Rainstorm sacks Akwa Ibom community

No fewer than 20 houses in Afaha Ikot Eyo Edo in Esit Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom have been destroyed by rainstorm.

The village head of Afaha Ikot Eyo Edo, Chief Samuel Ikene, said this during a press conference on Tuesday. He stated that the flood had rendered over 1,000 people homeless in the community.

“Since the rainstorm started on Sunday, flood has ravaged the community and people have been rendered homeless. Some people moved their belongings to neighbouring. We don’t have a place to sleep and even clothes to wear,” he said.

Ikene said the flood, caused by persistent rainfall, also destroyed property worth millions of naira.

The community, he added, had suffered considerable losses from the effect of flooding.

He attributed the flood to the lack of good drainage in the area and asked government to help to stem the tide in the area.

He called on the state government and other relevant stakeholders to come to their aid, noting that their farmlands had also been destroyed.

A resident of the community, Mr. Atang Friday, stated that the flood rose above windows level.

He asked the government to provide relief materials to cushion the effect on the community.
