Moody and sluggish? Blame your sugary diet

Assorted sugary foods

On the average, a healthy person is not only active, he also has sunny attitude towards life. This is because, as mental health experts say, being healthy isn’t just the absence of diseases, it is also about being stable emotionally and psychologically.

However, physicians say many people report being moody and sluggish, even when they don’t mean to. The culprit, they contend, has to do with their diet which, clinicians say, is rather too sugary for comfort.

Family physician, Dr. Mary Ogbe, says sugary diets leave harmful effects on metabolism and contribute to all sorts of diseases, hence the admonition for people to go easy on sweet foods that are so common these days.

orexin, which helps you to be awake when you should. They warn that when you eat sugar, this chemical is inhibited and that is when you feel sluggish, sleepy or moody.

Nutritionists say in order to counter this effect in your body, make sure you balance your sugar consumption with protein-rich food that will tackle the effects that the sugar you eat would have had on you.

“This is not to say that you have the open cheque to eat all the sugar you want; but since we take sugar anyway, it is also good to know how to counter its likely effect by eating healthy food that will level off sugar’s effect as the body digests it.

“If, for instance, you are taking a cup of sugar-containing tea with your food, it’s advisable that you complement it with protein-rich foods such as eggs, beans or any beans-based foods and such like. Your mood will be the better for it,” Ogbe says.

She expresses concern that most health-conscious adults actually want to avoid taking sugar altogether, but they fall victim to merchants’ lies, which give them the so-called alternatives to sugar. “These alternatives are, much of the time, not only sweeter than the sugar they try to avoid, but do more harm because they are laboratory grown!” Ogbe notes.

Such laboratory-grown sugar substitutes include demerara sugar, dextrose, agave nectar, corn syrup, beet sugar, barley malt syrup, galactose, lactose, malt syrup, etc.

Stress plays a part in moodiness and sluggishness, physicians say. When you’re undergoing a stressful situation, your stress hormone levels rise. The same chemicals also affect you when your blood sugar is low, researchers say.

Experts at atkins.com explain that, for instance, when you eat a piece of cake, your blood sugar will rise, and stress hormones such as adrenalin, cortisol or epinephrine are released.

“One of the main things these hormones do is to raise blood sugar, providing the body with a quick energy boost. The problem is, these helpful hormones can make us feel anxious, irritable and shaky,” Ogbe adds. And that’s when you become moody and sluggish, even when you wish to feel otherwise.

Beyond mood swing

Beyond its effects on our moods, nutritionists say sugary foods do worse stuffs to human body. A nutritionist, Dr. Dayo Umoh, says before sugar enters the bloodstream from the digestive tract, it is broken down into glucose and fructose — both of which are simple sugars.

“It is easy to get glucose in our diet, even though the human body also produces it. Indeed, glucose is present in every living cell. This is not the case with fructose, because the human body doesn’t produce it in any significant amount. That tells you humans don’t have any physiological need for it.”

Experts say the main issue with fructose is that it can only be metabolised by the liver. In lay man’s language, the liver processes the fructose you eat.

“This is not a problem if you eat a little bit as found in fruit, for instance. But when you eat too much of fructose, you’re giving your liver extra load of work to do, and when this happens, it will make the liver to turn the fructose into fat.

“When you repeatedly eat huge quantity of sugary foods, you can develop fatty liver and myriad of other serious health issues. By the way, fatty liver disease is a fore runner of liver failure, so you need to watch it. However, if your fructose is simply from fruits, you are on safe grounds, as you cannot overdose on fruits.

“That is why we also counsel our clients to eat organic fruits. This has become imperative in view of the fact that we import fruits these days and you can find assorted and esoteric fruits in high-end supermarkets.

“If you’re wondering what ‘organic’ fruits look alike, the way to recognise them, usually, is by their size. We are familiar with the size of guavas, for instance; but when you buy these inorganic fruits that have been modified genetically, they are bigger than their natural size as we knew them to be. Avoid such fruits,” Umoh submits.

Susceptibility to infection

Many people find themselves being susceptible to bacterial infections and they wonder why. The probable answer to this, Ogbe says, is that you eat too much sugar.

“Eating or drinking too much sugary foods inhibits the optimal functioning of immune system cells that otherwise defend the body against bacteria. Instead, eat more fruits and vegetables, because they are rich in nutrients such as vitamins C and E, beta-carotene and zinc, all of which work to strengthen your immune system and thus protect you from bacterial infections,” the physician counsels.

In conclusion, experts add that it is not necessary to cut off sugar from our diet entirely, unless otherwise advised by a physician for health reasons. Rather, they advise, those who feast regularly on sugary foods to reduce their sugar intake, while moderate users of sugar are still counseled to reduce it to the barest minimum.

“Sugar contains no nutrients, no protein, no healthy fats and no enzymes. This being the case, why should it kill you?” Ogbe asks rhetorically.

2015: Vote for my husband, Patience begs women

2015: Vote for my husband, Patience begs women

The wife of the President, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, on Monday in Abuja pleaded with Nigerian women to vote for her husband, President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2015 Presidential election.

According to her, only Jonathan can protect and defend their rights among all the aspirants for the seat.

She also asked women to actively participate in the on-going electoral processes in the country, saying it was time for them to compete favourably with their male counterparts for elective positions.

Ochekpe, made the remarks while declaring open a two-day National Conference on Women and Elections, with the theme, “Enhancing Opportunities for Women Candidates,” organised by the United Nations Development Programme in collaboration with the Federal Ministry for Women Affairs.

She asked the electorate not to yield to the advances of other aspirants, saying they could not guarantee their freedom.

“I want to once again, urge you to continue to give support to our dear President, who has shown that he is not only gender sensitive but believes in the power and capacity of women to bring about change in society. He has been doing his best to promote the interest of women in Nigeria. It is now time for us to show him our appreciation for all he has been doing as he seeks re-election, “she said.

While applauding the roles women were playing to positively transform the society, she noted that more Nigerian families were investing in girls’ education, saying the development would make women to be politically and economically independent.

She said, “It is gratifying that more families are today investing in girls’ education and there are pointers to the fact that in the nearest future, more women will be politically and economically independent.

“However, there is the need to create the enabling environment to enhance women active participation in all areas of development. We must as women begin to aggressively unite, network and build alliances across gender divide in order to secure meaningful change.”

In her speech at the occasion, the Women Affairs Minister, Hajia Zainab Maina, regretted that women were not being taken along in decision and law making.

She said, “The number in terms of female representation in Nigeria reflects the almost exclusion of women. With less than seven per cent representation in elective positions, Nigerian women are among the less represented women in any sense when critical decisions, especially law making and distribution of the country’s resources that have unprecedented impacts on their lives are made.”

Mississippi Supreme Court Sets Date to Hear Its First Same-Sex Divorce Case

Protestors opposed to same-sex marriage carry signs outside the Federal Court House in Michigan where plaintiffs April Deboer and her same-sex partner Jayne Rowse managed to overturn Michigan's ban on same-sex marriage in Detroit, Michigan in a ruling on Friday March 21, 2014. A temporary stay was granted on Saturday.

The state Supreme Court in Mississippi, where same-sex marriage is not recognized, will hear arguments Jan. 21, 2015, from a woman who has asked the state to recognize her gay marriage so that she can be granted a divorce.

Lauren Czekala-Chatham and Dana Ann Melancon, who married in California in 2008, cannot be granted a divorce in Mississippi due to the state's constitution and statutes, DeSoto County Chancery Judge Mitchell Lundy Jr. ruled last year.

"All same sex Mississippi couples lack a right to have their marriage recognized by the state regardless of whether newly arrived here, having lived here all their life or anywhere in between," The Associated Press quoted Assistant Attorney General Harold E. Pizzetta III as saying in briefs.

"Valid federal law grants states the right to choose whether to recognize marriages from other jurisdictions. States are not bound to import other states' laws or policy choices. They are, and forever have been, free to choose their own public policy, as Mississippi rightfully has done here."

Czekala-Chatham's attorney does not agree. "Lauren does not seek to be married — she seeks a divorce. Lauren does not complain of Mississippi's refusal to recognize her marriage to Dana on a going-forward basis. Her complaint is that Mississippi law relegates her to a declaration of voidness, when a party to an opposite-sex marriage in otherwise similar circumstances would be entitled to a divorce," the attorney was quoted as saying.

Federal judges started striking down state amendments and laws banning same-sex marriage as unconstitutional after the Supreme Court last June squashed a key part of the federal Defense of Marriage Act, or

35 states and the District of Columbia have legalized gay marriage or are about to do so, according to Pew Forum.

These states are: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals is the only federal appeals court to uphold state same-sex marriage bans, a ruling that applies to Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee. Due to this decision, the Supreme Court is expected to rule on the constitutionality of gay marriage bans soon.

Fifteen states have constitutional amendments banning gay marriage.

45 Killed in Suicide Attack at Afghanistan Volleyball Game, Just Days After Decision to Extend US Troops' Stay

bomb attack in Afghanistan, where a bomber detonated his explosive vest in a crowd of spectators during a volleyball game on Sunday. The attack occurred days after President Barack Obama extended the combat role of American soldiers in Afghanistan into 2015.

"It is an attack on sport itself and on the positive values it can bring to help build strong communities and foster peace and reconciliation around the world," International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach said in a statement, Reuters reported.

province governor's office affirmed that most of the casualties were civilians who had come to watch a tournament final, while another 50 people were wounded in the attack.

No one has immediately claimed responsibility for the bombing, though several sources have noted that the attack occurred days after Obama announced that 9,800 American combat troops will stay in the country at least for another year.

The New York Times reported on Friday that the White House administration was changing the plan that had originally set to keep the troops in Afghanistan only to help train local forces in their fight against Taliban jihadists.

A senior administration official insisted, however, that despite the extension of the combat role, offensive missions in Afghanistan will still be limited.

"We will no longer target belligerents solely because they are members of the Taliban," the official said. "To the extent that Taliban members directly threaten the United States and coalition forces in Afghanistan or provide direct support to Al Qaeda, however, we will take appropriate measures to keep Americans safe."

The U.S. and its international allies have been fighting jihadist presence in Afghanistan as part of the anti-terror Operation Enduring Freedom mission since 2001.

Internal debates have arisen, however, within the Obama administration about whether to focus on fulfilling Obama's promise to the American people to pull all combat troops from the Asian nation, or to ensure that the mission to drive out remnants of Al Qaida is fulfilled.

attack, the deadliest so far of 2014, was carried out in Paktika near the border with Pakistan, where the Taliban and other jihadist groups are waging a war against the U.S.-allied central government. The Haqqani militant group, which is active in the region, has been known to send young men to carry out suicide attacks on a regular basis.

Another major bomb attack in Paktika's Urgun district earlier this year killed 43 people, only a couple fewer than the current death toll from the volleyball game blast.

President Ashraf Ghani's administration has faced escalating violence this year as he took charge of the country, partly because of a security agreement he signed with the U.S.

Abdul Rashid Dostum, the first deputy president, has welcomed Obama's decision to extend the stay of American combat troops.

"The United States knows that the Afghan army needs more equipment, that the army are being killed in Taliban attacks," Dostum said Sunday.

Ghani has also signed another agreement with NATO, which will allow a total of 12,000 international troops to stay in Afghanistan for another year.

At least 100 killed in new massacre in east DR Congo

Democratic Republic of Congo in the latest massacre to shake the restive region, lawmakers told AFP on Monday.

The carnage took place on Thursday near Beni in the North Kivu province, where mainly Muslim Ugandan rebels have been blamed for killing more than 200 civilians in gruesome machete attacks since October.

“I have a figure of 95 bodies buried in a common grave,” as well as “nine others that were shown to authorities in a morgue,” opposition member of parliament Juma Balikwisha told AFP.

“We still don’t have a definitive toll. It lies between 70 and 100 people killed,” said Albert Baliesima, an MP for the parliamentary majority backing President Joseph Kabila.

The Civil Society of North Kivu, an NGO based in Beni, blamed rebels of the Allied Democratic Forces and National Army for the Liberation of Uganda (ADF-NALU) for the latest in a wave of massacres that began early in October.

However, regional officials who spoke to AFP said they did not know who carried out the killings in a region where the Congolese army (FARDC) and a UN special intervention force have been battling the ADF-NALU since January.

“We were told that the (FARDC) didn’t want people to go further into the bush,” where more bodies could yet be discovered, Baliesima added.

An administrative source in Beni said that the killings took place in four villages close together between the market town and the town of Mbau, 20 kilometres (12 miles) further north.

Reached by telephone, a local resident told AFP that 95 bodies picked up in the bush had been buried in the village of Tepiomba.

– ‘Decisive action’ –

North Kivu’s governor, Julien Paluku, said Friday that nine bodies had been taken to a morgue. The Civil Society of North Kivu said that at least 50 people had died, according to “one of the survivors”.

The population of Beni, a major trading centre and stronghold of the Nande ethnic group located 250 kilometres (155 miles) north of the provincial capital Goma, has accused the government and soldiers of doing nothing to protect local people.

The UN special envoy to the central African Great Lakes region, Said Djinnit, said in a statement Monday “that the worsening situation in the Beni area … calls for decisive action towards neutralising all negative forces in the DRC, as per the decisions of the regional leaders and the UN Security Council.”

President Kabila visited Beni at the end of October and publicly swore that the army was “going to win against the terrorists”, but his presence failed to prevent a massacre within the town.

Demonstrating residents on November 2 pulled down a statue of the president at the “Kabila roundabout” and burned the flags of the ruling coalition that supports him.

The ADF-NALU rebels, believed to number around 400, have hidden in the Ruwenzori mountains that straddle the border with Uganda since being driven out of their homeland by President Yoweri Museveni’s soldiers in 1995.

In their joint offensive, the Congolese army and troops of the special UN brigade appeared to make gains against the Ugandan insurgents until August, when the respected commander of FARDC troops suddenly died of a heart attack.

The rebels bounced back, but the combined forces renewed major operations against the insurgents in October. The brigade with the large UN mission in the DRC has an offensive mandate to tackle armed movements in the east, which has been a powder keg for more than 20 years.

Shocking 830,000 Nigerians Are Slaves

the world as the statistics show that one in every 200 residents is living in slavery.

According to the 2014 Global Slavery Index, 834,200 Nigerians are currently living in modern slavery.

According to the 2014 Global Slavery Index, 834,200 Nigerians are currently living in modern slavery.

Nigeria has one of the highest rates in the world as the statistics show that one in every 200 residents is living in slavery.

One of the aggravating factors for Nigeria is its human trafficking problem. According to the index:

“Boys are trafficked for forced labour in street vending, domestic service, mining, stone quarrying, agriculture, begging and other hazardous labour in the West African sub-region.”

“Trafficking is also prevalent within Nigeria, with impoverished children, women and the disabled, trafficked into forced labour in the domestic sector, the sex industry, stone quarries, agricultural industries, and for forced begging and forced marriage.”

“Many victims, especially children are transported from rural to urban areas.”

Nigeria comes 6th in the top ten list of countries with the most modern slaves and is preceded by RussiaUzbekistanPakistanChina and India and followed by the Democratic Republic of CongoIndonesiaBangladesh and Thailand.

The Walk Free Foundation, the human rights organization which published the report, also estimates that 35.8 million people are enslaved worldwide.

2015: Soyinka Advises Nigerians On Who To Vote

As Nigerians await the 2015 general elections to elect new leaders to run the affairs of the country at all levels of governance, Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has advised the citizenry on the type of leader to elect.

Speaking at the Ake Arts and Book Festival, an annual cultural event in his honour, which was held at the Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta in Ogun State from 18-22 November, 2014, Soyinka stated that Nigeria needs a non-corrupt leader at this point in her national history.

He said: “Nigeria needs a leader who is indifferent to material acquisition; one who is not ashamed of admitting his mistakes and has humility.”

The Nobel Laureate also condemned the air of right of incumbency which pervades Nigeria’s political sphere and the misuse of power which, he said, has entrenched “new patterns of inequality and injustice.’’

Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka.

While chronicling the socio-political events in Nigeria before and after independence, the celebrated writer observed that Nigeria still grapples with impunity and corruption just as it did under the military rule.

happened in post-Apartheid South Africa and the state of affairs in post-Biafran period in Nigeria, Soyinka remarked that Nigeria has not moved beyond that tumultuous event because the nation has not confronted some truths about her nationhood.

He charged Nigerians not to seek for perfection but sincerity in leadership.

Soyinka also paid tributes to Late Justice Kayode Esho, describing him as an incorruptible judge who did not succumb to pressure to subvert the course of justice.

He also eulogised great academics such as late economist, Prof. Ojetunji Aboyade whom he described as “an unusual Vice Chancellor” that contributed to nation building.

It would be recalled that the Lion and the Jewel author had recently in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital,
honoured with Doctor of Letters honorary degree at the University of Ibadan, also added that the Boko Haram sect was successfully taking over Nigeria because of the incompetence of the government and lack of genuine leadership.

16 North Carolina Judges Quit Following State's Legalization of Gay Marriage

(PHOTO: REUTERS/DAVIS TURNER)

Larry Ferri (R) and Brandi Morris (C) hold large rainbow flag as gay couples marry outside of Mecklenburg County Register of Deeds office in Charlotte, North Carolina, October 13, 2014. Monday was the first day that Mecklenburg County issued marriage licenses to gay couples. Two protesters were at the gathering, but pro-gay rights activists blocked

judges have either resigned or retired after gay marriage became legal in the state last month when a judge ruled that an amendment to the state's constitution banning same-sex marriage was unconstitutional.

In October, U.S. District Judge Max Cogburn of Asheville struck down the ban and ruled the amendment unconstitutional in response to a Charlotte-based lawsuit.

Reports from the administrative office of the courts note that "between the ruling on Oct. 10 and the end of the month, 16 magistrates left their jobs, but the state wouldn't release why they left," Time Warner Cable News-Charlotte reports.

The cable network added that it's "been able to determine that at least 10 of the 16 magistrates who left last month, did so because they will not perform same-sex marriages."

"The number of North Carolina magistrates who have resigned or retired early because of their opposition to performing same-sex marriages is higher than previously reported," TWC-Charlotte reports, adding that the judges are now required by law to perform same-sex marriages. ... "The court system reports there are 672 magistrates across the state, so only about 1.5 percent have left because of the same-sex marriage ruling."

In May 2012, North Carolina voters overwhelmingly passed a ballot initiative that added an amendment to their state constitution defining marriage as being between one man and one woman.

The New York Times reported in 2012 that the amendment passed by a margin of more than 20 percentage points with 500,000 people voting early, which was a "record for a primary in the state."

North Carolina's Republican Gov. Pat McCrory has said his administration is "moving forward with the execution of the court's ruling [lifting the ban on gay marriage] and will continue to do so unless otherwise notified by the courts," according to the CharlotteObserver.

Judges quitting over the striking down of the gay marriage ban is not the only example of resistance or stated opposition to the court decision. A few North Carolina counties have passed resolutions in support of the former ban and have asked the U.S. Supreme Court to hear an appeal.

Despite the Supreme Court's refusal to hear a wave of appeals in October, many believe that with the Sixth Circuit's recent upholding of multiple state level amendments banning gay marriage, the Court will have to rule on the issue.

Police: 3-year-old set fire that killed his family

In this photo provided by the Maine State Police, the remains of a mobile home in which four people died are cordoned

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A 3-year-old boy set a fire in the living room of his Maine mobile home this week, a blaze that would engulf the structure and kill himself, his mother and his twin siblings, police said Friday.
The fire early Thursday killed 28-year-old Norma Skidgel and her children, 2-year-old twins Mason and Madison Delisle and 3-year-old Trenton Delisle, who lived in the mobile home in Caribou, 300 miles north of Portland. The state fire marshal's office said in a statement that an investigation has determined Trenton Delisle lit the blaze when he "set fire to items in the living room" of the home.
State police spokesman Steve McCausland said the fire was likely started with a cigarette lighter. He said the nature of the items that the boy site afire was unclear.
Investigators said the mobile home had a pair of major safety hazards — there were no functional smoke detectors and a rear door was blocked by a large piece of polystyrene foam that was likely used for insulation.
Skidgel's sister, Amy Bouchard, also lived at the home with her two children and extinguished a fire Trenton set — a Bible in the kitchen stove — earlier Thursday morning, police said. Bouchard and her children were not home when it caught fire.
The four deaths highlight the need to educate children about fire safety at a young age, McCausland said.
"This is a sad tragedy," he said. "Resources were available to assist him but were never utilized."
A state study of Maine fires from 2001 to 2011 found that juveniles set 2,531 fires resulting in 14 deaths, 115 injuries and damages of more than $40 million, said State Fire Marshal Joe Thomas. Last year's number of juvenile fires was 276, he said.
Thomas said Aroostook County, where Caribou is located, provides resources to prevent juvenile-started fires through fire and police departments as well as mental health agencies. Families can also consult with the State Fire Marshal's Office in Augusta, he said.
"Juvenile firestarters are a huge problem in Maine and there are resources available throughout the state to counsel, educate and treat children fascinated by fire," Thomas said.
Bouchard left the mobile home Thursday morning to put one of her children on a bus at a nearby stop and found the home ablaze when she returned, police said. She suffered smoke inhalation while trying to get back into the home and was treated at a hospital, police said.
An autopsy Friday determined Skidgel and the twins died of smoke inhalation, police said. Trenton's autopsy was still underway, police said. The four deaths brought the total number of fire deaths in Maine to 25 for the year, the most since 1993.

Paedophilia Police Hunt For Man Who Performed Sex Act In Front Of Children

Police has released a CCTV image of the man they want for questioning in connection with the paedophilic act.

Police say this man is wanted for questioning about the incident. (British Transport Police)

Police in Britain are looking for a man who allegedly performed sex acts in front of teenage girl on a train in London.
The incident took place in broad daylight on the Liverpool Street to Shenfield train at 4pm on Saturday, November 8.  The girl was traveling with her parents and sat opposite the man in the train. It was during the trip that the man exposed himself before performing a sexual act in front of the young girl. The girl went over to tell her mother who was sitting at a different seat.
As the girl was reporting to her mum, the train pulled into a station where the man got off.
British Transport Police have released a CCTV image of a man they wish to speak to in connection with the incident. Detective Constable Michael Hatcher said: “Both mother and daughter were shocked by this incident".
“BTP has done a lot of work around incidents of unwanted sexual behaviour on the rail network, and we treat crimes such as this very seriously. I believe the man in the image we are issuing today can help with our investigation,” Michael Hatcher said.

Now former Playboy playmate accuses Bill Cosby of drugging and sexually assaulting her in 1970 - as his lawyer brands mounting accusations 'increasingly ridiculous'

Former playmate Victoria Valentino, now 71, claims Bill Cosby 'drugged her at Hollywood dinner in 1970, tried to rape her friend, then raped her instead'
She claims she didn't come forward because 'what credibility did I have?'
Cosby's lawyers blast the 16 sex abuse claims as 'increasingly ridiculous'
16 women including supermodel Janice Dickinson have come forward

A former playmate has become the 16th woman to accuse Bill Cosby of sexual assault as the legendary actor's lawyers continue to rebuff the allegations as 'increasingly ridiculous'.

Victoria Valentino claims Cosby, a regular at Hugh Hefner's club on the Sunset Strip, drugged her and a friend at dinner in Hollywood before driving them to a nearby apartment.

According to Valentino, now aged 71, she pulled Cosby away from her unconscious friend as he tried to rape her - provoking the entertainer to launch an attack on her instead.

The claims published by the Washington Post follow similar accounts by 15 women including supermodel Janice Dickinson and Law & Order star Michelle Hurd - that Cosby's lawyers have branded 'illogical'.

Latest claims: Former Playboy playmate Victoria Valentino says she was trying to stop Cosby from raping her unconscious friend when he turned on her after giving her a pill at dinner in Hollywood in 1970

Valentino said she never came forward because she felt she had no credibility.

It was only when she read Barbara Bowman's allegations against Cosby, now 77, that she decided - 44 years later - to come forward.

The alleged attack took place in February 1970, weeks after Valentino was introduced to Cosby by fellow Playmate Francesca Emerson.

Cosby, she says, sent a limousine to take her and a friend to dinner in Hollywood after meeting them weeks before.

At the end of the meal he allegedly fed both girls a pill and said: 'This will make us all feel better,' taking one himself.

Russian 'billionaire' Boris Berezovsky found dead in bath last year left nothing in his will after dying penniless

  • Russian oligarch Boris Berezovsky left estate worth nothing in the UK
  • He was found dead in March last year in ex-wife's £20million Ascot home
  • It is not known if the former tycoon had assets held in trusts or overseas

  • Russian oligarch Boris Berezovsky left an estate worth nothing in the UK after he was found hanged in mysterious circumstances.

The former tycoon, an outspoken critic of President Vladimir Putin, was once known as Russia’s second richest man, worth £1.9 billion.
He was found dead in March last year in a bathroom at his ex-wife’s £20 million home in Ascot, Berkshire, after a series of financial setbacks.

His family do not believe he killed himself, and a coroner recorded an open verdict.
Probate records reveal that he died without a will and left an estate valued at 'nil' in England and Wales.
It is not known if he had assets held overseas or in trust or joint-ownership which would not have been included in his estate.

His daughter Elizaveta Berezovskaya claimed at a two day inquest in Windsor last March that the Russian Government could have been behind his death.
A German forensic scientist, acting for his family, who examined autopsy photographs, said he did not believe Berezovsky had killed himself.

But police found no evidence of foul play and the inquest heard how he had spoken of suicide before his death. Another scientist also concluded he had not been murdered.
The Berkshire coroner Peter Bedford recorded an open verdict, but said there was 'compelling evidence' of suicide due to Berezovsky's depression and financial problems.

The former tycoon, also known as Platon Elenin, lost a London High Court battle with Roman Abramovich, the Chelsea football club owner, just seven months before his death.

He lost a £1.8billion damages claim over rightful ownership of the oil group Sibneft and was also left with an estimated £100million legal bill.

Stephanie Okereke Actress’ Cousin Reportedly Arrested For Rape

Prince admitted to raping the girl and said the devil pushed him to the act. (Sun)

A cousin of Nollywood actress, Stephanie Okereke has been reportedly arrested for raping a 300 Level female student of the University of Lagos. The student named Arionla alleged that Prince Daniel Okereke raped her at his Mende home on Thursday, November 6.
Arionla, 22, told Sun that she and Prince Daniel became friends after meeting through an online dating website.
“We became friends online and I gave him my number. He kept calling, requesting to see me in school and I kept giving him one excuse or the other. He actually said that he wanted me to be his friend and I declined that I am a student and should be allowed to face my studies,” Arinola told Sun.
On that fateful day, Arionla said Prince Daniel called to inform her that he was in the school premises. Arionla said she told Prince that she was sick and he volunteered to drive her to the pharmacy to get drugs, a gesture that got her impressed. After buying the drugs, they drove to a fast food joint to grab a meal, but Prince Daniel asked her to join him to a sit out joint where she could relax to eat her meal only to drive her to his house in Mende, Maryland.
According to what Arionla told Sun,  the suspect, Prince Daniel Okereke, lured her into his home and subdued her with the aid of his security guard before pouncing on her and raping her severely.
“When we got to his house, I told him that I was not interested in having sex with him, he called two of his security guards to help him to tie me up and seal my mouth. He then brought out his belt and started flogging me,” Arionla narrated to Sun.
After several rape sessions which lasted for more than 30 minutes, Arionla revealed that Prince Daniel ordered her to pick her bags and get out of the house. Angry and bitter about her ordeal, Arionla said she started destroying the properties in his house.
According to the report,  angry neighbours of Prince Daniel who were not aware of what led to her destroying properties in the compound including a car, called the police from the Area F, Ikeja who arrested her for assault. With her statement to the police coupled with the bruises on her boy as evidence, a case of attempted rape was established and Prince Daniel was arrested but later released on bail while Arinola was admitted to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.
Suspecting that the case might be swept under the carpet due to Prince Daniel's connections- he is also the cousin of former DG of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, Ndi Okereke-Onyuike- Arinola and her family reported the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) Panti who rearrested Prince Daniel Okereke.
