Orphaned Teenager With No Legs Achieves Lifelong Ambition to Go to University

AN ORPHANED teenager who lost both her legs as a child has achieved her lifelong ambition – to go to university.

Wang Juan, 19, was in a horrific car accident when she was just six years old and had a double above-knee leg amputation.
Tragically her mother then committed suicide after being unable to cope with the pressures of rising a physically disabled child.

Her dad walked out soon after leaving Wang's ageing grandparents to care for her.
Wang had to learn how to cope with using only her hands but was determined not to let her disability get in the way of leading a fulfilling life.

She said: "I remember when people looked at my strangely wherever I went. I had to adapt to it, push it out of my mind.

"Staying optimistic and friendly is important. I have made many friends because of this."

Wang can now walk comfortably on her hand and helps her grandparents with chores around the house.
This summer she was accepted to Shangqiu University, in China’s central Henan Province, to study human resources management.
Having arrived in Shangqiu earlier this month, Wang's story and her struggle to lead an ordinary life quickly spread across campus, moving both teachers and fellow students.

For her convenience, the university offered Wang Juan a room on the first floor of the dormitory and also offered to waive her tuition, book and boarding fees – a total of over 50,000 RMB (£5,000).
Wang Juan said: "I am moved and very grateful that many kind people have given me a hand, just so I can have the chance to continue my studies.

"I never wanted to stand out because of my disability, and I don’t want to trouble anyone. I believe I will have a bright future as long as I work hard."
