Policemen foil bank robbery in Delta

There was pandemonium on Tuesday after a group of armed youths tried to attack a bank on Udu Road, Warri, Delta State.

The incident started when a bullion van conveying money to the bank was held in a traffic jam, and the driver decided to drive against the traffic.

An oncoming tipper, in an attempt to avoid colliding with the bullion van, swerved from its lane and rammed into a pregnant woman.
The woman’s legs were crushed, leading to a protest march by youths in the area.

It was at that point that some hoodlums hijacked the protest and attempted to break into the bank.

It took the intervention of the police in B Division of Warri, led by the Divisional Police Officer, Mr. Anietie Eyoh, to stop the attack.

Southern City News gathered that about 17 of the hoodlums were arrested on the spot.

The police said efforts were in top gear to apprehend others involved in the attempt to rob the bank.

It was gathered that the accident victim, who was rushed to an undisclosed hospital, was receiving treatment.

An eyewitness, who did not identify himself, said, “The situation would have gotten out of control if not for the quick arrival of the police that restored calm.”

However, efforts to speak with the DPO of the division proved abortive.
