assistant Director, Public Relations, Mr. Reuben Muoka, said the use of preregistered SIM cards by criminal elements to perpetuate crimes in the country was unacceptable.

Senate President, Bukola Saraki, on Wednesday received the ministerial nominees list at about 4:56pm from the Presidency but said the content of the presidential communication would be read on Tuesday.

The Senate had adjourned plenary at 2:00pm on Wednesday till Tuesday, October 6.

Sources said 21 names were contained in the list.

List of 83 senators who passed vote of confidence on Senate President, Saraki



The Senate resumed plenary Tuesday, after a six-week recess, with members passing a vote of confidence on Senate President Bukola Saraki.

Mr. Saraki was arraigned last week before the Code of Conduct Tribunal over a 13-count charge of false declaration of assets slammed on him by the Federal Government.

In a motion that came under matter of urgent importance, David Umaru (APC-Niger East), led 82 other senators to give Mr. Saraki a stamp of approval and asked that the leadership of the Senate should not be “intimidated and harassed”.

Tales of woes on Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene road



THE plight of commuters and motorists plying the Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene federal highway worsened on Monday evening as most of them were made to spend hours at failed portions of the road.

Ngbede Omale has confessed to Benue State Police Command how he secretly killed his friend, Agabaidu Omale and buried him in a shallow grave.

Narrating how he committed the crime to Daily Sun at the State Police Headquarters where he is presently cooling his heels, Ngbede said he had a heated argument with his friend in the farm which resulted into a fight.

61-year-old guard rapes two sisters in Lagos, gives them N200

                         
       
The police in Lagos are on the trail of a security man, identified only as John, who allegedly raped two sisters for several weeks in the Anthony area of Lagos.


Punch Metro learnt that 61-year-old John reportedly gave the sisters, Comfort and Precious (not real names), the sum of N200 to appease them each time he raped the girls.

Moon's big show, but Earth stays put


The rare sighting of the "blood moon" or "supermoon" by millions of people yesterday morning did not turn out to be the end of the world after all.
The phenomenon, which last occurred in 1982, is when the full moon is in close proximity to the Earth - a so-called supermoon - and is combined with an eclipse of the moon.

This creates a reddish glow around the moon.

Prior to the sighting some religious leaders claimed the phenomenon would herald the beginning of the apocalypse.

Benin, Togo beg Nigeria for more electricity



The governments of Benin and Togo on Monday called for an increase in the amount of electricity, which their countries receive from Nigeria.

They specifically requested the Nigerian electricity supply industry to increase the amount of power sent to them from 200 megawatts to 300MW.

A CONVICTED murderer who raped a 10-year-old girl said he would never have committed the crimes if people had noticed his electronic tag wasn't working.

David Renz said in his testimony he took off his bracelet "10 to a dozen times" and left his home without hearing a peep from federal authorities.
He has now been sentenced to life in prison.
Asked if he could have carried out the attack if the tag had been working, he said: "Most likely not."
He was supposed to wear the bracelet at all times as a condition of his release on bail on federal child porn charges.

5 confirmed dead,17 rescued in Ikorodu boat mishap

                           

Lagos State government yesterday said five of the 20 passengers and two crew members of a commercial boat belonging to the Bayeku Ferry Association travelling from Oke Ira Nla, Ajah to Bayeku in Ikorodu who were earlier rushed to a hospital, died while 17 others were rescued alive.

Nigerian Man Who Returned From Brazil For Wedding Arrested With Cocaine In Lagos

                                                

The suspect, 39-year-old Okpue Ernest Ifeanyi came to Nigeria from Brazil for his traditional wedding, but was arrested by operatives of the Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for being possession of suspected wraps of cocaine.

Ifeanyi confessed that he was paid N400,000 to take 59 wraps of cocaine to Nigeria. He said that he decided to take the deal because he wanted to add more money to his already planned wedding.

Woman Brutalises, Hides 13-year-old Bleeding Maid from Police

                                           
The police in Lagos have arrested a woman, Esther Bello, for allegedly brutalising her 13-year-old househelp, identified simply as Titi, in the Obanikoro area of Lagos.


Punch Metro gathered that Bello, a trader, allegedly hid the girl in a room and told policemen from the Pedro division, who were alerted by the neighbours, that the maid had travelled to Ikorodu area with a friend.

Soldiers destroy Boko Haram’s fuel depot



The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, has said that the troops involved in the ongoing campaign against the insurgents have discovered and dismantled a major Boko Haram’s fuel depot.

Usman said in a statement on Thursday that the troops found the fuel depot at Ladu Bumbawa Ward of Guzamala Local Government Area of Borno State.

Pastor claiming to be 'driving out a death demon' gets 30 years for raping teen



According to myzimbabwe.co.zw, 33-year-old Greatness Tapfuma was convicted of two counts of rape.

The pastor, who was acquitted of raping two other congregants, will serve an effective 25 years in jail after five years were suspended on condition that he does not within that period commit a similar crime.

Magistrate Mberewere ruled that although Tapfuma's victim tested HIV positive, there was no evidence that Tapfuma is the one who infected her.

UPDATE: 220 dead in hajj stampede in Saudi Arabia

                            
                                  
Saudi Arabia civil defence has confirmed that the death toll in Thursday’s stampede has risen to 220, with over 500 injured.

The pilgrims were killed in a crush at Mina, outside the Muslim holy city of Mecca, where some two million people are performing the annual haj pilgrimage, Saudi Arabia’s al-Ekhbariya television reported.

Tragedy struck on Sunday in Tarkwa Bay, on the Lagos Island area of Lagos State, after a 30-year-old Beninoise, Samuel Francis, stabbed to death 35-year-old Clement Houme, during a scuffle for a birthday pig.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Samuel had been contracted by a relative of the deceased, identified as Victoria, to kill the pig for her birthday celebration.On arriving at the Abule area with his brother, Jeff Francis, the deceased was reported to have challenged them on where they got the pig from.
Huome reportedly accused them of stealing the pig.

Smoking, alcohol, obesity tar Europe's bill of health: WHO


"Alarming" rates of smoking, alcohol consumption and obesity in Europe could mean the next generation live shorter lives, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned.


While Europeans are living longer than ever before, increases in life expectancy and declines in premature mortality may "flatten off" if the three big lifestyle risk factors are not dealt with, a senior WHO director said.

In a report on the region's health, the WHO said there remain "unacceptably high" differences in life expectancy between countries, with an 11-year gap between the highest and lowest.

Oshiomhole, who spoke with journalists on Wednesday, however, accused a former governor of Bayelsa State and chieftain of the APC, Mr. Timipre Sylva, of hijacking the primary.
