Don’t expect 24-hour electricity, distribution company tells Nigerians

Following consumers’ protests against power failure, an electricity distribution company (DISCO) has told Nigerians not to expect 24-hour supply of electricity any time soon.

The Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), which made the declaration yesterday, said the hopeless situation is due to low generation of megawatts by the generation companies (GENCOs).

The Head, Corporate Affairs of BEDC for Edo, Delta Ondo and Ekiti states, Curtuis Nwadei, said in spite of the 9 per cent allocation from the national grid, the zone also grapples with the problem of high indebtedness from both state and federal government agencies, including military and paramilitary agencies, energy theft and assaults on its staff.

Nwadie, who spoke in Benin, however said that BEDC had commissioned over 20 injection sub-stations and took delivery of over 400 transformers to improve on it services to the states under its jurisdiction.

38 die in Rivers after consuming local gin

No fewer than 38 persons have died in Rivers State after consuming locally made gin.

The tragic incident occurred barely twomonths after a similar one in Ode-Irele, Ondo State, where 18 people died in April after consuming locally made gin.

The Permanent Secretary of Rivers State Ministry of Health, Dr. Somieari Isaac-Harry, confirmed the incident in a chat with newsmen in Port Harcourt, the state capital, yesterday.

Isaac-Harry said 42 cases had so far been recorded. Of the number, he said, 29 are males and nine females while four others survived.

Tariq Aziz, the debonair Iraqi former deputy prime minister who made his name by staunchly defending Saddam Hussein to the world during three wars and was later sentenced to death as part of the regime that killed hundreds of thousands of its own people, has died in a hospital in southern Iraq, officials said. He was 79.

Aziz died yesterday after he was taken to the al-Hussein hospital in the city of Nasiriyah, about 320 kilometers southeast of Baghdad, according to the provincial governor, Yahya al-Nassiri. Aziz had been in custody in a prison in the south, awaiting execution.

WAEC Won’t Adopt CBT Now –Official

Examinations Council (WAEC) on Tuesday said that it would not adopt the Computer Based Test (CBT) mode fully for now, considering the variables involved in conducting its examinations.

WAEC’s Head of National Office (HNO), Dr Charles Eguridu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the CBT mode being demanded by some people was not feasible for now.

NAN reports that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) had, during its 2015 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) recently, migrated fully to the CBT mode.

23 vehicles, 30 shops burnt in Lagos fire

MANY were yesterday drenched in tears as they mourned their losses in a massive midnight fire.

There were rows of shops and vehicles consumed by the fire, which occurred after a petrol tanker fell and spilled its content.

The scene of ruination was Iyana-Ipaja in Agbado Oke Odo Local Council Development Area (LCDA). No lives were lost in the incident.

Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode arrived at the scene of the incident around 9:45 am. He commiserated with the victims of the fire and promised that the government will help the owners of the burnt homes and shops within 48 hours.

Tragedy struck on Sunday evening in Onitsha as no fewer than 69 persons burnt to death when a trailer loaded with Premium Motor Spirit otherwise known as petrol, which was descending from Army barracks side of Onitsha Enugu express way lost control and rammed into the Asaba Motor Park at Upper Iwekas Onitsha and exploded.

Eleven vehicles mostly commuter buses and two motorcycles inside the Asaba Park in Onitsha, including the 40 foot tanker laden with petrol burnt beyond repairs inside the park.

New mothers can significantly reduce their babies’ risk of developing childhood leukemia by breast-feeding them, according to a new study.

Children and teens who were breast-fed for at least six months were 19% less likely to be diagnosed with leukemia compared with kids who nursed for six months or less, researchers reported Monday in the journal JAMA Pediatrics.

Six centralBank of Nigeria (CBN) officials and 16 others from some commercial banks are to face trial for alleged N8 billion fraud, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Murder Of NURTW Boss Triggers Protest In Ilorin

Transporters under the aegis of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) yesterday barricaded Ilorin/Ajase- Ipo highway in Kwara State to protest the alleged killing of their chairman by a police officer.
