New Governor of Niger State Sworn-in By His Wife's Mother

History was made as on Friday May 29, 2015, in Nigeria, Niger State to be precise as Abubakar Sani Bello emerged as the first governor in the country to be sworn-in by his mother in-law.

Justice Fati Lami Abubakar, whose daughter is married to Sani Bello, is the Chief Judge of Niger State, and the lot fell on her to perform the constitutional duty on his son in-law, Governor Sani Bello.

The swearing-in recorded further drama when the convoy of the outgone governor, Babangida Aliyu, was stoned by some aggrieved youths in the state, prompting security agents to fire shots in the air.

This is coming on the heels of the declaration by the new governor that he will carry out a forensic audit of the state’s coffers to determine its debt profile and bonds as well as ascertain whether there was transparency in the process of obtaining the huge debt bequeathed to his administration.
