Transporters under the aegis of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) yesterday barricaded Ilorin/Ajase- Ipo highway in Kwara State to protest the alleged killing of their chairman by a police officer.
The officer who was part of a patrol team that mounted a road block at Ajase- Ipo allegedly fired a shot that killed the transporter identified as Akeem Laduba.
The victim was the Chairman of NURTW for Kabba/Omu Aran/Igbaja axis. According to the protesting transporters, the incident happened when the deceased was trying to intervene in a disagreement between the patrol team and a commercial motorcyclist.
The deceased and the police officers reportedly exchanged hot words which led to a free-for-all.
It was in the process that one of the policemen fired a shot which allegedly killed the man.
Consequently, the transporters stormed the highway yesterday protesting the killing of their leader and disrupting vehicular movement along the highway.
The highway is a busy route for travellers going to Abuja, Kogi, Ekiti, Osogbo in Osun State and other parts of the country.
The protesters forced motorists to put leaves in the front of their vehicles in solidarity with them.
When contacted, the spokesman of the state Police Command, Okasanmi Ajayi, confirmed the development but stressed that the police officer did not intentionally kill the transport union leader.
