Two policemen paraded for robbery, impersonation

                         

The Anambra State Police Command on Wednesday paraded two policemen and 25 others for various offences. The two policemen ─ Corporal Peter Ilo and Constable Nicholas Ogbuanu ─ were paraded for alleged armed robbery and impersonation, respectively.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ali Okechukwu, at the command headquarters in Amawbia, said Ilo, who was serving at the Oguta Police Division in Imo State was arrested on August 20 along with suspected members of his gang ─ Ekenne Ohanusi and Benjamin Obinwanne ─ in connection with several cases of armed robbery, including the snatching of a Lexus jeep at the Ozubulu area of the state on June 5.

Abduction: Police Nab Man Trying To Sell 3-year-old Girl



he Taraba State Police Command has arrested a 51-year-old man for allegedly kidnaping a three-year-old girl.

Briefing journalists yesterday in Jalingo, the acting commissioner of police in the state, Mr. Bello Ahmad said that the suspect, Dalibi Tanko, was arrested by a team of policemen at Mallam Abba ward, Mutun Buyi, while he was trying to sell the girl to one Uba Idris Shagarda of Jantaro village.

In a bid to revamp the education sector in the state, the Katsina State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) today directed primary school teachers and all head teachers in the state to withdraw their children from private schools for immediate enrollment in public schools.

The Managing Director of the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority, NSIA, Mr. Uche Orji, has expressed shock over the allegation by Edo State governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, that N140 billion was spent on the consultancy for the Second Niger Bridge.

The MD disclosed in Abuja, yesterday, that only $2.21 million dollars (about N340 million, using the then exchange rate of N154/$1) was spent on the consultancy for that project.

2 Suicide Bombers Attack Checkpoint, Kill NAF Officer In Maiduguri



An officer of the Nigerian Air Force was feared killed last night by two suspected Boko Haram suicide bombers who launched an attack on a military checkpoint in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

According to security sources, a young girl who was with the soldiers at the checkpoint was lucky to survive the attack, even as she is currently being attended to by medics at a Maiduguri hospital.

Inspector shoots self dead in Lagos



The atmosphere at the Mobile Police Force 20, in the Ikeja area of Lagos, had been tense since Tuesday after a police inspector, identified simply as Medugwu, mistakenly shot himself dead, while adjusting a faulty rifle.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the inspector, who was attached to MOPOL 20, was the second-in-command to the armourer. He was said to have accidentally pulled the trigger of the rifle, which sent a bullet to his jaw.

Our correspondent gathered that on Tuesday, at about 10am, a policeman had brought the faulty rifle to Medugwu to examine and readjust for him.

Lagos under siege, says Deeper Life


The Deeper Christian Life Ministry has said that Lagos State is under siege and needs urgent divine intervention.
The ministry said the high rate of robbery, cultism, drug abuse and corruption, among other ills, could have totally destroyed the state, but for God’s grace.

The church stated this on Wednesday at Gbagada, Lagos, while announcing a city-wide crusade, organised by the ministry in conjunction with the Christian Association of Nigeria and the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria.

Lagos shuts 2 Redeemed Churches, 20 other religious centres

The Lagos State Government shut down 22 religious houses, including two churches belonging to the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG and three companies over various environmental offences on Wednesday.

The General Manager of Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Mr. Ademola Shabi said the state government took the decision after inspecting some of the facilities that violated the state’s environmental law in different parts of the state.

A police officer attached to Orile Division died in a motor accident opposite Fatgbems Filling Station, along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway at about 9a.m., yesterday.

It was learned that the deceased, while attempting to apprehend a commercial bus (Danfo) driver, who was picking up passengers along the road, jumped into the moving bus with number plates KJA305XL.
The bus sped off, while trying to escape, and hit another car with number plates LND340DF. The sudden stop made the policeman, who was hanging on the bus, to fall.

Mobil pumps N160bn into NDDC in 14 years



Mobil Producing Nigeria (MPN), a subsidiary of ExxonMobil, says it has contributed N160 billion to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) since its inception in 2001.

The MPN Manager, Media and Communications, Mr Ogechukwu Udeagha, disclosed this in Uyo on Wednesday at a two-day capacity building workshop for newsmen in Akwa Ibom.

The workshop, which was sponsored by Mobil, has the theme: “Professionalism, media ethics and responsibility in sustaining democracy and deepening oil and gas operations reportage.”

An angry Ekiti businessman Muyiwa Owolabi, has dragged his wife, Tinuola, to an Ado Ekiti Customary Court to seek dissolution of their ten-year-old marriage over “serial adultery with several men” she met on social media platform Facebook and Whatsapp.

Nollywood Actress, Shan George has joined veteran actor, Lari Williams on the need to investigate the Nigerian film industry.

It would be recalled that some days ago, Lari Williams urged President Muhammadu Buhari to probe the $200million released to the creative industry in Nigeria by the immediate past president, Goodluck Jonathan.
This forced a statement out of the Bank of Industry, which claimed the money was never released to them by the last administration.

A landlord in the Idumota, Lagos Island area of Lagos State, Sola Solomon, has allegedly poured petrol and set fire to one of his tenants, identified simply as Abeeb, aka Ogbon.

PUNCH Metro learnt that as the victim struggled to put out the flames, the 67-year-old landlord pushed him down from the top floor of the three-storey building.

The father of one was said to have landed with a thud, as the flames ate through his body.
Our correspondent was told that Abeeb had barely spent five months in the house located on Iga Idunganran Street, Idumota, when he was killed.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the incident was caused by a disagreement over the use of the compound toilet.

NERC denies abolishing meter fixed charge

The Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), has denied abolishing fixed charge on electricity consumers’ meters in the country.

Its Chairman, Dr. Sam Amadi said the fixed charge cannot be removed with executive fiat.

He said: “Fixed charge has not been removed. A regulator does not remove something by executive fiat. It has to go through a process.’’

Rivers tribunal: 16 senators, Reps petition Buhari



Sixteen senators and members of the House of Representatives from Rivers State on Tuesday petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari over alleged interferences by security agencies in the hearing of cases before the state election petition tribunal.

The lawmakers singled out the “State Security Services” and the “Nigerian Army” as security agencies the President should call to order to forestall a possible “injustice” in the prosecution of the cases.
Among the petitioners were Senator George Sekibo and Mrs. Betty Apiafi, both of the Peoples Democratic Party.
The petitioners complained to Buhari that soldiers and the Department of State Services operatives had allegedly aligned with the All Progressives Congress to appear before the tribunal to testify.
They appealed to the President to halt the trend in order not to soil the integrity of his administration and his promise to be fair to all Nigerians.

Arik Air Staff Caught With Cocaine In London, NDLEA Starts Investigation -

                                 

A male cabin crew member of popular aviation company, Arik Air, who has been identified as Chika Egwu Udensi was on Monday night arrested at Heathrow Airport, London, by the United Kingdom Border Force for allegedly possessing items suspected to be 2.76 kilogramme of cocaine.

According to Arik Air spokesman, Mr. Ola Adebanji, the company is presently carrying out private investigations to determine how the cabin crew member came about the banned substance. Adebanji also said Arik Air will cooperate fully with UK authorities and other appropriate agencies in their investigations.

A middle-aged woman, Toyin Akinrosotu, was on Monday arrested by the police in Idanre, Ifedore Local Government Area of Ondo State, after allegedly causing the fatal fall of an infant strapped on the back of its mother.
A witness said the baby fell during a scuffle between the mother of the baby and the suspect.

He said the suspect, who lives at Awolata Street in Idanre, led some thugs to beat up the mother of the dead baby in her house.

Husband-Snatching Saga: NJC Queries Justice Olamide Oloyede

                                

The NJC issued the query dated July 28, 2015 and with reference number, NJC/S.29/HC.OS/16/1/55.

Oloyede came to prominence recently after she submitted a petition to the Osun State House of Assembly calling for the removal of Aregbesola on the grounds of his alleged financial misappropriation.

The Federal Government has directed the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to retrieve forthwith all valid diplomatic and official passports from all persons who are not entitled to hold such documents.

This is contained in a statement by Mr Yusuf Isiaka,the Director of Press, Federal Ministry of Interior, on Monday in Abuja.

Mandela lawyer looking for key witness in rape case


A missing statement from a key witness has allegedly hampered the case of Nelson Mandela's 24-year-old grandson.

The witness is said to have overheard Mandela and a teenage girl talking before the alleged rape took place.

According to Sunday Sun, Nico Swart who is representing Mandela, told the court he needed more time to find the witness who could bolster Mandela's claim that the sex was consensual.

Pandemonium as drunk Naval rating shoots 3 in Ikorodu


There was pandemonium yesterday at Majidun area of Ikorodu as a Naval personnel allegedly shot three persons, leaving them in a critical condition.

Vanguard gathered that the incident occurred around 3p.m. at Tipper Park, when the Naval personnel, suspected to have been drunk, allegedly left his duty post to unwind and, thereafter, visited the park where he was playing with his gun, which went off and injured the three persons, who were going about their businesses at the park.
