Flights disrupted, passengers stranded at Sri Lanka airport after strike

Over 2,000 passengers were stranded at Sri Lanka’s main airport here for hours after several flights were disrupted due to a strike launched by employees seeking a salary hike.

Four passenger flights that have landed at the airport were kept waiting for several hours as the jet bridges cannot be connected for the passengers to disembark as a result of the strike, sources at the airport said.

The strike that was launched last evening has brought the operations at the Bandaranaike International Airport to a complete halt. According to airport officials, the baggage belts have stopped running and the arriving passengers have faced severe difficulties.
It was reported that about 2,000 passengers were waiting inside the airport for clearance.
Several flight departures were delayed leaving passengers stranded.

The strike was launched by Nidahas Sevaka Sangamaya employees, affiliated to the dominant party of the ruling Sri Lanka Freedom Party.
The strike was later called off. Deepal Perera, a trade union leader said they were demanding a rupees 10,000 pay hike.

“We hope to have discussions on our demand for 10,000 rupee salary increase”, Perera said.
The authorities accused the strikers of disconnecting electricity power supply at the airport.

This has forced the immigration officials to halt electronic operations and work manually, officials said.
The control tower of the airport was operating and could facilitate the landing of inbound flights although the departures are delayed, officials said.

The national carrier Sri Lankan Airlines said two outbound flights to Shanghai and London have been delayed.

Meanwhile, the British High Commission in Colombo advised travellers to check with the airlines before heading to the airport.

Saudi beheads Pakistani drug smuggler

Saudi Arabia beheaded a Pakistani on Wednesday for trafficking heroin hidden in his stomach into the kingdom, the interior ministry said, the latest in dozens of executions this year.

Mohammed Sadiq Hanif was arrested during his attempt to smuggle “a large amount” of heroin, the ministry said in a statement carried by the official SPA news agency.

Last month, Saudi authorities beheaded four Pakistanis convicted of smuggling heroin into the kingdom.

The beheading Wednesday in the eastern town of Khubar raises to 63 the number of death sentences carried out in the kingdom this year, despite international concern.

A United Nations independent expert called in September for an immediate moratorium on the death penalty in Saudi Arabia.

Christof Heyns, the UN special rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, said trials “are by all accounts grossly unfair” and defendants are often not allowed a lawyer.

He said confessions were obtained under torture.

Rape, murder, apostasy, armed robbery and drug trafficking are all punishable by death under Saudi Arabia’s strict version of Islamic sharia law.

Keshi Rejects Garba Lawal As Eagles' Coordinator

Less than two weeks after Stephen Keshi was restored as the head coach of the Super Eagles, latest reports indicate that the former Eagles’ captain and the Nigerian Football Federation, NFF, may have clashed once again.

Less than two weeks after Stephen Keshi was restored as the head coach of the Super Eagles, latest reports indicate that the former Eagles’ captain and the Nigerian Football Federation, NFF, may have clashed once again.

According to Guardian newspaper report, the latest clash between Keshi and the NFF is as a result of some appointments made by the new board of the football house while Keshi was relieved of his duty.

It was gathered that among the changes made while Keshi was sacked included the appointment of ex-international, Garba Lawal, as the Super Eagles’ team co-ordinator.

Emmanuel Attah was the co-ordinator of the Eagles before the Amaju Pinnick led NFF board appointed Lawal.

Investigation revealed that Keshi, who has overturned all appointments made by the NFF, has also asked that Lawal be replaced.

It  would be recalled that it was President Goodluck Jonathan that restored Keshi to his duty post as Super Eagles coach in preparation for the make or break qualifiers against Congo and South Africa.

Critics are of the opinion that Keshi’s refusal to work with his subordinates appointed by the NFF clearly shows that he is now more powerful than the NFF, his supposed employers.

A coach has the right to appoint his technical assistants, but the appointment of other backroom staff like team coordinator, media officer is the duty of the NFF, one of Keshi critics said.

However, it was no secret that Lawal was one of Keshi’s biggest critics following Eagles’ poor start to the 2015 Nations Cup qualifiers.

A source in the Eagle’s camp in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, informed that Keshi was not ready to work with Lawal as the team co-ordinator.

“Keshi is not the type to hold a grudge but I can tell you he wants Garba Lawal out,” a report by SL10.ng said.

“He is not asking for Emmanuel Attah (former team co-ordinator) to be re-appointed, but just anybody, not Garba Lawal, who devoted all of his time working against Keshi.”

Lawal was credited as saying he doesn’t care about Keshi returning as coach and said he has no regret leading calls for his sack earlier.

Speaking on the matter, NFF President, Amanju Pinnick, told Guardian on Tuesday that he was not aware of any cold war between Keshi and Lawal in Eagles’ camp.

Pinnick said: “I don’t know where such report is coming from. I am not aware of any problem between Keshi and Lawal. I have a meeting with Keshi in the next 30 minutes.”

UK To Return Ex-Governor’s N1.7BN Loot

A sum of £1.2 million had previously been returned to Nigeria while an additional £80 million has also been confiscated.

The United Kingdom is set to return the sum of £ 6.8 million (N1,798,624,242.00) to Nigeria as part of looted funds it seized from the former Governor of Delta State, James Onanefe Ibori.

A sum of £1.2 million had previously been returned to Nigeria while an additional £80 million has also been confiscated.

This was disclosed on Tuesday, November 4, by Mr. Rupert Broad, a Senior Investigator with the UK Metropolitan Police during a meeting on “Supporting Policing in Nigeria: What Role for Police in the Nigerian Diaspora” which was held at the House of Commons.

Broad said:

“Out of the eight million pounds confiscated from Ibori, 1.2 million pounds had so far been returned to Nigeria, while the rest was waiting for redistribution as to when it would be sent back to Nigeria.”

“Approximately, 80 million pounds is temporarily frozen and a confiscation hearing has been fixed for April 2015, where the judge will determine how much was stolen, after which it would be returned to Nigeria,” he added.

Ibori was in April 2012 sentenced to 13 years imprisonment after being found guilty of fraud and money laundering by a British Southcrown Court.

WARNING: Chemical Linked To Cancer Found in This Popular Toothpaste

The top-selling toothpaste Total contains a chemical called triclosan, and its use has provoked an avalanche of discussions lately. The toothpaste that was the main subject of these debates is made by Colgate-Palmolive Co., and the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) approved it in 1997.

Nobody thought that things would go the way they did. This year the agency, after a lawsuit by the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), released all the safety data they had regarding this item. It turned out that the data had been long hidden by the public.

The discovery was more than shocking – over the past 18 years millions of people have been regularly putting a dangerous toxin in their mouth. The toxin mentioned in the lawsuit is potentially associated with high risk of cancer, endocrine disruption, infertility and other health problems.

The chemical, triclosan, is actually a pesticide. It is similar to the Agent Orange chemical weapon which was sprayed during the Vietnam War.

You can also find it as 5-chloro-2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy) phenol. Initially, it has been used in surgical hand scrubs and other disinfectant agents. It is a derivative of 2,4-D, known as a highly toxic herbicide. This is nothing you would expect to find in your toothpaste, right?

However, Colgate still argues that the toothpaste is safe – they supported their claim with more than 80 clinical studies that involved 19,000 people.

Thomas DiPiazza, the company’s spokesman, pointed to an independent 2013 Cochrane study. The results of this study showed no evidence of any harmful effects associated with the use of Total.

But, over time triclosan has been gradually removed from many other personal care products. However, Total still contains it. What is even more interesting, the EU has banned the chemical and now there is no food-related product that contains it.

This step raised many questions and debates. We must mention that the FDA itself was not quite sure when it was about to approve the toothpaste as an over-the-counter drug, and there were certain concerns that the chemical could increase the risk of cancer. However, eventually Total was approved.

Maybe the FDA should not take all the responsibility regarding this issue. The whole problem was probably initiated when the FDA was about to make the decision about Total, and it only looked at the research results provided from Colgate’s labs.

FDA says that the company conducted a cancer study as well, but it admits that they could not easily say if the study was thorough enough. Moreover, the studies that showed fatal bone malformations in laboratory mice and rats – usually signalizing certain endocrine system disruptions, were actually dismissed as irrelevant.

However, the experts agreed at one point – when a certain chemical is considered to be dangerous to animals, no company should take the risk and expose human population to its use.

At that time an independent study showed that triclosan could not affect the thyroid function in humans, but later a shocking information was released in the media – it was revealed that Colgate gave grants to three out of the five authors. One of them even claimed that the company actually had no input on any data collection or thorough analysis, but the doubts were already raised.

No other company uses triclosan in the production of their oral care products. Since the pesticide is used in a wide range of other products, after some long discussions, many of the companies announced a new line of triclosan-free products, for example pet-food dispensers.

Maybe it would come as a surprise to you, but the manufacturer of Total has no intention of changing the formula of the subjected toothpaste. What is more frustrating, it still continues to market it as a product that improves the oral health. And it all came with the blessings of the FDA.

7 Signs That You Have Heart Problems

Strokes always come with a warning. There are many symptoms that can be seen within days and weeks before the actual impact happens. People often ignore and not associated with risk. There is a difference in symptoms that precede a heart attack in men and women. Research shows that 95% of women who had experienced a heart attack, had warning signs weeks and months before the impact, but did not recognize.

1. Erectile dysfunction

There is a great possibility that people with erectile dysfunction suffer from heart problems. Speaking more precisely, among those who suffer from heart disease, the arteries become narrow and restrict blood flow to the penis. Women with limited blood flow to the genital area have trouble reaching orgasm and are less satisfied.

2. Snoring

Restricted air flow into the chest during sleep may be a sign that your heart is in danger. People who have trouble sleeping and their breathing stops a few short moments during the sleep, have a three times greater chance of heart attack in the next five years.

3. Gum problems

Inflammation and bleeding of the gums is a sign that you should see your dentist. Also this signal can be an early sign of heart problems. Most people do not pay attention to it, thinking that the pain will go away on its own.

4. Swollen legs

If your ankles are swollen, you probably have problems with fluid retention in the body. Fluid retention in the body may be an early sign of heart disease.

It occurs when the heart does not pump strongly enough and as a result, the blood does not filter tissue’s toxic elements. This condition is called edema and usually occurs in the ankles, feet, legs and hands.

5. Irregular heart beat

Irregular heartbeat or arrhythmia is when the heart beats too quickly, too hard or skips a beat. It may be an early sign of coronary artery disease. This condition’s final stage can lead to stroke or heart attack.

6. Chest and shoulders pain

Angina pectoris is the most common symptom of unhealthy heart. This type of chest pain is not the same as acute pain that occurs in a heart attack. It is a hard and severe chest pain and it is getting worse with every taken breath. This condition can be worsened by stress and exercise.

7. Short sighs

Short breaths can suggest several risky diseases. It can be an early sign of heart disease and lung cancer. Symptoms include problems with taking air and the inability to take deep breath. If you have these symptoms and they get worse over time, you probably have heart problems.

Cops robbed and pushed into police van

JOHANNESBURG –Two police officers were robbed of of their firearms and shoved into their own police van by three armed men in Rabie Ridge, Midrand.
Footage was distributed over social media, showing two officers being approached by the trio in broad daylight, while sitting at a mobile police station.

The officers were robbed of their firearms, forced into the back of their own van and locked inside.

The policemen were then freed by community members and called for backup.

A search was conducted in the area and the three were arrested a short while later.

A firearm seized has now been linked to the murder of another police officer.

At last, Senate passes Cyber Crime bill into law

When Nigeria’s telecoms revolution took off after the licensing of GSM operators in 2001, it heralded positive developments for Nigerians as a people, and the economy in general. Communications among Nigerians and between Nigeria and the rest of the world, which was very difficult, became simplified almost overnight.

As the GSM operators penetrated the virgin market, information technology devices became prime gadgets for acquisition by Nigerians.
In no time, computers with internet connections became ubiquitous, and with the coming of data services, devices with mobile internet capability became choice attraction. When the tablet computer took the world by storm, Nigeria and Nigerians were not left out as tablets of various brands found their way to Nigeria, and were promptly gobbled up by a population whose desire to communicate became almost insatiable.
Thus, Nigerians joined the rest of the world in being active in cyberspace. Thousands, even millions, opened email accounts, and started playing games online. E-commerce gained ground, and online retailers are smiling to the banks. But like every good thing, the ugly came with it.
Scammers started operating in cyberspace, ripping off the unwary. While the Police and other law-enforcement agents tried their best, a major flaw existed: there was simply no law that captures cybercrime and prescribes punishment for cyber criminals.
It was this that prompted many interest groups in the ICT arena to clamour for a cyber crime law to regulate activities in the sector as well as to take care of the criminally-minded.
Only recently, the Senate passed the long-awaited Cyber Crime Bill into law.
It would be recalled that in the past 10 years, several bills on cybercrime had been pushed to the National Assembly by the Nigerian Information Technology experts, but none scaled through the final reading on the floor of the Senate.

Many of the bills did not even get a mention, but recently, one of the bills eventually passed through the final reading and was approved by Senate, a development that has drawn   commendations from ICT professionals in the country.
In 2011, Senator Gbenga Kaka (APC, Ogun East) had presented a bill to stop cybercrime. But the bill came under controversy due to a section related to social media.
In January, President Goodluck Jonathan in the bill titled, “Cybercrime Bill, 2013”, which was routed through the Senate President, David Mark, had urged members of the upper legislative chamber to consider its enactment into law.
The bill introduced July 28, 2011, was targeted at curbing the activities of internet scammers, who always give the country bad name, both locally and internationally.
Cybercrime
Cybercrime is a term for any illegal activity that uses a computer as its primary means. It also includes any illegal activity that uses a computer for the storage of evidence.
Cybercrimes include crimes that have been made possible by computers, such as network intrusions and the dissemination of computer viruses, as well as computer-based variations of existing crimes, such as identity theft, stalking, bullying and terrorism.
The passage of the bill is also part of the continuation of measures towards safeguarding the nation’s presence in cyberspace while ensuring protection of critical national information infrastructure. Accordingly, the bill provides for the prohibition, prevention, detection, response, investigation and prosecution of Cyber Crimes and for other related matters, 2014.

Boosts Nigeria’s image
One thing is clear with the passage of the bill. Cyber crimes, especially the advanced fee fraud popularly known as 419 are expected to be reduced to the barest minimum.
Similarly, with the passage of the bill, notable official government websites including that of National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), the country’s clearing house for IT projects will now be adequately protected..
Meanwhile, chairman of the Senate Committee, Sen. Umaru Dahiru, while presenting the report before the Senate for consideration and passage said that the bill seeks to provide a legal framework for the implementation and evaluation of response and preventive measures in the fight against cyber crime in line with international best practices.
Provisions of the law
It provides a legal framework for the prohibition and punishment of electronic fraud and cybercrime whilst promoting e-government services, electronic communications and transactions between public and private bodies as well as institutions and individuals.
The law has criminalized certain acts and omissions in line with regional and international best practices and provide procedural guidelines for the investigation of such offences.
It also defines the liability of service providers and ensures that national interest is not compromised by the use of electronic communications. Meanwhile, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over the plenary session of the Senate on Thursday, 23 October, put the question on the bill that sailed through third reading and was thus passed. Ekweremadu noted that the Bill would go a long way in fighting corruption as well as reduce to the barest minimum the rate of cyber-crime in Nigeria.

Stakeholders react
Commending the passage of the Cybercrime Bill into law, CEO of Mobile Software Solutions, Chris Uwaje   however noted that the law is fundamentally flawed by the fact that the foundation for the ICT Legislation Architecture for Nigeria which is the “National Information Technology (IT) Bill” and its enabling Acts- has not been laid.
For Lanre Ajayi, ATCON President, the passage of the bill is welcome , adding that it would boost e-commerce. Similarly, Jimson Olufuye, chairman of the Africa ICT Alliance, also commended passage of the bill, noting that what is critical is smooth, full implementation of its provisions.
Speaking on the new development, Jide Awe, Chairman Publicity, Trade and Event Committee of Nigeria Computer Society believes that the bill requires the President’s assent to become law.
“Cybersecurity legislation is however long overdue” he said. The political class has actually been quite slow and it is about having an appreciation of the damage absence of cyber legislation does to a nation and its people.

Provides for a safe digital environment “Effective enforcement will deter and penalize cyber mischief, and stem the negative misconceptions about the Nigerian nation in the foreign media and community.

Dike rejects $7,000 World Cup bonus

Oklahoma State Football team forward Courtney Dike has rejected the $7000 paid to her by the Nigeria Football Federation for participating at 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada saying the honour of playing for the country was enough reward for her.

The 19-year-old, who is the younger sister of Super Eagles forward Bright Dike, represented the country at the competition where she scored the fastest goal in the tournament’s history.

NFF Head of Competition Sanusi Mohammed told Sports Radio, Brila FM, that the player rejected the outstanding allowances accrued to her for representing the country at the 10-day tournament.

Sanusi told Brila FM, “When we called her mother to confirm the delivery of the allowances, she declined it and insisted that the opportunity of playing for Nigeria was all the reward the family needed.”

Dike’s elder brother, Bright, featured for Nigeria at the 2013 Confederations Cup in Brazil but missed the 2014 World Cup by a foot injury which side-lined him for four months.

Meanwhile, the head of the Nigeria Women League board Dilichukwu Onyedinma has said the player deserves a national award for her patriotic act.

The Women’s league boss told Football live, a programme on Brila FM, that what Dike did was worth emulating by other players in the country.

Dilichukwu told Football live, “She is a star and patriotic Nigerian who put service to her fatherland above money. The minister is aware and we will push the act before the NFF so it can inspire many others.”

She added, “Doing this with the backing of her parents, Courtney Dike should be applauded and perhaps celebrated.”

Foreign reserve now $38bn — Okonjo-Iweala

Abuja—The nation’s foreign reserve currently stands at $38 billion, the Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, disclosed yesterday.

Speaking at the Public Affairs Forum, in Abuja, the minister said the economy was stable and the Gross Domestic product, GDP, was growing at over 6 per cent in spite of the challenges facing the nation.
Her words, “One of the key things I want to tell you is that we have tried to keep this economy stable under this administration. All these things you are seeing- the investments in roads, the investments in industries cannot happen if your economy lacks stability.

“If you wake up worrying about inflation; if you wake up worrying about exchange rate, you know Nigerians watch the exchange rate every single day. If you wake up worrying about no growth then you cannot even talk about investing in the sector.
“So the number one task that every government delivers in every country- America, UK, Nigeria- is stability. One thing you have to say for the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan is that it has been able to deliver on macro-economic stability for the past three years.

“The exchange rate, yes, it has gone up and down, it fluctuates, but it has been relatively stable. The inflation rate has come down from about 12 per cent last year to about 8.5 per cent. The reserves are at $38 billion today and enough to cushion us for 5 months. We have been able to put a little more into the Excess Crude Account”.

The minister described Nigeria’s fiscal deficit as “one of the lowest in the world- just over 1 per cent of GDP”, adding that many countries, even in Europe, run fiscal deficits of between 5 to 10 per cent.

On borrowing , she noted that Nigerians voiced their objections to large borrowing and that as such the President Goodluck Jonathan administration decided to maintain a low debt profile.

“By 2010, we borrowed N1.3 trillion to help finance our spending. We determined under the president who said Nigerians don’t want borrowing, let’s bring it down. Today do you know what our borrowing is, N571 billion. We will continue to take it down, even if it is by N1, we will continue trending down. The debt stock is very high because of past borrowing but will continue to bring it down. That means we must be prudent in the way we spend and we must also be very fast to try to organize additional revenues”.

Non-oil revenue
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala said that the nation was too dependent on oil revenue and that with the falling oil price in the international market, coupled with declining crude oil production, expanding the non-oil revenue base had become inevitable.

Her words, “We are too depending on oil. The price of oil is now coming down. The quantities are also not as large as they used to be. So we have to plan differently. That is why we have to rely more on non-oil.”
“I am convinced that this economy can generate additional $ 3 billion that can help us finance our expenditures”.

She pointed out that Nigeria has a big responsibility, not just for itself but for the whole West African Sub-region and the entire African continent.

“We form 77 per cent of west African GDP, we form 25 per cent of Africa’s GDP. It means that if things don’t work well in Nigeria, a quarter of the African GDP is affected”, she said, adding, “that is why this administration is not only thinking of what we will deliver here but how to be a responsible African citizen and global citizen in the way it delivers for its home people”.

Reasons For Breast Pain (It’s Not What You May Think)

Reasons For Breast Pain (It’s Not What You May Think)

Many women relate breast pain to breast cancer, which causes them to get worried. Nonetheless, most cases of breast pain are not related to this disease. That’s why it is good to know other reasons why your breasts may hurt.

Most women tend to have breast pain at many times in their lives because it is a common symptom of hormonal changes from menstruation or pregnancy. Inflammation and sensitivity in your breasts or during your period are very common that isn’t related to anything serious and can simply be caused by a hormonal change.

If you don’t find abnormalities when doing a self breast exam, but you experience frequent pain in them, it is possible that other benign diseases are influencing it. Next we will tell you about the most common causes for breast pain.

Hormonal Causes

In general, teenagers that start their menstrual cycle tend to feel a certain pain in their breast. PMS can even cause pain before menstruation.

Many women suffer from breast pain during their fertile years, with it more frequent halfway through their menstrual cycle and coinciding with ovulation and the days before menstruation. These two cycle phases coincide with more sudden change in feminine hormone levels.

Also, the use of anti-contraceptive pills and hormone replacement therapy can be other influences of this problem.

Pregnancy

One of the first symptoms of pregnancy is breast pain. A woman tends to experience more sensitivity when they are pregnant at a young age or during their first pregnancy. Generally, during the first trimester of pregnancy they experience pain, their breasts grow in size, and blue veins become visible that indicate increase in blood flow.

Breastfeeding

When a woman has just had a child, she will tend to experience breast pain independent of if she chooses to breast feed or not due to the increase in milk. But you should pay special attention if the pain is frequent, intense, or doesn’t improve, because it can indicate possible mastitis.

Mastitis

This problem is an inflammation of the breasts, which comes from the obstruction of the milk ducts. This happens due to an infection in the breast, caused by a virus, bacteria, or fungus. The symptoms that you should be aware of are reddening in the breasts, pain, and especially fever.

Cysts in the Breasts

Breast cysts are a type of sack filled with liquid that form inside the breasts. These are formed when normal mammary glands increase in size, which can be just one or more. These cysts tend to be benign and are characterized by producing pain in the breasts. When they are big in size, you can  feel them by touching them, but some require a mammogram or a sonogram to be detected.

Abscesses in the Breasts

Breast abscesses are accumulations of pus in the mammary tissue. Basically, it is an infection. This problem can produce breast pain, they may feel like soft bulges, and is generally caused by bacteria that enter the breasts through cracks in the nipples or from breastfeeding problems. Independent of their cause, the best idea is to consult a doctor so they can do the necessary exams and offer the proper treatment.

Breast Cancer

As we mentioned in the beginning, many women tend to relate breast pain with breast cancer but in general this is not the case. Breast pain is one of symptoms that takes the longest to appear when you are suffering from breast cancer. It is possible that if a women detects any abnormalities in their breasts and treats it on time, they won’t feel any breast pain from cancer.

Recommendations for Preventing and Treating Breast Pain

Generally, it isn’t necessary to take medicine to relieve breast pain. What you can keep in mind is that there are some lifestyle changes you can do to help treat and prevent this problem.

Avoid wearing bras that are too small.

Have a healthy diet that is low in fat and rich in fruit, vegetables, and grains.

Keep a balanced weight because it will help stabilize hormone levels

Increase your consumption of vitamins B6 (pyridoxine), vitamin B1 (thiamine), and vitamin E.

You can apply home remedies for pain like water lemon juice, vinegar, or coffee compresses.

"There is no morality in governance. If you want to be moral, go to church" - Rotimi Amaechi

The Governor of Rivers state Rotimi Amaechi was a guest on AIT's Focus Nigeria this morning where he talked about a lot of things including his reservations about President Jonathan...

"I respect the president as a person. He is a gentle man, he is a good man but there is no morality in governance. There is no goodness in governance. If you want to be moral or want to be a good man, go to church. Right there when it comes to governance, its about the people. It is about delivering to the people. It is about competence. It is about your ability to perform. So when you look at the President and you say he is a gentle man, you should also look at somebody in terms of performance. But even those who say he is a good man, what about the fact that you can compare his government to Abacha's government. What is the difference? TAN singing everywhere one million man match, can you compare the two?"

TAN, they are getting how many signatures? 17 million? They got 17million Nigerians to sign to vote. That's how they voted for governors forum. They say everybody sign for governor's forum. Sign to vote. Now if you compare this, compare again the use of the military under Abacha and how the President is using the military against citizens. Can you see the two? I say to people, if I were to be an adviser to the President, I would say watch, ...History, History and you should be careful" he said

FRSC Court of Appeal sanctions new plate number

The Court of Appeal in Lagos, has granted the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, the permission to go ahead with the new number plate.

Presiding over a suit filed against the FRSC by Emmanuel Ofoegbu before a Federal High Court in Lagos, Justice Ikegh gave his verdict on Friday, October 31 which was released to the press yesterday, Monday, November 3.

The plaintiff had challenged the October 1, 2013 deadline set for motorists to change to the number plate and the threat to impound vehicles of defaulters.

“I would allow this appeal in part; for the avoidance of doubt, this appeal only succeeds in part to the effect that regulations 2012 has legal force, and is enforceable from October 1, 2013, the administrative date set by FRSC. The part of the decision of the lower court declaring the regulation 2012 unconstitutional is hereby set aside,” Ikegh ruled.

The lower court declaration referred to by Justice Ikegh was a ruling by Justice John Tsoho of the lower court on Wednesday, March 26. Justice Tsoho had ruled that the threats by the FRSC to impound vehicles of defaulters, including the applicant’s vehicle(s) over the redesigned plates were unconstitutional.

Dissatisfied by the ruling of the lower court, the FRSC appealed seeking an order to uphold its power to issue and enforce the use of new number plates for motorists in Nigeria. FRSC raised four issues for determination — whether the trial court was right when it took notice of newspaper publication on the alleged threat to impound vehicles of defaulters.

It also urged the appellate court to decide whether the trial court was right to hold that the NRTR 2012 was a nastily conceived policy without legal framework.

The Commission had also queried the locus standi of the respondent to have initiated the suit at the lower court, and whether the court was right to have granted an injunction in his favour.

The appellate court however, resolved three of the issues raised by the FRSC, in favour of the respondent (Ofoegbu).

The party pegged its governorship form at N12 million with the expression of interest form going for N2 million, while the nomination form is N10 million.

For the State Houses of Assembly, the expression of interest form goes for N200,000 while the nomination form is N1 million.

Angelina Jolie Opens Up About Her Wedding and Marriage to Brad Pitt: "It Feels Nice to Be Husband and Wife"

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's surprise wedding may have shocked everyone who woke up to the news on the morning of Aug. 28, let alone those who thought those two might just stay engaged forever.

But obviously the globally anticipated nuptials didn't actually occur on a whim--although, really, more preparation has gone into some children's birthday parties than went into Brangelina's comparatively low-key, family-oriented affair.

"We were all going to have a wedding," Jolie recalls the two weeks leading up to the big day in Vanity Fair's December 2014 issue, on sale Nov. 6 and featuring the Oscar winner on the cover. "There was no cake, so Pax made a cake. The kids made little pillows for the rings and Knox practiced [being a ring bearer] with an acorn that kept falling off the pillow. Brad's mom [Jane Pitt] went and picked some flowers and tied them up."

Well, if this whole super-star, A-list actor-filmmaker stuff doesn't work out, the whole family can go into the wedding-planning business.

The kids also helped write mom and dad's vows, Jolie told the magazine. "They did not expect us never to fight, but they always made us promise to say 'sorry' if we do," she recalled. "So they said, 'Do you?,' and we said, 'We do!'"

Asked if she felt any different now that she was officially married to Pitt, her partner of nearly nine years beforehand, Jolie admitted that "it does feel different."

"It feels nice to be husband and wife," she said.

Jolie and Pitt tied the knot on Aug. 23 in a non-denominational civil ceremony held inside the chapel on their estate in the South of France, Château Miraval. Fewer than two dozen people--including the bride and groom--were in attendance.

The I-dos were followed by a bountiful luncheon in the main house's "Great Hall," complete with bottles of signature rosé from the newlyweds' own vineyard.

"Brad and Angie said handwritten vows telling each other how much they love each other and their beautiful family and they both had tears in their eyes as did everyone else," a source told E! News days after the wedding. "It was short but loaded with meaning, and it was a lovely way to start life in their new family home now that the building work is finally finished."

It's her devotion to her family and her main role--mom--that helps drive both her humanitarian work and her ventures as a director, her most recent effort being the drama Unbroken, based on the book of the same name about Olympian turned troubled war hero and all-around indominitable spirit Louis Zamperini, who died this year at the age of 97 while the movie was still being finished.

"I want young kids to see this film," Jolie said in VF about the movie, which apparently pulls no punches in the gritty realism department. "I want something to take to my children--a life message." Unbroken is in theaters Christmas Day.

NAPTIP arrests 274 human traffickers

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and other Related Matters (NAPTIP) says it has arrested 274 traffickers between January and June across the nation.

Orakwue Arinze, the Spokesperson of the agency, disclosed this in an interview with NAN on Tuesday in Abuja.

Giving a breakdown of the arrest, male accounted for 146 and female 128.

Arinze said the offences ranged from human trafficking to child exploitative labour.

He, however, said the agency was creating public awareness through the media across states of the federation, on efforts to curb the menace.

According to him, the strategies include public enlightenment on the tricks adopted by human traffickers to lure their victims.

“NAPTIP, in a bid to curb human trafficking and other forms of sexual exploitation, has increased awareness creation in all parts of the country through the internet, social media and other forms of communication.

“We are engaging our stakeholders via social media educating people on the dangers of human trafficking as well as the tricks employed by human traffickers to lure their victims.

“The Agency is currently running a 13-week radio programme in Benin-City tagged `NAPTIP half hour’, aimed at educating the public on human trafficking and other related offences.

“There have been town hall meetings with various sectors of the community as well as massive collaboration with women, especially in the South-Eastern part of Nigeria,” Arinze said.

“The Executive Secretary is putting a lot of efforts and resources into prevention by educating the public, especially those in rural areas where most of the victims of human traffickers are recruited from,” he explained.

Arinze NAPTIP was collaborating with the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) to include anti-trafficking topics in primary and secondary schools’ curricula.

This measure, he, said would guarantee every child that passes through primary and secondary schools to know about human trafficking.

Arinze, who said prevention was key to checking crimes, said the agency was making efforts to provide resources for effective public enlightenment that would change public minds against the menace.

“One of the four P’s guiding the Agency’s activities is Prevention and it is our belief that preventing a crime from happening is cardinal,” he said.

Hundreds of thousands pack Iraq's Karbala for Ashura

Karbala (Iraq) (AFP) - Hundreds of thousands of Shiite pilgrims packed the Iraqi shrine city of Karbala Tuesday, braving the threat of jihadist attack to mark one of the holiest days of their faith.

Ashura commemorates the killing of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Mohammed, by the army of the Caliph Yazid in 680 AD, the formative event in Shiite Islam.

The festival has been marred by attacks by Sunni extremists in previous years but this year's commemorations come with jihadists of the Islamic State group controlling swathes of Iraq.

Tens of thousands of security personnel and allied militiamen have been deployed to protect the pilgrims in a major test for the new government of Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi.

"Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from all the Iraqi provinces and from Arab and foreign states arrived in Karbala to take part in the commemoration of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein," Karbala Governor Aqil al-Turaihi told AFP.

Hundreds of men dressed in white robes performed a ritual called "tatbeer," cutting their heads with swords and spears in mourning for the slain imam, the grandson of the Prophet Mohammed.

Only a small minority of pilgrims perform the ritual, which leaves faces and white robes stained with blood and has been condemned by some Shiite clerics.

Thousands of black-clad pilgrims then gathered to listen to the story of Imam Hussein and the battle in which he died, beating their heads and crying in mourning and guilt.

According to Shiite belief, Hussein willingly sacrificed himself in opposition to Yazid's un-Islamic and unjust rule, defying the caliph's army with only a few dozen followers.

The division between what would become the Shiite and Sunni faiths began in a dispute over who should succeed Mohammed and was solidified with Hussein's death.

Tens of thousands of people have died in fighting, bombings and executions in Iraq carried out along sectarian lines over the past decade.

Sunni extremists, who consider Shiites to be heretics, have killed dozens of pilgrims marking Ashura in past years.

But the danger was heightened this year when IS militants swept through much of the country's Sunni Arab heartland north and west of Baghdad and seized territory south of the capital close to the main pilgrimage route.

The group already claimed bombings targeting Shiites in Baghdad on Sunday that killed at least 18 people.

Iraq has deployed tens of thousands of security personnel and allied militiamen in Baghdad, along the road to Karbala, and in the shrine city itself to guard against attacks.

My tribal marks are my natural ID card, Obasanjo tells NIMC boss

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday described his Owu tribal marks as the natural identity card with which he had been operating since he was born.

Obasanjo also disclosed that with his collection of the new National ID card, his possession of an international passport and his Owu tribal marks on each side of his cheeks, he now had to operate with three means of identification as a Nigerian.

The former president, who in his characteristic jocular manner, said this while collecting his new e-card from the management of the National Identity Management Commission, that brought the card to him in his Presidential Hill Top Mansion in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital. He, however, spent more than 10 minutes to activate the e-card and its other in-built applications.

Obasanjo wondered why the process for the enrolment, activation and collection of his card took so much time, despite his status and the special treatment given to him by the NIMC management.

He also queried why he was being issued the e-card at this point in time when he had become ‘unemployed and unemployable’.

Obasanjo, therefore, expressed fears about the hardship and delay the people at the grassroots would have to endure whenever the process for the capture of their biometric data commenced.

The former president also enquired from the NIMC management team, led by its Director General, Mr. Chris Onyemenam, how the applications in the e-card would be of benefit to the people back in places like his rural Ibogun in Ifo Local Government Area  of the state, and what it would cost them to make use of such applications, taking into considering their level of poverty.

“Not many people know that I have three identity cards. The first is the International Passport, the second is the National Identity card and the third is my tribal marks. It is not funny that I am collecting the National Identity card at a time that I am unemployed and unemployable.

“What we have now is what we wanted to do in 1979 but not as complex as this one and also not as sophisticated as this. Although we are getting the card late, but we are getting the best that technology can offer.

“I have my worries and I always express my feelings. I have got special treatment but how will it be for someone in my village to be captured?

“How much of this functionality in the card will be useful to him and how much will be paid knowing that poverty is still ravaging the rural dwellers. These are issues you will have to address,” he said.

Obasanjo, however, expressed hope that the ongoing e-card project would assist the country in addressing its security challenges and also serve as a means for the security agencies to gather intelligence reports.

He further disclosed that when the idea of a national ID card first mooted in 1979, its estimated cost was just N16 million then.

Obasanjo expressed regret that the cost of the project had now risen astronomically to “billions and billions of naira,” due mainly to the sophistication of the card.

The former president, however, noted that the national ID card scheme was long overdue.

Onyemenam in his response said the observations made by the former president had been noted, adding that the commission was already putting in place logistics arrangement to ensure that people in the hinterlands and the creeks were equally and adequately registered for the scheme.

Father knows best: Man invites daughter’s ‘rapist’ to dinner then tortures him to death

A furious father is facing murder charges after he treated his teenage daughter’s alleged rapist to dinner before torturing him to death.

The man’s 14-year-old daughter was allegedly raped two months earlier by the 45-year-old married man.
According to the Indian Express, the father invited the man to his home in northeast Delhi’s Khajuri Khas for his last meal before assaulting him.

He reportedly strapped the alleged rapist to a chair, burned his genitals with heated tongs and strangled him.

Police say the father turned himself in following the incident, giving a detailed statement of the elaborate torture methods he had carried out.

“I burned his genitals once, he screamed. I did it again, he shuddered. When I did it the third time … he did not move. He was dead … I did not want to kill him,” the father reportedly told the police.

“The father called the medicine supplier over to his house, saying he wanted to discuss some issue. He served him dinner,” an officer told the Indian Express.

“After the meal, the father overpowered the man and tied him to a chair. He got heated tongs and burned the supplier’s genitals before strangling him to death. He came to the police station and surrendered himself.”

Police allege the man had been planning the murder since his daughter told him about the incident the day it happened, but did not report it to police, fearing “a bad name for his daughter.”

America Goes to Poll in Midterm Elections

After months of frenetic campaigns that saw unprecedented negative ads in American politics, the citizens will this Tuesday decide who controls the US Senate between the two major parties, the Democratic Party and the Republican Party.

The Democrats have held the majority of the seats in the Senate since the 2006 election when it made numerous gains, with six Republican incumbents defeated.

However, Democrats' path to holding their Senate majority has narrowed, with Republicans pulling ahead in critical states and on the tips of upsets in some others, according to several polls.

In an interview with Washington Post’s Greg Sargent, the Executive Director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, Guy Cecil, sounded realistic about the challenges Democrats face, seeming to suggest at one point that keeping the majority might not be the most likely outcome. However, he continued to project confidence, insisting that internal polling had enough races within the margin of error to position Democrats to hold the majority if things go right.

“Clearly when you have as many races as we do that are within the margin of error you’re not going to win every race. But our approach has been to keep as many states competitive as possible, and keep it that way until the very end, in the hopes that the right combination of states actually leads to a majority. But no, I’m not predicting wins in every single targeted state. But there’s a path to victory,” he said.

Allen West, a Republican strategist and former congressman told THISDAY that, “We are ready for this election. President Obama and his friends and followers are trying to turn America into the nanny state, their socialist welfare paradise. We will not allow that to happen! President Obama did nothing to protect America from our foreign enemies.”

According to the Society for Responsive Politics, more money were spent on ads by political parties and their candidates during the last days of the campaign than shot up the money spent in this election to about $4 Billion, making it the most expensive election in America history.

The non-partisan group has equally said the outcome of today’s election would depend on voters’ turnout.
“These last days of the campaign are when person-to-person contact with voters — the famous “ground game” — is meant to help push candidates over the top. The ground game is the last refuge of every campaign trailing in the polls, since a stellar get-out-the-vote operation can close a deficit in a hurry. This cycle, Democrats, in particular, are desperately hoping that their advantages in voter contact expertise and technology will save their Senate majority,” it said.

The Chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia, Dubose Porter told THISDAY that “we are not going into this election for a run-off.”

“We reflect what Georgia really looked like. The diversity is our strength as shown in the candidates we are presenting for this election. We are working hard to avoid a run-off. We have sufficiently mobilised voters through phone banking. What matters is not how much money is raised by a candidate, but how a candidate is using the money,” Dubose added.

There are 36 states with gubernatorial races this year, in which nine have close races. The senate races to watch on election night will include, Georgia, Kentucky, Florida, New Hampshire,  Alaska, Louisiana, Arkansas and North Carolina.

The Republican will need to win six more seats to control the Senate. Interestingly, the state's Senate race has stayed relentlessly close.

N2,000 palaver: Policeman crushes wife, kills baby

Like a scene from a horror movie, a police corporal, Lucky Ikharia, on October 30, allegedly used a bus to crush the legs of his wife, Dupe. Having left her for dead, Lucky went home where he allegedly stabbed his baby, David, to death, ripping out the toddler’s intestines.

Still in a rage, the policeman turned the knife on himself in an attempt to take his own life.

PUNCH Metro, however, learnt that Lucky and his wife survived but both were in critical conditions.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the incident occurred at the family’s rented apartment in Kale Close, Mafoluku, Oshodi last week.

Our correspondent gathered that four days prior to the incident, 34-year-old Lucky, who hails from Sabon Gida Ora, Edo State, had a quarrel with his wife, Dupe over N2,000, after which he reportedly sent her packing.

The policeman, who is attached to the Makinde Police Division, Oshodi, Lagos had also ‘seized’ their only child from Dupe as a means of ‘punishing’ her.

PUNCH Metro learnt that around 8pm on the day of the attack, Dupe, a 30-year-old indigene of Abeokuta, Ogun State, was heading for her mother’s house in Mushin unknown to her that Lucky was waiting in a bus to attack her.

It was learnt that on getting to Olorunshogo junction, Lucky pursued his wife with the bus, crushing her legs in the process.

Leaving her for dead, Lucky was said to have fled the scene while passersby initially thought the attack was random.

However, after Dupe was rushed to a nearby hospital on same evening for treatment and had regained consciousness the following morning, she explained that the man who drove the bus which crushed her legs was her own husband.

Unknown to Dupe, after her husband attacked her, he reportedly drove back to their apartment where he stabbed their child, David, in the belly, before fleeing the residence.

Our correspondent learnt that Lucky’s co-tenants and Dupe’s relatives who discovered the baby’s corpse on Friday morning, reported the incident at the Akinpelu Police Division. It was also gathered that the knife and the bus had both been recovered.

When PUNCH Metro visited the hospital where Dupe was receiving treatment on Monday, the woman, who could hardly speak. She said the cause of the fight was a sum of N2000 which Lucky claimed she stole.

She said, “We got married and started living together around October 2013. We usually had quarrels and that was not the first time he would beat me up, and send me out of the house. But this incident started on Sunday, October 26. Lucky had initially kept N15,000 with me.

“Then, on Sunday, he collected N5, 000 to repair the bus. Later I gave him the rest, only to realise it was N8, 000. So, he began to question where I kept the remaining N2000. But I knew that it was his nature to stir up trouble because he had a habit of keeping money with me and going again to take it.

“So, we began to fight, and he asked me to leave the house. He did not allow me to take the child with me that day. I was sleeping in friends’ places until Thursday when I decided to go back home. I did not find my baby, and when I asked him, he threatened that if he met me in the house by evening, he would kill me, kill the baby and himself.”

Dupe said she was then called by her mother to come to their family house in Mushin, adding that as she got on her way, and was at the Olorunshogo junction, a commercial bus swerved to her path and hit her several times.

She said, “The commercial bus was his bus. He was the only man inside. He hit me and I fell. Then he reversed and came over my legs again. I lost consciousness. That was the last thing I knew.”

Our correspondent learnt from one of the nurses that Dupe might be admitted in the hospital for about two months and might spend over N600,000 for treatment owing to the severity of the attack.

One of Dupe’s relatives, Mr. Segun Akiode, told our correspondent that the family had yet to inform Dupe of her son’s death. He added that the family also did not know Lucky’s whereabouts.

He said, “I was called on the phone on Thursday evening that my sister was knocked down at Olorunshogo junction. When I got there, I met her in a pool of blood. So, we rushed her to a hospital. It was already around 9.30pm.

“On Friday, when we went to their apartment, we found the baby boy, stabbed in the belly and already dead on the floor. We have not told Dupe about his death yet. So, we went to report at the Akinpelu Police Division, and we were asked to describe the bus which hit Dupe. When we did, they said the bus was with them in the station, but the whereabouts of Lucky were still unknown.”

When our correspondent got to the couple’s rented apartment in Kale Close, Mafoluku, it was learnt from neighbours that Lucky had not been seen at home since the day of incident.

At the Makinde Division, a police source told our correspondent that the suspect was one of the patrol van drivers, but he had not come to work since the day of the incident.

The source added that Lucky, who was believed to have also stabbed himself, was in an undisclosed hospital receiving treatment.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, when contacted promised to get back to our correspondent on the matter, but he had yet to do so as of press time.

Meanwhile, PUNCH Metro learnt that the corpse of the baby had been deposited at a morgue in Yaba, Lagos.

‘Better Pikin’ Brought Me To Limelight —Harrysong

One of the popular Nigerian musicians and a dance hall artiste, Harrysong, now popularly called “Better Pikin” said he began to gain prominence, attention and respect after the release of his hit song “Better Pikin”.

Harrysong whose quest for stardom has not only earned him what he wants but taken him farther than expected was formerly R&B singer but later changed his style of music to suit his fans who want to feel relaxed at all times with the hip-hop hits.

He has released several singles including “I’m In love”, “Beta Pikin” and his latest single “Colombo” which is a sexy dancehall song.

The young artiste who hails from Delta State and the only child of his parents said he relocated to Lagos to make ends meet and to  make it big.

“I was doing R&B jazz until I got to Lagos. I realised that the kind of song I sing is not what the public wants, so I changed my style of music. I realised that to make an impact, I have to think of the listeners, think of the fans, and the consumers first even before starting the melody,” he recalled.

Harrysong, who is currently signed to Five Star Music, a record label owned by E-Money, which he joined two years ago, said his kind of music is called the Fusion due to the mixture of Afro dance.

Speaking on how he came in contact with the record label, Harrysong said the owner has been his friend since his days as a member of Ojez’s Band.

“He always came to watch me perform and got interested in me and later signed me up when I went solo. Under his label, I have been able to express myself,” Harrysong said.

On the state of Nigerian music industry, Harrysong said Nigeria is number one when it comes to the musical aspect.

“The music industry is growing very big and very lucrative and the kind of money coming in is enough for us. The music industry is for men that understand what music is. The competition from other African countries is making us better because we learn things quickly. When the Ghanaians brought Azonto, we picked it and made more money from it than the owners. Our music is now the African gift to the world because of how it is.”

Harrysong is a Political Science graduate from the University of Port Harcourt.

He said he would have been in politics but he doesn’t like the way it is being played in Nigeria.

”I really want to go into politics but the way it is being played here in Nigeria discourages me. So I am more blessed as a musician. If I am not doing music, I will do any other business, I am from Delta State and there are a lot of opportunities there,” he said.

Harrysong is looking forward to releasing more singles before the end of this year and will come up with his album later next year.
