Police rescue another tortured, chained child in Ogun

Less than one week after security operatives rescued a nine-year-old boy, Korede Taiwo, allegedly chained and starved for a month by his pastor – father, Francis Taiwo, at Ajibawo, a suburb of Otta Local Government Area of Ogun State, the Police, yesterday, also set free a 10 -year – old girl, Promise Ude from a similar circumstance in Adigbe area of the state .
According to the acting Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemiý, the victim was chained to a burglary proof of an uncompleted building for about 28 hours for allegedly stealing N4,000 and was rescued by policemen attached to the Adigbe Divisional Police Headquarters, acting on a tip-off from neighbours.

He said: “The suspect, who is Promise’s aunt, Mrs. Chiamaka Okafor, ran away but her husband, Sunday Okafor, was arrested. The Commissioner of Police, Iliyasu Ahmed, has expressed shock and sadness over the incident, and has ordered that full investigation be conducted into the matter immediately.

“We had an information that a 10 -year-old girl by the name Promise Ude, was chained to a burglary proof at an uncompleted building at Adigbe area and this led our men to the scene. The girl was rescued by the Police and upon interrogation, the girl told us that it was her aunty that tied her on the allegation that she stole a sum of N4,000. The aunty is on the run, while her husband who is an accomplice has been arrested and helping us in our investigation.”

He added: “The CP Iliyasu Ahmed has sent a serious manhunt after the fleeing aunt with the view of bringing her to justice, so as to serve as deterrents to others. I don’t know why people are being wicked to their own blood relation. It is quite appalling, and because of that, the CP has warned residents of the state that the command will no longer tolerate this type of man’s inhumanity to man, and that anybody caught in this kind of act is going to be dealt with.

“The matter is under investigation and the Police is after the woman by name Chiamaka Okafor. Her husband, one Sunday Okafor is in our custody. As soon as we complete the investigation, they will be charged to court.”

He observed that the suspects are not the biological parents of the victim, adding: “ This recent one is not the biological daughter of the woman in question. It is this type of people that will go to the village and bring their relation to town and start maltreating them when they get to town. It is not right to chain a child on a standing position for 24-hours because he/she stole money.”
