Beckham backs Figo’s FIFA bid
David Beckham has backed his former Real Madrid team-mate Luis Figo’s bid to become the next FIFA president.
The 42-year-old former Portugal international and world footballer of the year announced last month that he would stand against current president of Sepp Blatter, Sky Sports reports.
As well as going up against Blatter in May’s election, Figo, the only former player standing, also faces competition from Jordan’s Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein and Dutch FA president Michael van Praag for the role.
Former England captain Beckham said he would support Figo’s campaign to lead world football’s governing body and said the FIFA needed candidates “passionate about the game.”
Jega: I can’t guarantee polls’ll hold on March 28
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof Attahiru Jega, on Wednesday, reiterated his preparedness to conduct the general elections as scheduled but maintained that only the military could guarantee the sanctity of the March 28 and April 11 dates. Jega, who appeared before the Senate to explain the level of INEC’s preparedness for the elections, however, stunned many of the lawmakers when he revealed that one million Permanent Voter Cards had yet to be received by the commission from the manufacturers.
