Enugu judiciary workers call off six-month strike

The Enugu State chapter of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria on Wednesday called off the industrial action it embarked on in a bid to compel the state government to comply with constitutional provisions on the independence and financial autonomy of the judiciary.

The strike had lasted six months.

However, the judicial workers decided to resume work after their leaders held discussions with Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi at the government house.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, which lasted about four hours, the state chairman of JUSUN, Comrade Chinedu Mbah, disclosed that members of the union will resume work on Thursday.

“The strike embarked on by the Judiciary Staff Union Enugu State is hereby suspended.

“I am calling on workers to resume work immediately,” he said.

He explained that the governor has agreed to abide by the terms of the agreement earlier signed by the immediate past administration and the union.

According to him, Ugwuanyi promised that “if the economy improves, he would pay us the Consolidated Judiciary salary Structure.”

Mbah added that the union would have another meeting with the governor in December.
