Anxiety in church over lawmakers’ pay

The congregation listening to Archbishop Ignatius Kattey at Saint John’s Anglican Church in Port Harcourt on Saturday

THE congregation at the Saint John’s Anglican Church, Rumueme Deanery in Rivers State were shocked on Saturday when they were told how much a Nigerian serving senator earns as salary.

The church was the venue of the second session of the 7th Synod organised by the Diocese of the Niger Delta North (Anglican Communion).

Presiding over the event, the Archbishop, Province of Niger Delta and President of the synod, the Most Rev. Ignatius Kattey, told members of the church that a senator in Nigeria earned N29m every month as salary.

The entire church expressed shock, even as Kattey called on the President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, to review the earnings of the lawmakers.

“The incoming government should adopt practical cost-saving measures. A situation where lawmakers take so much as salaries is not healthy for the country’s economy.

“Go to the Internet, you will see that a senator earns N29m as salary every month. It is not hidden,” Kattey had told the bewildered congregation.
