Nigerian Footballer, Oniya, Dies In Malaysia

Nigerian defender, David Faramola Oniya died yesterday, after collapsing on the pitch during a friendly match between his Malaysian club T-Team and Kelantan. He was aged 30.

Local media said the T-Team skipper collapsed three minutes into the match in Kota Bharu and was taken to hospital.

T-Team CEO Syahrizan Mohd Zain said Oniya did not receive medical treatment quick enough.
“He suffered a heart attack but it could have been a different story had the ambulance driver was alert,” he told the New Straits Times.

“The driver was at the stands watching the game when Oniya suddenly collapsed and our defender was deprived of oxygen for several minutes.”
Syahrizan said the match was called off after 60 minutes, after they were informed by the hospital Oniya had died.

“He was pronounced dead at the hospital about 30 minutes later,” he told the Star newspaper.

Oniya had only just joined the Malaysian club this season after spells in Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan.
Oniywa was born in Lagos on June 5, 1985.

He left the shores of Nigeria for Azerbaijan in 2004, to play for Neftchi PFK, where he spent three seasons, until 2007, when he left for Uzbekhistan.
He played for Uzbekh club FK Samarqand-Dinamo, for three seasons, appearing in 50 games and scoring just once, until December 14, 2011, when he left for FC Bunyodkor.

Due to huge disagreements with the management of Bunyodkor, Oniya returned to FK Samarqand-Dinamo. Same year, he signed a contract with Bukoro, another Uzbekh club, for who he played 37 games and scored a goal, until 2013, when he left.

Oniya signed for Neftchi Fergana FK, in 2013, spending just a season, until he left for Malaysian side Persatuan Bola Sepak Daerah Kuala Terengganu T-Team better known as PBDKT T-Team, based in Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia.
He died playing for his Malaysian club.
