The Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate in Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, has said he knows nothing about coffins allegedly dropped at some strategic locations in Aba.
The coffins bore inscriptions saying that anyone who does not vote for Ikpeazu on Saturday would die.
Ikpeazu described the matter as barbaric and retrogressive, accusing his political opponents of sponsoring the action with an intention to discredit him.
The PDP candidate, in a statement by his media aide, Mr. Enyinnaya Appolos, appealed to Aba residents to ignore the development and go about their lawful business without any fear of molestation.
An Aba resident told our correspondent on the telephone that unidentified persons had dropped caskets at strategic locations in the commercial town with inscription, “Vote for injustice and meet your death.”
The source said this had created panic in the metropolis dominated by non-indigenes.
The Independent National Electoral Commission had scheduled a rerun in 75 polling units in Aba-North and Aba-South local government areas, among others.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Abia State Command, Mr. Ezekiel Onyeke, confirmed the incident but said that the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Joshak Habila, had directed all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers to arrest anybody caught parading coffins for whatever reason.
He said that the police commissioner threatened to deal with any DPO who failed to arrest those parading coffins in their areas of operation, describing such developments as barbaric and unacceptable in a decent society.
